Fun With No Settlers

I can't get this to work, the AI just cuddles up in theese one-two city enclaves while I walk the earth unchallenged as soon as tier 2 units become availible :/

The unit every 100 turns wouldn't be hard at all, I think.

I may look into that when I have the time.

On what difficulty level? In my games the AI was pretty bad at warlord but got better at anything above.

I have tried a new thing now, namely putting settlers on bronze working, removing the building requirement and increasing the costs of settlers. I started with settlers that costs ten times as much as in the usual game, that was too easy at a lower difficulty and suprisingly too hard at a higher (because the AI can build so fast). I will try different cost settings but I believe that five times the price of vanilla could be good.

With ten times the price a well developed mid to late game city can produce a settler every 20 turns or so, so with 5 times the price and a settler every ten turns in the midgame it should be fine.

Also, did you turn on barbarian world? As far as I can tell the AI is pretty good at capturing those barb cities once they get their horsies.

edit: Also it can take up to 400 turns for the AI to have around 4 cities, the game is much slower, don't judge the AIs performance before some serious time has passed (and that's on normal speed).

I'm playing on immortal, raging barbs, aggressive AI and so on, but also on quick, maybe that weighs in. The problem is that they expand much slower than me, which leaves little challenge.

The event-settler-thing sounds extremely interesting. I played with Rihatz modmod that added a cumulative cost to founding citites (outdated alas), which got the game closer to my preferences but was a bit unstable. I've also seen ideas of having settlers as GP, but he main problem there was how to get the AI to prioritize them I think. But this event-thingy seems like a very good idea!

EDIT: Been playing some on normal speed instead, seems to work much better. Though I'm not really sure wether cramming the map with AIs or leaving more space for the barbs is best for the AIs survivability. Often one-city-state-AIs fight long stalemate wars between eachother, not doing much but hampering their growth.
