Funday Monday Game #1: I play, You play, We all play a Lets play!

The New King

After The Majah's mysterious departure to the nation called "Brandenburg", the adviser Heerlo prepared to start his reign in Austria. Heerlo was little known in Austria, and had not been one of The Majah's advisers for very long. Yet for some reason the people of Austria trusted his instincts. Whether or not his instincts were right or not would remain to be seen.

Building The Oracle

Shortly before his departure, The Majah had laid plans for a beautiful structure to be built in Vienna. Heerlo apparently liked this idea, and one of the earliest acts in his reign was to begin production of the structure. During the construction of the building that came to be known as the Oracle, Heerlo helped to develop an aristocracy in Vienna that wished to see the structure finished, and they helped fund it's production. After years of construction, the Oracle was finally finished in Vienna, and became a wonder of the world.

Spoiler :

The Wauaji War

Early in his reign, Heerlo faced the problem of The Wauaji, the barbaric invaders who came from the south. The Austrian army fended off several Wauaji invasions over the years of Heerlo's reign, and sometimes the Wauaji inflicted heavy casualties on the Austrians. Finally, the people of Manilla informed Heerlo as to where the Wauaji camp was, and that, they, too, wished to see the Wauaji defeated. After waiting for the Austrian army to recuperate, Heerlo personally took command and went on the offensive against the Wauaji.

After engaging the Wauaji in one indecisive battle, the main Wauaji force broke off and fled to the east, leaving their encampment almost entirely undefended. Taking advantage of the situation, Heerlo divided his army, sending one regiment of Austrian warriors to raze the encampment. The main Austrian force pursued the Wauaji. After an easy battle, the Wauaji encampment was razed, and the main Austrian force finished off the remaining Wauaji army.
Spoiler :

End of Heerlo's Reign

Heerlo reigned for many more years after the Wauaji War, continuing to develop and guide Austria. At the end of his reign, Heerlo supposedly called the people of Vienna together to address a speech, in which he said that he had to go guide a nation called "The United States" into the future. This led to an Austrian legend that said Heerlo became the leader of the United States to the north. Before leaving, though, Heerlo proclaimed that his most trusted adviser, named Js 9001, would be the new king, and that all Austrian people should follow him and trust his leadership as they had trusted Heerlo's.

Out of Character Notes

Not a whole lot happened here. I finished up the Oracle, and got us started on Petra. I built another worker and sent the first one up to our second city. I think I kept our friendships up with everyone we had DOFs with, and I made a DOF with Assyria. Clearing that encampment also got us up to being friends with Manilla.I also started us on Piety. Anyway, hope I didn't mess things up too bad.

Great part of the story! I think we're looking pretty good here in regards the game; might want to start in on Patronage soon but finishing Tradition (Oligarchy's all we need, right?) and taking the bonus faith policy in Piety will also be useful.
Also, good you were able to wipe out that barb encampment! I'd done some damage to it but wasn't able to wipe it out before suffering a bit of an invasion.

I finished tradition already iirc, and as I said, I started piety.

Nice job! Judging from this, I don't think there's anything you did to mess this game up. I might not have taken piety, but since we're primarily getting our faith from shrines and temples, it might pay off in the end. I hope we get Petra, I'm not sure we got up to currency fast enough, but getting philosophy early is also pretty important, so it's tough to know what the right move is here.

I notice your save file says turn 71. Is that just a naming oddity, or did you accidentally upload the wrong save?

I thought we might want to get a religion if possible, but it's probably going to be pretty hard now, since I think only one or two more can be founded.

I notice your save file says turn 71. Is that just a naming oddity, or did you accidentally upload the wrong save?

I'm pretty sure I got the right one. I think that's just what it was named when I downloaded it. But, JS_9001, if it's not on turn 107 when you get it, just let me know and I'll try to get the right one.

I'll start my segment tomorrow. One thing I noticed though, since most of the desert around Vienna is flood plains doesn't that mean Petra won't help too much?

There are still four desert hills and a bunch of desert incense around the city. There's also a lot of useless desert tiles if we don't get Petra, which would be unfortunate. The extra trade route is pretty nice too.

Well, I just started us on Petra. The ball's in your court, JS!

If you're on a Windows, you want to put the save into Libraries -> Documents -> My Games -> Sid Meier's Civilization V -> Saves -> Single. Then, when you boot up Civ V, you should be able to load it from the Singleplayer -> Load Game menu. I'm afraid I can't help you if you're on a Mac.

The Wonders of Vienna

Js_9001, the new King of Austria, continued the construction of the Petra in Vienna. His predecessor Heerlo had almost completed the Wonder, and with the city focused on working hard to build it, it was completed. Next, the King set his sights on another unfinished project, the Hanging Gardens. It had been started by a previous monarch, but abandoned. The construction went along well, but 2 turns (whatever those are) before completion, another civilization built it. Imitation would be unacceptable, so the project was abandoned. Dejected by this close loss, the King decided to build something that could be imitated, and soon the National College of Austria was completed.

Religion

During the middle of Js_9001's reign, the Austrian people had grown very pious. They had worshipped shrines and their Goddess of Festivals, and had accumulated 200 Faith Points (whatever those are). Word had spread of a Great Prophet who would come to bring a religion to Austria. The Great Prophet came, but it was not to be, for he was killed in an accident just as he was going to found a religion. Meanwhile, Catholicism, the 6th and final religion of the world, was founded far away.

Diplomacy

A warrior was sent to a barbarian encampment north of Kuala Lumpur found a badly injured tribe of barbarians. Only one warrior remained, and was holding a group of American workers hostage. The Austrian warriors attacked, cleared the encampment, making Austria friends with Kuala Lumpur and Vatican City, and returned the worker. They later defeated another group of barbarians nearby. Later on, a caravan was sent to Kuala Lumpur, making them allies (helped by the king adopting Patronage as a social policy). In the next and final step of the king's cunning plan, Prince Frederich of Austria was married to Princess Josefina of Kuala Lumpur, securing the city, and its large and advanced army, as part of Austria's holdings. Soon after this, a caravan was sent to Vatican City, making them Austria's new allies. Could they be the next target for diplomatic marriage?

Meanwhile, global politics were very peaceful. There were many friendships and no wars on the known world. Austria maintained friendships with Assyria and Russia and created ones with America and Carthage, and also sold incense, iron, horses, and whales to various nations.

The End of Js_9001's Reign

The people of Austria had grown unhappy with the king, and eventually he was forced to resign. His most trusted advisor, Silverman6083, was appointed as the new king. The people of Austria hope that they will lead the country well.

Notes

We got a couple of bad breaks, (Missed Hanging Gardens by 2 turns, religion by 1) but I think we're in a pretty good spot. It's up to the upcoming people to decide what victory we want to pursue. There is unhappiness (-2) but circuses will fix that soon. Be careful if looking to annex another city-state, as I found out it's a pretty big (-12 in this case) happiness hit. Also, Education is close to done, so getting Unis and Oxford up should be a big priority. As for policies I'd recommend 1 in Patronage then Rationalism, but this could be different based on what victory we decide to go for.

Nice update! I might get an update in today as a Christmas Present :xmascheers:

Nice! I feel like our national college was a bit late, but that's ok, since we got the Oracle and Petra before it. Merry Christmas everyone, or if you don't celebrate Christmas, happy holidays and a day off work or winter break! :)

Yeah, I started on the Hanging Gardens, but I stopped in order to build Petra. And it seems like the kings of Austria have started a tradition of naming their most trusted adviser as the successor. :D

Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone!

Pity about the Hanging Gardens, but this is Emperor so it's a pretty hard wonder to nab. Getting Petra however is a major boost that should help us significantly in the long. Diplo Marrying Kuala Lumpur should pay off in the long run as well; I'd advise we Diplo Marry Vatican City and keep Manila independent to help keep Vienna growing. I'm thinking we might want to consider a Diplomatic Victory here.
And yeah, Merry Christmas (or whatever vaguely-winter solstice-related holiday it is you celebrate) to everyone! :xmascheers:

Here ya go folks! Also Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!

Tentatively, King Silverman Hapsburg walked into the palace and gazed at the throne. He sighed. He was no Prophet that his people needed, no wonder builder like the last few kings...
But then again, he didn't intend to be.

The Carthaginian Loan
The first thing the new King did was take off to Carthage, traveling on caravan. When he arrived there, he negotiated the famous Carthaginian Loan. In return for 528 upfront gold, Austria would send annual shipments of gold, horses, and iron.
With this money he immediately came home and married off his son, Moriarte to the Leader of the Vatican's daughter, Rachel Cease, after he was finished hunting down the famous criminal Sherlock Holmes, of course.
But the new city was not widely accepted, some even refused to recognize it. It brought great unhappiness, up to about 8 according to polls. But the King simply did not care, he had to shape up this pathetic kingdom somehow...

The Assyrian Bribe
The Vatican brought Gold with them. This, along with the recently expanded incense industry, had potential, the King knew. He traveled to Assur personally to meet the King of Assyria. They came to an agreement that Assyria would mobilize and attack Carthage, for regular shipments of incense, and gold.
"Oh these petty kings are too easy." Thought the King to himself.

The Age of Entertainment
To quell the vast unhappiness in the kingdom, he ordered the building of coliseums in all cities but the Vatican, whose local bureaucrats were still making resistance, and one grand coliseum named Circus Maximus, this brought great happiness. Here citizens of Austria could watch barbarians and criminals, such as Sherlock Holmes, get eaten alive by whales or tigers or lions. Good times.

Exploration
His majesty the king ordered for a trireme to be sent out to explore the unknown. That trireme navigated most of the coast and is coming into Russian ports, that was relayed by messenger birds. In the process, 2 new city city-states were discovered, Kiev and Vilnius, which could be married into, to serve as an "over-seas" base (though they aren't overseas)

The Arts and Science Haven: Vienna
By collectivization of agriculture and shipping those foods to Vienna, Vienna has quickly become a sprawling, disgusting, vulgar, developed metropolis. It is here where a university is that is discovering new things every day, from here a Great Scientist was born, and whose Academy lies on the perimeters of the city. It is also in Vienna that a Writer's Guild is, where 2 Great Writers were discovered. This explosion of culture and science has led great happiness, and envy. In fact 2 research agreements have been invested with Assyria and Carthage, and Russia is a prime candidate for another.
Countless new technologies have been discovered, the more notable among them being: Steel, Machinery, Workshops, Bridges, and very close to discovering a form of powder that is ignitable to explode. And that just sounds fun, said the King.

Roman Aggression
Rome had been taunting Austria for years, though this was ignored, their anger reached a pinnacle when an Austrian Spy stole a technology from them. Their leader denounced the Austrian Empire. But this would not be good for them. The King returned the favor, and in following, Russia, then Carthage, then Assyria, and finally America all denounced Rome. Though there have been small preemptive strikes, war was bound to happen soon. All that was needed was a tiny flare for World War to strike...

Inter-City Commerce and The North and South Crisis
By the early 1000s, the road Network was completed, and with ideas of Commerce and the discovery of Wagon Trains, GDP was at an all-time high in the high 60s, and peak of 70s! The majority of the vast wealth was used to upgrade and expand the military. But not all was well, for this commerce led to an issue within the borders of Vienna. The South of Vienna was used primarily for Trading, and Industry such as Horses and Lumber Mills. The North of Vienna was flood plains and desert used primarily as farms and plantations. This was all well and good, until the abundance of gold came in. Now with all the gold coming into circulation, inflation was a mighty high risk. Now to protect industry, the South wished for foreign gold to be valued cheaper so that their gold would stay safe. But the North objected, they barely had any gold as it was and they wouldn't have this new gold they were using to be less, nor did they want high tariffs.
In a panic, with protesters and an angry mob at his door, King Silverman Hapsburg the First of Vienna fled, and left a note that said he was going to go where quote: "Austria rules the world with Nukes & XCOMs" weird, oh also to put in son Moriarte as first choice, and his son Silverman ll second, and his daughter who he strangely never bothered to name as last.
Only time could tell what would happen...

I hope you all enjoyed!

EDIT: Everyone else had OOC Notes so here goes mine:
2 Research Agreements with Assyria & Carthage
Carthage has like almost 2000 gold no joke
We're making tons of cash
We're really happy
I think we should stockpile faith so we can buy us some Engis
We have an academy
I want N Vienna for food & S Vienna for Gold/Hammers.
Everybody hates Rome, now is the time to strike *hint hint*

:) that was awesome. I'm kind of curious to see a screenshot of what's happening now. It's up to you now, Moriarte. I may be a few days before I get the chance to do my next update though, so don't worry about playing the next turns too quickly.

Here it is:

Spoiler :

I'll get to my part in a day or two, when i'm ready. ;)

Moriarte, the successor of his majesty King Silverman the tranquil was no ordinary child. When most children found pleasure in playing games and spending their day in learning rituals of the court, young Moriarte kept mostly to himself. He sat quietly under the Oak, away from the noise, and read countless books on military strategy and tactics. The fact grasped King Silverman's attention and when the time came he proclaimed Moriarte as his successor. He secretly believed that military intervention will strengthen the blood line of Hapsburgs and will bring the Austrian people treasures and wisdom, to which they are entitled.

Chapter I: The Gold of Carthage

After his father passed the throne to him, Moriarte sold everything the court was in possession of, including unique luxuries, horses and iron, amassing huge amount of gold.

The network of agents, established by his forefathers, was quite handy, as it revealed that Assur, the capital city of friendly Assyria was in posession of wonders of the world, some of which would be a great sight for the peope of Austria. He was astonished by stories of the Great Wall, Globe Theatre, and, especially, the magnificent Notre Dame. The Declaration of Friendship was not renewed.

Furthermore, he made a deal with King Ashurbanipal, so the said king will declare war on Russia and America, friends of Assyrian empire at the time. Ashurbanipal lust for gold and whale teeth was so overwhelming, the monarch could not resist the temptation.

Finally, Moriarte took a loan of 500 gold pieces from queen Dido, who fancied him, and with the help of russian researchers he upgraded five of his galleases into mighty frigates.

In the mean time, global politics was developing in a manner, which was pleasant to king Moriarte. One misty morning, Augustus Caesar with escort showed up in the Palace of Vienna. Irritated and hostile, after a usual portion of insults, he sat down and asked if there is anything he can do to make Moriarte's life miserable. Moriarte, the diplomat, told Augustus, that George Washington was visiting recently and great king was having a kind laughter when describing to Moriarte pathetic Roman army. To which Augustus replied that this is nonsense, as he only lacks some strategic resources to initiate the campaign. Campaign he was planning a long time. King Moriarte kindly agreed to supply Augustus with a shipment of horses and iron. Roman delegation left shortly. Thus, the secret pact was established, whereby Roman empire declared war on American empire.

While receiving Great Empress Catherine on another occasion, king was so impressed by her beauty and warm voice, he almost gave up half of his treasury, when she asked for it. Luckily for the people of Austria, young Moriarte's advisors talked him out of the "deal", to which Catherine responded "perhaps another time, darling.."

Spoiler :

Chapter II: The Armada

As forefathers foretold "nothing lasts forever", so the charms of Russian empress waned with time and King Moriarte gathered his military advisors for a final briefing. The plan was simple: to impress Catherine the Great by taking Assyrian capital city with one swift stroke. So began the siege of Assur. Overnight the defences of Assur were torn apart by concentrated cannon fire from frigates, while land forces disembarked and surrounded the capital.

Spoiler :

Plan was a success, the only downside to it was that the bay of Assur wasn't connected to the outside world. But he calmed himself that Frigates can still be useful. As he was plotting do bring war to Americans and Romans, the fleet may serve Austria, once more. Moriarte constructed armory and set a plan to produce few siege engines, knights to aid the land army of Assur, which looked too slim to continue campaign and puppet (and raze) some more Assyrian cities. Travellers told stories of another magnificent world wonder, constructed in neighboring Carthage: The Forbidden Palace. Getting that wonder for Austria is my dream.. said Moriarte to himself - "too bad my time here is almost over".

Spoiler :

Chapter III: The Path of Science.

While Moriarte generally approved the ways of his predecessors, he had a dream of his own. He wanted Austria to become a scientific and economic powerhouse. So, during his reign, universities, caravans and cargo ships were mainly constructed. As a result, contemporary historians claim that Austria was in top 3 scientific nations of the world at the time his reign has ended. A number of works of writing & art were acquired, through war and peace, making Austria top tourist destination of the known world. Rationalism was adopted to enhance the rate of scientific discoveries, which, according to some, may lead to contruction of Public schools, shortly. If every citizen of Austria will become educated, great things will follow, Moriarte believed.

A caravel was constructed in Kuala Lumpur, which shortly met Sweden, Iroquis, Portugese and Arabian nations, numerous city states and even one natural wonder was discovered. A heavily promoted scout was trained in the capital (code name "watcher"), who set sail to a neghbouring continent, just because king wanted to see "what's where".

Before his departure from the Palace, king Moriarte ordered his successor, prince Redwings, to strengthen the court of Hapsburg even further: with gold and with steel.
