Future Religions

Zoroastranism and Sikhism are good choices to add. I was trying to think of new religions, but I'm not sure which ones are fitting enough. I thought about Mormonism or Unitarianism, but both of them might be considered branches of Christianity. I did think about Scientology (at least its a religion that's very modern), but it still considered to be a cult by many (same with Falun Gong) or even a pyramid scheme. I'm not going to argue whether or not it is. I think the fact that many consider it to be one would make me hesitent to include, though.

But it would still be interesting having them. The chances of Scientology spreading around the world before the game ends is rare, but, then again, those who believe in it right now are pretty small.

EDIT: But if you are going to forget about controversy, have a little fun with it. Make the Missionary unit for Scientology look like Tom Cruise. :D

Greco-Roman religion?

I like the idea of adding new religions. And is not necessary to include all of them in a single game, we may put "flavored" groups of beliefs.
My proposals are those ones for the ancient times:
- Zoroastrianism (Mazdeism)
- Helenism? (I must find a better name)
- Druidism? (Celtic beliefs)
- Shintoism

And the medieval
- Sikhism
- Ásatru (Viking beliefs)
- American Polytheism

The game should elect randomly 7 religions per game. This would be great.

Having extra religions in the game would be viable IF religions could be lost as well as found. This could happen if a holy city and/or shrine for a religion is destroyed OR if the civ which founded the Faith was destroyed. Then, any later religions could be founded to fill the gap of the one which was lost. So the 7 religion 'cap' would still be in place, but new religions could arise to fill the gap of any faiths lost along the way. That might give you an incentive to DESTROY a religion ;). Say you have missed out on all the early faiths, but are first to discover the tech needed to found Confuscianism. Now, it will be announced that you have founded the religion, but as long as 7 faiths still remain on the board, you can't do anything about this faith-you cannot build a shrine, or missionaries or temples/monastaries. It does have a VERY low chance of spreading, though, and you do get a small culture boost in your 'holy' city. However, if one of the OLD religions gets knocked off in some fashion, then your religion gains proper status and fills the old gap (unless someone had 'founded' a religion before you did, in which case you simply have to wait your turn ;) )

I have never understood why they do religion the way they do. It should not be a tech thing. I feel that that does not addequetly represent the randomness of the rise of religions. If Great Prophets founded religions instead of tech leads it would make more sense. Im sure there would be a game mechnic problem but it would feel more realisitic.

With that many religions, we will need some kind of inquisition system so that one may not end the game with 10 or so holy cities.

Try the 'True Prophets' Mod TheHistoryMan. Religions work pretty much exactly the way you mention. Sounds like it would be right up your alley :).

I'd like an "Atheism" choice, although it's not a religion, it could represent a government's dislike of religion (like in the USSR or China)

It could give maybe a bonus to science and maybe commerce, and perhaps a penalty in war weariness or happiness?

Civilizisism!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is that?????????:p

I think this is what we all are doing since Civilization 1. Worshiping this game at least 5 hours a day.

The Great prophet would be "Sid Meirs".:p

How about this

Each civilization starts with is own pagan religion which spreads to other cities in your empire when you found new cities however if one of the "researched" religions is introduced to a city then the pagan religion ceases to be practiced and the city adapts the new religion

You could also split Christanity into 3 seperate religions Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant and Islam into Sunni and Shiite

If we step outside the box abit we could introduce political idealogies as late "Religions" such as Fascism, Communism and "Western values" (Democracy, Civil rights etc)

Ideas about religion:

Atheism civic: no happiness from religious buildings, costs +1 more gold to maintain religious buildings. +20% production and +20% science in all cities.

Pagan temples: not being able to building temples when you don't have a religion is annoying, so this is the solution: pagan temples can be build in cities which do not have a religion. It produces 1 happy face but no culture. Once a religion spreads to this city the building converts to the temple of the first religion which spread in that city.

New religions: only 2-3 more religion is enough. May I suggest Zoroastrianism (tech: Monarchy), Sikhism (tech: education?) and Bahai (tech: Liberalism)

PS: I also like Dargoth's ideas on pagan religion

i agree there should defenitely be an atheism option and islam, christianity should be split into there different sects.

Atheism- and +1 happiness per city, free scientist specialist in each city?
