G-III Lambda

I will definitely have an attempt at this one. My best launch date is 1725ad  , which leaves me a little room for improvement ;)

Wehey! It has taken me 4 years to get my first double post, maybe its a sign!

you know... the thing that frustrates me is getting writing by about 2800, then having to hold off on philosophy until I pop CoL, and have that not pop until 1500 and knowing that if I had just got CoL/Philo, I would be doing so much better!! Very frustrating...

I've not been having any trouble with the huts, usually getting COL just in time for philosophy coming in. My main trouble has been middle age free tech gifting etc, either there is a starting tech missing or I get chivalry as my free tech.

I've just played out my best ancient age yet reaching middle ages in 2270bc, unfortunately none of the AI got engineering and my free tech was chivalry, no SGL either so I'm not sure whether to continue with this one or not.

Hi, this is my first post.:)

I just played out two games with similar starts using Russia and following SirPleb's strategy. The first game I completed in 1110AD
even though I popped no settlers from huts, didn't get feudalism in MA and got nationalism in IA. I also mistimed Internet and Thoery of Evolution prebuilds. I just wanted to finish to see what time I could get; my only luckwas getting six SGL's, two in AA.

The next game went better. I popped all AA techs while researching philosophy and got a settler by turn ten from a hut. Reached MA in 2110BC. Then my luck ran out and I got chivalry as free tech in MA, sanitation in IA, and recycling in modern age. Again I mistimed my prebuilds and launched in 990AD.

So times good enough to make the HOF without perfect starts or execution are possible. I know I'm not quite good enough to beat Dave McW's 570AD launch without a tremendous amount of luck. I would post these games, but both times when I clicked the launch button the game crashed with a tempdoc error. I got the first game to launch without errors only by going back two turns and changing my moves. My game has never crashed on this computer before. Does anyone know why this happens or what I can do to fix it so that I can post the 990AD game?

Welcome to CFC and the HOF! I'm not sure I follow your info on the problem. When you launched the game initially it crashed? Or when you tried to get some screenshots later? Is it Conquests 1.22?

Welcome PrinceMyshkin! :)
I found that when I installed C3C onto my new laptop the space movie caused a CTD (it had been fine on my old comp); the only workaround I know of is to delete the movie file (I read about that in the bugs forum so you can find the details there if need be).

have you met all the AI, Aigburth? I would continue playing, btw. All the top players are trying to beat the best score ever, so there is a good chance you'll have the best time for the gauntlet, at least for awhile ;)

besides - if you keep playing, you can refine your technique in the IA and MT, which is a little tricky - you dont' want to get a great start and find that you aren't sure how far to expand so you get 4 turn research for the rest of the game!!

Wow, that is bad luck, 3 strikes in a row. 990 is still a good date.

killercane, the game ctd when I hit the launch button on the spaceship screen.
Thanks for the information, Bartleby. I looked at the bug thread and it turns out I have a problem with my on-board sound card on my computer. I put NoSound=1 in the .ini file, and the spaceship lauched just fine in both games save. I'll probably post the 990AD launch in the HOF, even though many here have starts that can beat it.
Marsden, even with good luck I still probably couldn't have launched before 800AD. My micromanagement skills aren't that great yet. I had happiness and growth problems slowing my research times down and at times had to research slower than 4 turns because I couldn't come up with enough gold to cover my negative-gpt. Still, this challenge is good at learning to do better.

one thing on chieftain is that there is no penalty for running a deficit, so in chieftain (and only chieftain!) games, it's allowed.

I thought that you could run a deficit as long as you have money in your treasury to cover the losses.

...as long as you are not giving gpt to the AI (and you have not got enough cash to cover it of course). Double negative gpt is a banned technique IIRC.

I'm looking forward to the weekend as I'll be able to give this another go.

On most levels, if you run a deficit so that you dont' haev enough gold to cover your losses, the system will disband a unit or remove a building.

On chieftain, it does not. So, on chieftain, you can run 100% science the entire game if you want, have a 0 balance and a -100 gpt, and that;s ok. That's one of the ways that people get 4 turn research in the IA, btw.

What you can't do is also be giving the AI GPT at the same time, though.

Wow! I did not know that, maybe I can get faster times after all. I'll definitely remember this for other chieftan games. Thanks.:)

I'm devastated! [pissed]

I entered Modern Times one turn ahead of Dave's game. Prebuild for The Internet to be completed in a town that gets it's build after the town that is just about to complete the ToE so I'll get the Internet as I enter the new age. Prebuild almost done in Moscow for SETI as well just for good measure. Four turn research is assured.

I gift the AI into Modern times and end up with no one having Rockets. Then to add insult to injury, my free tech is Recycling. :aargh: :wallbash:

So, I'm now seven turns behind him. I guess I've played so far that I may as well finish it.

ARRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Congratulations on the 640AD finish, Tone. I think the time can be beaten, too. Probably not by me. My 990AD finish might not even be on the table when this is done. I had similar misfortune on a warlord diplo-game when nobody had fission and my modern age research was going to take 6 turns.

I still haven't had a chance to try a game yet. I will be very happy with a sub 1000ad launch. But, I still tip my hat to the guys that are getting some truely early dates. :hatsoff:

This looks like it will be a well participated gauntlet. :goodjob:
