While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
• Victory Condition: Conquest (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
• Difficulty: Emperor
• Starting Era: Ancient
• Map Size: Large
• Speed: Epic
• Map Type: Oasis
• Required: No Tribal Villages
• Must Not Be Checked: No Barbarians
• Civ: Persia
• Opponents: Must include America (Franklin Roosevelt), Byzantium (Justinian), Egypt (Ramesses II), Ethiopia (Zara Yaqob), Greece (Alexander), India (Gandhi), Russia (Peter), Russia (Stalin), Sumeria (Gilgamesh), Viking (Ragnar Lodbrok)
• Version: 3.19.003

Must not play as Inca.
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

So what's the hitch on this one? Is it somehow more than a straight Immortal rush?

The southern start (which the player always gets) on the Oasis map is pretty difficult. Almost all of the resources are concentrated in one hemisphere, can't remember which.

I believe that all the Horse resources are near the northern coast on an Oasis map. Since one wants Immortals early, some players will settle on or near the northern coast. Since the player always starts on the southern part of the map, the initial settler must rush up to the northern coast between two AIs, beeline Animal Husbandry and The Wheel, claim a Horse resource, spam Immortals and kill the two nearest AI Civs ASAP.

And you start with a scout... will help against animals but not barb warriors/archers. Maybe swap team numbers (without adding teams) if it is allowed and works... odd numbers start at the bottom, even at the top.

This sounds like a fun game. Having to cross the desert and to find a nice settling spot near the coast with hopefully horses closeby as outlined by Sun Tzu Wu.
This also means that Mapfinder/rerolling won't be required, a thing that kept me from playing HoF games so far.
So I just signed up, installed BUFFY and started playing.

One question though, regarding the victory condition: What happens if I get a domination victory? Does that mean the game is lost or can I just go on and conquer everybody?

If you trip the domination limit or win by any means other than the victory condition of the Gauntlet then the game would not qualify for the Gauntlet but would still be eligible for the rest of the hall of fame.

Also - don't forget that all victory conditions must be enabled at the start of the game.

The BUFFY mod will force the player to use team #1, which always starts in the south on the oasis map.

There is a brief number of turns, through turn 5 at deity level (later for lower difficulties), before the first barbarian animal can spawn. There is a longer number of turns before the first barbarian military unit (warrior or archer) can spawn; from memory it is the late teens on Diety and later for lower difficulties.

For this particular challenge, one should easily find a northern settling location by turn 10 (without require complete kills option, a city must be settled by the end of turn 10 or one will suffer a conquest loss if only one AI settles a city -- not likely since there are 10 AIs). The initial settler will be at risk only to animals on the last few turns before settling (turn 10 or before). The scout can be used to make sure that the settler has an animal free path to its settling location. Also remember that the scout has +100% versus animals plus all player military units have an addtional slight (at deity level) bonus over barbarian units that increases as difficulty level decreases. So the scout can move to defensive terrain adjacent to an animal when it is too close to the settling spot. Don't forget that a settler can safely settle on flat terrain next to an animal when it still has movement points left to settle; the animal should be teleported must move outside of cultural borders; animals can never enter player or AI culture.

See US SGOTM 19 thread. Our 2nd city we settled next to a bear. He was not teleported out but could not take the undefended city.

Sorry, I was wrong about the teleportation. Animals can't enter borders, but in this case the bear simply finds himself in borders and must walk to s neutral plot. Animals can never enter borders, thus they can never capture a city.
