Also fans of sports know a scary amount of "stats" about their teams and players. These stats make their way into sports computer games, where the sum of your stats translates to the effectiveness of your player. You have to pick players with certain stats for certain positions, but you can't go too heavily on one stat (e.g. speed, stamina, strength, accuracy, etc) because the game is actually quite well balanced in that regard. Like most computer simulations, this is a good reflection of real life: a footballer (soccer) player who is fast but has no strength may be really good down the wing but he can't play through the middle and is next to useless in set piece situations. You not only need to balance stats for a single player, you also need to have a balance of players with certain stats within the group. You can't make a football team full of strikers but no defenders any more than you can make a raid group full of DPS but no tanks. There is really very little difference between sport and RPGs.

Also also, football tactics are basically the same as "strats" in boss fights. When I play football games against a team with a certain set of players (e.g. a really physical team or a team that likes to pass it around a lot), I ask myself, "what's the strat?" In WoW, the raid leader tells everyone the strat. In football, the manager does. Hell, you even exploit Line of Sight when you position yourself in front of the goal keeper to allow a team mate to take a shot without the goalkeeper being able to see the ball until the last second. The Offside Trap is just "zoning a mob". Making a clever run off the ball to draw a defender away from a striker == pulling mobs away from the healer/dps. Man marking == tanking. I honestly don't get why there is so little overlap between sports fans and WoW players.
