Will this deserted island hold the key to future growth?
As cities go, it is looking pretty useless, with only 1 hill and a forest for production. But, if it allows us to island hop to somewhere decent ...

I hate the random map generator some times. This is supposed to be a temperate medium sea level start, and we get an island that's 1/4 ice :( Maybe we'll have better luck on iron - no copper anywhere on our tiny island. Then again, we can do without copper since it only helps colossus (which we can't build) and uh... the internet?

Do we want to make a second city north or south of Berlin? I'd suggest some fogbusting after a second city to make sure we don't get barbs since we have no metal to defend ourselves with...

Hopefully the workboat will show us a way to the promised land

Oh yeah, I didn't revolt to slavery yet - could the next player revolt after finishing the worker?

Worker in 1 and Animal Husbandry in 1, I know what I'm going to do with the worker.

I pick Sailing as our next tech, to get a galley out for expansion plans, then Wheel to hook up the gold.

No horses BTW.

A work boat is produced for exploring then a warrior and then a settler, which has one turn left.

Met our nearest neighbour .

Essentially, we're in the north-eastern corner of the map. Our only route for expansion is through Tokogawa. Iron Working might be a good tech to research next. Although might need Agriculture to be able to work the gold for better research. What to do if no iron???

Really unsure of where to put the next city. Gold is more important than fish (and one of Toko's cities will grab one of the fish), so on the hill 2E of wheat?

Sweetacshon, you're up next!

Surely we've got to have iron!?!?!?! :dubious: A starting island with no horses or copper must have iron, right? I'd say Agr->IW for next techs. We're going to have to whip an army, so might as well get the food on-line first and get the cities growing.

Really unsure of where to put the next city. Gold is more important than fish (and one of Toko's cities will grab one of the fish), so on the hill 2E of wheat?
Probably so. And then another one up north for whipping troops.

OK, got it. Agri > IW > pray to the metal gods, city on the hill it is.

Do we want to start thinking of an alternative plan if there's no iron?

Honestly, we're so far north that I'd expect at least one iron source to pop up on our island. But having to do a naval war to get to 4 cities is going to be a pain... Maybe Toky has no metal either? :crazyeye:

I stopped one turn early, as the settler has reached position and we can discuss what to do with him. In position is ok, as we could work all the hills with the 2 food resources, but it's just not that great, which is apt because neither is the whole island. I can't believe our luck on the south end.

Basically, Hamburg was founded, and the gold and wheat (almost) was hooked up. Berlin was at happiness cap pre gold, so I went straight onto another settler to go north, and while it grows, it is building a lighthouse, which can be put on hold after pop for a worker at pop if we think we need another- but there's honestly not that much to do unless we're chopping. Probably a galley is in order, and the wb can come back for the northern cities crabs, checking out the islands north of Osaka as it goes.

The wheel and agriculture were completed, and IW is 9 turns away. Not much else to say at this stage, other than Stonehenge and Judaism being founded, and this:

Given what we know now I would settle in the current position since it is only one tile overlap with the capital, and we would get some use of the river and the woods to the south. But IW is only 9 turns away. Maybe we should wait to settle until we know where the iron is?

Edit: oops, it's normal speed. Probably not a good idea to wait so long then.

I vote settle in place, for two extra grass (1 shared with capital), and moving 1N replaces grass with turndra, with 2 ice either way. I also vote settling now, as I'm sure our luck will turn - surely iron is close to us!! :please: Perhaps I should've just settled in my TS :D

So I'm up now? I thought Sweetacshon was going to play his last turn, but I can take it now. Will play tomorrow in that case.

I haven't checked the save yet, but will probably settle now on the current tile and wait for iron to turn up. Next writing? We want libraries for a SE economy and we may need open borders with Tokugawa to be able to explore a bit more.

Yes, you're up next. Sounds like a good plan.

Is Toku going to give us open borders though? He's probably being the isolationist that he normally is...

I don't mind either city spot, but I would prefer the one north in case iron pops up somewhere further north (and save us a settler).

I have only played 10 turns so far, but we have a situation here and I want to have your input. There is no iron to be seen anywhere   ! Also, the borders of Tokyo are now blocking any progress to the west.

How to take on Japan without metals or horses? I see three options:
1. Massive combat warrior attack while he has only archers defending
2. Wait for catapults
3. Give up this game and generate a new map

I think catapults take too long time, given our bad starting position. If we go for the warrior attack we'd better make sure we get a city worth having (metal or horses). I'm planning to ferry a warrior to Japanese lands to check his resources.

Opinions?

No iron!

Given that his borders are blocking us off, I'm not sure how you are going to get that Warrior over to his island. Did he give us open borders?

I agree with you that cats will take too long. As for the warrior rush, I've attempted it in 2 different games. Both times it has failed.

I can't imagine how many Warriors we would need for such an operation. Each city will have at least 2 Archers by now. An Archer, with its 50% city defense, will have a strength of 4.5 versus our 2.4 Warrior (assuming a CRI promotion). We'd need at least 5 or 6 Warriors PER Archer which equates to about 10 or 12 Warriors just to take the first city. Plus, enough Galleys to ferry them all over at once. Honestly, I'm not sure that it is doable in a timeframe before Tokugawa gets Axemen.
