GA II - Straight-Up DemiGod

We lost our whole army twice now, that just cracks me up  This together with NO resources for a very long time, makes this one of the trickiest games I ever played, I think.

Raze and replace is the only way to deal with huge culture neighbours. That is if we can build up another army anytime soon.

I don't want to see one more unit sitting in an enemy town, I don't even want to see any enemy towns at all. Burn them!

And Umtata flips! :aargh: [pissed] I'm so angry...

IBT- #$%@&! Mpondo flips, much of ouir army is lost.

when I read those messages I felt like crying.

2 times we had the chance to hit the AI, but we managed to vaporize our own strike force.
a war like this has to be played and planned carefully. maybe my turns looked agressive, but I did not play suicide, since we had plenty of Cav support.
We also do not need to settle every spot immediately once we raze. while still at war, this has to be done very carefully. else every new town will just be a new target.
but I feel, this game is sort of lost, I thought we could almost burn all Portugese town on 'our' island, now we got 2 Cav's left (it cost us a bomb to upgrade all the horses)
maybe bede and gozpel come up with some magic turns, but....

Game ain't gone 'til they carry me out on stretcher. So....will try to set goz up for some magic (goes looking for hat, rabbit, doves and scarves. at least we got silks)

No worries viper (lesson 1 -> Never keep more than one unit in conquered cities if you wanna keep it!) You'll get the hang of it :)

We'll need some miracles here, we've been behind since the word go.

I'm sure Bede find some ideas for me to use. Cavs are good still though and we need another lot of them.

Cleared all the expired deals and alliances and made peace with the Portugee getting ToG and some cash.

Then went back and renegotiated all the deals for silks to boost income. Fiddled with the citizen assignments to try and find a reasonable research strategy and discovered the best I could do was Steam Power in 11 or wait nine and try to steal it from the offshore nations for about half the price. Put a push on the econmony and jacked income to ~330 gpt, then with money in hand tried to steal Steam from Ragnar who was willing to sell it to us for 1500 +150gpt. Bad choice as Ragnar is a Fascist and the attempt failed, our spy was caught but Ragnar did not declare. Should have hit Julius as he is still a Republic. Income is such now that we can do 1 steal attempt every 8 or 9 turns from the offshore nations or every 5-7 from the neighbors.

Rome finished the ToE but no cascade to Universal Suffrage. Looks like Rome is running away with the tech lead.

Greece is Fascist and the population of Knossos keeps oscillating, looks like he's pop rushing military, though he's not showing much on the borders, just a couple of cavs and the odd infantryman.

It's possibble th Portugee lacks both coal and rubber as I am seeing no infantry in his territory. and only one short rail spur. It's possible his coal resource is near Intombe.

After the failed steal rushed culture in the border towns. Paris is turning out a cavalryman every four and Lyons and Marseilles a Musketeer every six and five respectively. The other core towns are building banks.

No rabbits, no hats, maybe a scarf and a dove or two.

Just so you guys know, I will be away December 23rd through January 2th. Please autoskip me until I'm back (starting on the 23rd.)

I lost my turnlog due to a crash, so here's a recap.

All cities were in good order and I didn't chase any goldcoins :)

Rome declared on the Vikings early and Ragnar already had a war going with Henry. By this time we got enough gold for an immediate steal, so I do the cheesy thing.

I buy Steam and spices for 125gpt and try to steal Ind. from Vikings. It fails and they declare, so we got Steam for 1440g.

We have coal next to Strasbourg.

Buy furs from Rome for 24gpt.

Build a bunch of workers to build railroads.

Mpondo flips to Portugal and I counter that by settling by the wines. Take a chance and move more units for garrison in Strasbourg and Rennes. We can't lose those cities and if they flip we can say goodbye to this game.

Use our economy to rush temples and courts, this looks rough enough, so another missed steal-attempt won't make much of a difference.

Rotten Greeks didn't wan't to pay anything for our wines, instead they demand it the turn after. Can't say no to feta-lovers.

Our railnet starts to look alright.

Ragnar doesn't want to talk yet, try to squeeze something useful out of a peace-deal.

Next player, please sort out taxmen and things next turn, when builds are done.
Change builds to whatever.
Continue sending troops to garrison our important towns, Rennes and Strasbourg, we can afford any flips.
And continue to use the economy to rush culture and courts where it's needed. See above :)

ok, got it.
But if I read GA's log again, does it mean that you want to take your turns before me, GA? Else I play tonight, I feel we should try and get RP to have at least infantry and arty so we can take another shot at Portugese.

ok, I'll play tonight and maybe Viper can take another shot before he is going for his deserved holidays. Might be too late for him though, today is 22nd already. (at least here in S'pore)

Pre-Turn
check things: military too weak, no money to steal, Vikings won't talk, cities got few citizens, nth much i can do here :(

IT press enter
great news Greece and Vikings sign against Portugal, maybe we better get some settlers ready for razed cities
Mpondo is Greek now (it kept on flipping back and forth during my turns) maybe we should join the fun later on when our deal expires in 3
we could use some more land

1. 1455AD
change some builds to settler

IT Now Vikings and Rome sign peace, no good

2. 1460AD
roading and MM

IT Vikings want peace, sure. why not?
I go for peace and get electricity for 120gpt
then strike another deal, RP for 115gpt + silks + wine

3. 1465AD
I see in horror that we got NO rubber, it's so close in Greek (2x) and Portugese hands, but we have none

IT deal with Portugal ends, some cities riot, I scroll forward to avoid more

4. 1470D
forgot last turn to steal from vikings. I do so now and they catch our guy and declare, income back to 368gpt
cheesy indeed

IT trade wines to Rome for 40gpt

5. 1475AD Romans building Hoover

8. 1490AD
we have nth to lose here, so I try an immediate steal with portugese, since we got enough money now. if we fail we need to go to war. anyway they fight Greece also. our steal succeeds, take industrialization

next player:
we can get rubber from Romans now, maybe can trade. there is a small island with unclaimed rubber, but we need to clear the land to settle
I have a frigate and galleon ready, need to fill with 2 workers then can send them there
I didnt renew our deal with Portugese in case we want to fight them

No rabbit out of the hat here. I could get us a meagre 3 techs, Greeks look suspiciously modern
next better player go ahead, maybe can do sth better. Ii started to use civil engineers in our corrupt cities to speed up builds, most land is railed RP helped a lot in that respect
viper, can you play before your holidays?

About time something went in our favor :)

Listening to the morning news here and hear we'll get another scorcher, around 37C. And my portable fan died the other day.

@gozpel: That's hot (I think it's summer in Australia now... it's winter here!) For you Fahrenheit people, that's 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Out here we had 65 high and 53 low (about 18.3 to 11.7C), where I'm going for Christmas it should be between -2 low and 32 degrees high Fahrenheit (-18C to 0C.)

Busy packing, only 5 turns.
Preturn- Don't see use for rubber, need cash... Want to get a loan but can't because of rep. Rome seems like they'll get a space win. Can't do any magic besides some larceny, which is what these turns will probably be all about.
1
Attempt immediate tech steal and fail.
3
IBT- I see a Greek bomber blowing up when the Portugese capture Ulundi. They're near the Modern Age.
4
Sign peace with Ragnar, get 112 gold and I give 4 gpt, that's enough for another quick immediate steal. Failed, Henry declares. Faro RAZED (I've learned my lesson :) .) Push my luck and go for another city, Mpondo razed, I even kill a Portugese MGL.
IBT- The evil Portugese capture New Paris. Marseilles and Grenoble riot. WW was annoying, I think lux may help.
5
Recapture New Paris. Burn Ulundi.

Well, it seems like we're not doing badly as badly as we could be. No magic, though.

I got it, will play tomorrow. Didn't seem like those turns were evenful...

gozpel: The temperature right now (8 pm) is 7.2 Celsius (45 degrees F). Not too bad for a winter day...
