It's quite possible you will all thing i'm insane, but thats okay, because a lot of people already do ;)

Does anyone else do this? Sometimes I make up little stories for my units, like I imagine a full health elite battleship floating past a 1 health ship going in for repair and I think about the crew looking at it and going, "oh ****,he just came from the direction we're going huh?"

or if I have a big stack of tanks and like, 5 in a row die to one unit, pretending the 6th guy wants to run away but has to attack anyways..

and sometimes I give my units personalities, I swear, I have one Mech Inf. who is really friggen sarcastic!

maybe i'm TOTALLY off the wall, but im just kinda curious, does anyone else give their units personalities?

I do look at things from the unit's point of view occasionally. Wouldn't say I give them personalities though. I do feel bad when I declare war on someone as an aggressor.

I do that sometimes.. Especially with ships. One option I always wished for was the ability to name ships. Wouldn't it be cool to see H.M.S. Prince of Wails or U.S.S. Nimitz instead of just "battleship" or "carrier"?

yeah, its fun to imagine things from a untis perspective when you go into war or something and maybe post stories bout it in the stories forum so dont worry, your not the only insane person here ;)

might be fun, as long as you're ready for you savegames to get bigger than 10 MB each... ;)

as much fun as naming units would be, I think i'd feel pretty bad by the time I got to, like, "The Bob Tank Smasher 63"

cuz in late wars, wars of attirition are the only way to go ;)

It would be interesting to ponder the significance of the making up of stories for the little odds and ends one finds in a game such as this. Are some just more creative than others, or have a smaller attention span and must divert their minds more often? I don't often think about my units...I like to think role-playing wise on the larger scale.

I haven't made up the little stories, but I have wished for the ability to rename individual units. I've always wanted to have the 10th mountain division, the 82nd airborne, or the 5th King's regiment.

I've was fascinatted (SP?) on my trip to England with some of the museums dedicated to 250 years of the accomplishements of just one small ground unit. Wished I could watch a unit to watch its history in the Civ games.

I don't think naming units would be a problem, scavenger... it would be a totally optional thing. A unit or army would default with no name, but could be named by right-clicking it or something. This would totally rock. And I totally make up little stories for my units as I play the game. The desperate defenses in mountain fortresses, the carrier groups limping home, hoping to make it into dock before getting destroyed. I imagine my bloodthirsty generals in the war room grinning as I lob ICBM's across the globe.

Benjdm touched on a good issue... I feel a little remorse as well when I declare a war on a neighbor. There have been numerous games when I have to declare war just because I'm getting crowded on my continent.

Aslan... you waxed philosophical on some of your other posts. It's good to see some thought being put into the machinations of the CIV player's mind. I don't think it's a smaller attention span that causes some of us to create stories, it's that we get really drawn into the game itself. I'm sure you've felt a little surge when your Cossacks are galloping toward the enemy capitol, razing along the way.

As far as the filesize goes... I don't think one line of text for each unit could possibly raise the filesize more than 100k... even on a huge map with tons of units. Maybe if the code is inefficient and the names are repeated throughout the game, it could jump higher.

Never. The units in this game have no personality, they are just numbers. Random numbers when it comes to combat.

I really think you need to get out more, It is Christmas after all. Don't get attactched to you units you shouldnt be getting upset when one of units dies a horrible death

hehe, I don't get upset like I need to go cry, I get a little bit remorseful like, "oh, shoot, I liked that tank! Billy bob is dead now" a feeling witch may last all of 10 seconds before I go blow up lewi's tank ;)

I dunno what it says about the mind of a civ player...that'd be kinda interesting if we have any physcologist people hanging around the boards who could give us some input on that issue :)

I never intended for this thread to get quite so deep lol
