GA II - Straight-Up DemiGod

1050-1150

The big event is the end of the Golden Age. Fiddle with scientists and sliders to deal with some happiness and cash flow problems and get to MT and still have some cash to upgrade the knights. Building projects are slowed but can turn entertainment and research tax down while conserving the learning time.

Clear all open contracts and then swap some silks for spices wth Ragnar.

Along about 1130 Alexander comes demanding silks and I tell him to stuff it...he leaves muttering something about "I'm going to tell my Daddy about this." Or maybe it was his horse, Bucephalus. Anyway, doesn't matter, he left.

Napoleanwas used to build a musketeer army. The Portugese were conducting military training exercises all over our western borders. There is a deal for silks to Portugal coming due shortly and I think he won't renew, he'll just take 'em.

Closing out the contract for Alex's incense is causing some unhappiness, but I couldn't find another lux source that I could buy.

We are researching towards Banks with a combination of scientists and cash. The core towns all have markets or are close to finishing them and the working citizens have been put to generating cash and science rather than shields.

Pre-turn - Teleportation ON.

Start by going through cities, to see if I can get that extra gold-piece Bede sometimes miss and which will satisfy me so much

I find 4gpt  I rearrange some tiles in Besancon and Tours to make them use some more shields, and we're back where we started, 15gpt. :) And Banking still in 3 turns.

Diplo shows us nothing more than the deal with Henry is up next turn.

So many old units and no money for upgrades. This will be a challenge. We are paying 130gpt in unit support! Yikes.

We have of the old stuff:

12 archers
15 spears
and 23 horsemen

And somewhat new:

8 cavs
22 musketeers
2 LB's

The AI prances around with rifles, what am I supposed to do here?

I also notice we have no settlers ready, in case we have to raze and replace something. Order one from Grenoble and another from Swazi.

I can't fight rifles without a decent army, so my gameplan will be to get Banking and then use all possible income to upgrade our military. Starting with horses. It will cost a fortune, but you don't think we can beat the AI with archers, do you? :D

And IF I have to fight, I would prefer the Greeks.

And btw, who built a reg cav?

1160AD - Silks to Henry is up for renewal, was 17gpt, we up it to 31gpt. Portugal have 8k gold!

The deal with Rome is also up, we paid 15gpt for furs. I just swap luxes this time and we are doing 52gpt.

I need a fair bunch of cavs before I can make a move on Greece, so every shiny goldpiece will be important.

The worst thing in this game (in CIV) is broken reputation, with no ways of repairing it. Once broken, the game is broken. Just sucks!

1170AD - We have 12 native workers, we have to rely on slaves to save gold. Join 3 of them to cities and we should join more later.

1180AD - We learn Banking, research nothing.

Upgrade our first horse to cav, at a cost of 150g it will be a long journey - one upgrade per turn. But we have no real choice, and fortunately we are building a few as well.

Gpt is 173 atm, all scientists changed to taxmen.

1190AD - Portugal starts Universal Suffrage! :twitch:

1200AD - Nothing of interest.

1210AD - Rome demands and gets 23g.

Vikings starts US too.

Portuguese rifle moves in to our territory, he might go to the jungle town. I hope.

1220AD - Rifles are just passing through.

1230AD - Nothing.

1240AD - Henry's mongrels are looking restless, rifles moving back and forth. A couple of cavs shows up near Iron Metropolis.

1250AD - Portugal sneak attack us.

GA2_portwar.jpg

We lose 12 units, mainly horsemen and kill 2 cavs on defense.

We're toast, or at least in very deep trouble.

There's enough gold to establish embassies with Rome and Vikings, so I do so.
Then I sign MPP with Rome and Greece. If next player want that with Vikings as well, it will cost around 50gpt.

Iron Metro and Bayonne is probably a lost cause, but I move our army there.

Kill a rifle and a cav.
Try to kill redlined elite cav with horse, not a chance in hell, and the Port. cav wins a leader. Kill them both with a cav.
Kill a cav, lose an archer.

I better leave it here, so next player can make his own choices and so I don't mess up any plans. Because I have no plans at all

There are a bunch of units that can be moved, especially 15 cavs in Cherbourg. Do we attack immediately or play defensive for a bit? That's why I don't want to waste any units, if the next better player got some ideas.

I hope the MPP's was ok, if for nothing else, just to divert some Portuguese troops. We can't kill them all by our obsolete selves. If we want to fork out the 50 or so gpt to vikings, we will have another ally.

This was a nasty surprise, here I sat and setup forces for a war against Greece, and this happens :)

GA2_Front.jpg

At least we have an army and soon to be golden age. :(

I suggest getting an MA against Portugal with Greece, and just build units. The situation looks pretty bleak. Get peace asap.

And civs building the Universal Suffrage? Err...looks like this game is going downhill FAST. ThERat, you're up, and you'll need some luck. :)

oh well

thought when I started to read we will fight the Greek, once I take over. We can't afford to lose Bayonne, else our salpeter is gone, right? What about abandoning Iron Metro and try to defend Bayonne with our Army and maybe, maybe can get the wine town and a few more. But we are stuck in a war for much longer since we signed MPP, which is good, with Henry so rich, he will just buy them all against us.

I just checked the save, a military allaince with Vikings will cost us only 24gpt, should we not do that instead of MPP which is so much more costly?

Ok, I got it and will play tonight (late night)

Bad, bad Portugee...

Might as well do a wrap-around with an MPP, we need the security blanket, as long as none of our other friends have designs on the Viking.

Looking at the save and trying to find a bright idea....

@goz, Henry's cav had me so nervous I couldn't think straight, so I'm not surprised I missed a few coins rolling around in the jungle. Wore the numbers off the ten-key trying to do the calculations.

ok , thought I'll wait til tonight to play my turns, but after I played 1 turn I got so engrossed, I played them all...
and well, it was fun, C3C at it's best

here the story

Pre-Turn
check things out. I rather abandon a lost case like Iron Metro. anyway we need salpeter and horses right now, not the iron
sign alliance with Vikings against Henry for 24gpt + 8g, WM (since it's much cheaper than MPP)
abandon Iron Metro and pull 2 musketeers back to Bayonne, kill a bunch of Cav's there but lose 1 Cav
change Bayonne to rax, if we want to defend that town, troops must be able to heal in between turns

IT miracolously the horses are not pillaged, but Henry moves in units in numbers
Poitiers and Cherbourg are harassed by Cav's but our musketeers stand :)
Rome and Grecce declare, of course. now Henry can try and fight the world, serves him right.
bayonne rax -> temple and we get palace expansion

1. 1255AD
kill all units outside Bayonne, play defensive, lose nth

IT Luckily Henry pulls some units back, but Poitiers and Cherbourg under heavy attack, lose 1 Cav and 1 musketeer :(

2. 1260AD
I rush rax in Cherbourg, we need it. I mainly defend against units in our land, this time no losses

IT Vikings want MPP for a mere 38gpt, no thanks
Poitiers is under heavy attack, we need more musketeers there, lose one Cav on defense

3. 1265AD
upgrade 2 horses, have to up lux to 20%, if only we can get those wines
Hamburg is now Greek
I want a leader and a Cav army so I can attack, but for now no leader luck. already 5 elite wins, lose one cav

IT lose a musketeer, Rouen riots :smoke:

4. 1270AD
elite win 6, nth
I attack Braga, since no Portugese units are left in our land and either we make or break it
ga21250c.jpg

I get only 6g, you gotta be kidding. 9 slaves
send settler there
elite win #7, nth

IT near Bayonne nice exchange of Greek and Henry units, lose our elite musketeer on defense at Cherbourg

5. 1275AD
Brest founded, ups our income to 127gpt
Hamburg is Portugese again
elite win #8 + #9, nth

IT lose another musketeer in Poitiers, but I see greek Cav attacks Isandlwahna, we should raze it soon

6. 1280AD
elite win #10, 11 nth, rest and heal preparing for assault

IT cav attacks our spear and retreats :D

7. 1285AD
elite win #12, need I say anything? upgrade our last horse
attack Isandlwhana
Cav dies vs rifle now 1/4
Cav wins and promotes
Cav retreats
Cav (2/4) defeats reg rifle
Cav retreats rifle now 2/3
Cav dies but rifle now 1/3
Cav retreats vs conscript rifle
Cav defeats conscript
elite Cav defeats 1/3 rifle
cav defeats 1/3 rifle and we raze town, but get 0g

IT our lux deal with Vikings is up, need to pay 9gpt to renew
many Greek Cavs seen, Henry seems to have a hard time, maybe we can even get our iron back
Rouen riots again

8. 1290AD
elite #13, nth
attack and capture Intombe, lose 1 cav in the process, get 0g, 3 slaves ( kept it since it is at pop 1 already)
want to keep settlers for better spots

IT Greek Cavs retreat wounded from Henry land

9. 1295AD
healing and preparation turn
I aim at Coimbra next

IT
nth much from Henry

10. 1300AD
wines back online, lower lux to 10% and MM, we make now 158gpt and have 373g, next player can decided what to do with it
my last move is to attack Coimbra, lost 2 Cavs but raze it, gain 8 slaves 0g
we have 2 settlers ready to move and found cities, we can strike Henry even more I think
we gained some land due to raze cities, next player can move units to suit the attack strategy
Guimares has ivory, and of course we want our iron back at Ulundi.
note, some Henry towns down to pop 1
one more thing, since the world is at war with Henry, our reputation is ok, we can strike gpt deals, I just didn't have any money left, but next player might want to get us some techs

here is our battle zone
ga21250d.jpg

Got it, this looks like fun.

Oh and ThERat, don't worry, I didn't interpret it as harsh. After all, I'm here to learn how to play on Demigod, so pointing out flaws is good :) .

Nice go, Sir Rat. Well done.

@viper
good that you understand the comments. here where I live right now, they cannot even take the slightest bit of critisism or suggestion to improve.
I myself thrashed our reputation in this game...

anyway, play slowly. let units heal and strike in force, I am sure we can get much more out of this war, our deals go for another 10 turns, so you have to warmonger anyhow. and a leader is up, what's wrong here with the RnG
For me that is the best aspect of the game, warmongering..haha, thanks Gozpel for setting up such a nice war for me

Cool, we now have some horses - but do we have iron anymore? Not that we need for Cavalry...

Agressive ThERat, nice job. Should we go for peace asap after the Alliances run out (or should we do it anytime, since our rep is already ruined?)

I'm on deck, but I probably won't be able to play. gozpel and I will switch, is that ok?

Preturn- I thing I'll get a few techs. Buy Astronomy from Greece for 371 gold and 34 gold per turn. It's probably a little too much, but I pay 64 gpt for Physics and 15 gold from Rome (how else will we progress in techs?) Portugal is in anarchy  .
IBT- Rome and Greece sign MPP. Vikings start US.
2
Mpondo is ours.
IBT- Greeks capture cities I want. Rome and Portugal sign peace. Rouen riots.
3
Bordeaux founded.
IBT- #$%@&! Mpondo flips, much of ouir army is lost.
4
Alex has Infantry now.
5
Mpondo captured.
IBT- Thank you. Portugese capture Mpondo.
6
Mpondo captured.
7
Rennes founded. Buy Magnetism from Alexander for 42 gpt, 430 gold, and WM
IBT- Romans start ToE.
8
Strasbourg founded.
IBT- Vikings start ToE. Portugal captures Bordeaux.
9
Bordeaux is ours again. WW hits bad, lux to 30%.
IBT- Bordeaux is razed by the Portugese. Few cities riot due to increased WW.
10
Note to next player: I would have signed peace with Portugal long ago but it would have trashed our rep... until now. I strongly suggest cancelling MAs and signing peace (WW is hitting bad and we can't conquer anymore. We also can get ToG from it, getting us to the Industrial Age.)

well, well our nice little Cav army is gone. I checked and from 23 we are down to 2...how did that happen?
let me guess?
IBT- #$%@&! Mpondo flips, much of our army is lost.
you should know that our culture stinks and a core Portugese city loaded with our units? nothing surprising to me
we better go for peace soonish, our military is very weak, if Greek attacks us we are toast

Of course, but the city had 20 units or so, and I thought that would significantly decrease a culture flip.

Got it.

@vipr, look at the map. Mpondo is less than a cavlaryman's canter from the Portugese capitol. And their culture count is probably three or four times ours....

@viper,

I understand your thinking about units. but try the mapstat programme just to get an idea. for this kind of town, you need a huge amount. I run the prgramme for you just that you get an idea how serious that is:

Mpondo has now a 6-7% flip probability even with 12 units garrisoned, in fact our lone musketeer army is in there screaming to be flipped away...:nono:

I kept Intombe because it's a jungle town. even if it flips it won't hurt us. to stack our own army in a potential flip town is plain suicide and it happened now 2x already...

MapStat hasn't been working on my computer, I posted in the thread but haven't gotten any solutions.
