While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
  • Expansion: Brave New World
  • Victory Condition: Time (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
  • Difficulty: Chieftain
  • Map Size: Standard
  • Map Type: Frontier
  • Speed: Quick
  • Leader: Netherlands (William)
  • Opponents: Any
  • Version: SV8
  • Date: 1st to 16th October 2014
The highest score wins.

Rut-roh, standard-size Time Gauntlet! Haha, that's a whole mess o' cities. I hope I have time to try this one, should be fun with William.

Challenge here is to not win culturally before time runs out, hehe.

croc: I don't think there is a city limit.

33 is about the most you can fit on a small lakes map, if I recall. On standard it would be a lot more, except for ocean tiles (which you don't have to deal with on lakes)

I actually have no idea, but I expect the max will be over 100.

Not difficult, if you don't build tourism improvements. Avoid Eiffel Tower as long you can.

Put some cultural civs.

Happiness is not a real issue in the beginning. T205, I have something like 26 cities and 97 smiles. :crazyeye:
Score is low : 3 800. I have to wait end of caravans food to send them to another city.

Iron Curtain and Resettlement are very nice.

Issue is micromanagement, specially workers. As your empire growth, there's no many thing to do in a turn. And I have 125 turns to play.

Yeah, I started a game too. T200 with ~90 cities or so and a ridiculous amount of workers. I refuse to automate - turns are long! It reminds me of empire building in civ2.

Tourism has been an issue throughout but I am delaying Eiffel like you said. Just capturing AI cities has been giving me great works and boosting my tourism to dangerous levels though. I had to take my spy out of cap to let AI steal so they could build culture stuff faster.

I'm interested to see what happiness is like endgame. I had to make a tough choice between Resettlement and happiness from science buildings for 4th T2 order belief. I'm actually not finding resettlement as useful as I thought it would be, maybe because I got off to a faster start than you.

Start is also haunting me. Forgot to build NC after my GL slingshot (found out on T100) then I missed Hanging Gardens by 2 turns, but it's way too late to turn back now.

I try resettlement, so I start late. Also because I wish to bulb my scientist at the end to have a lot of future tech. Sadly I need to build world fair soon to fix happiness issue (protectionnism). So I won't be able to have a bunch of policies.
I tried to manage expansion and happiness. But 97, I'm a little bit high. :/

Exciting. In all the years I've played this game, I never went for a Time victory. This should be an interesting round...

Gosh durn it, I got all distracted by a great Petra start and forgot my own recipe for success with Time Victories. 100 turns in with an amazing Petra start and I have to start over because I took the wrong pantheon. :wallbash:

11 turns : 3 hours of play. :crazyeye:
114 turns left.
And I can't fall under 90 happiness even with 3 or 4 new cities found each turn.

Memoryjar: Yeah, it's quite slow. I thought my first attempt might be practice so I was playing fast/careless early, but I doubt I'll be able to handle another game like this :p

Question: do cities states ever permanently declare war on you if you attack too many of them? I want to start taking some over but I don't want to lose all of my allies. Not sure if that happens or not. I guess I could test it out...

Wow, my computer does not like this gauntlet. Just had my first crash in a long time.

I think CS Perma-war was taken out in BNW. But it does permanently affect faction loss rate of nearby CS.

Do you guys know what a good score for this type of gauntlet is? I really have no idea what to aim for.

Trying a Freedom specialist empire. Also filled Piety and took Jesuit Education along with Pagodas and Mosques... Probably a misplay, even with 350fpt there's just too much to faith-buy. :crazyeye: Temple happiness would've been a nice choice.

A previous gauntlet on small map ended with score higher than 11 000. I was at 7 000 T225, before I accidently won a domination victory. :(
I began to have also computer issue, despite I have a strong processor and graphic card.

Strategic view helps a lot with graphics issues. It's not that bad once you get used to it.

I went Order-Pagodas-Temple happiness.

It will be interesting to see whether Order or Freedom ends up being better. It was a tough choice. It's basically Skyscrapers vs. Half food specialists. Order will certainly be able to get up and running faster, but Freedom might be able to pull off a higher score in the long run due to more pop. I'm also running into a problem where there is not enough coal on the map to build factories everywhere.

The game certainly is different playing at this level. I was surprised to see my Happiness increasing as I started to carpet the map with settlers, finally ending up at +555! I've never seen that before.

Spoiler :

I ended up with a score above 7600, which I figure will get me a Participation Award. But I'll be darned if I slog through this one again lol.

Spoiler :

So far, I've had to save and quit twice due to graphical corruption, and I've had one crash. And I'm still not at t200!! Also, not having a record-breaking game for sure. At t197 (Equivalent of t290 on standard) I still haven't completed the tech tree.

And I JUST got the first vote due to not finding the last civ until ~t165ish... totally spaced that even though I wanted to delay World's Fair until I had mega-culture, I didn't want to delay passing votes that boost culture!!! Argh.

Still only like 30 cities.... So, yeah, not going to set a record with this playthrough, and definitely NOT playing this twice... turns.. they're so long.

Spoiler :

I see you placed your cities from the start to maximize your score. :D

Second game, and hope last one, I'm T217 and I haven't finish tech tree too. Despite 5000 bpt.

Turn 243, finally settled all my cities - 181 of them. :crazyeye:

I've never played like this before, so seeing numbers like 14k beakers is pretty amusing.
