GA II - Straight-Up DemiGod

nice to see Portugese disappear from our Island, but will that be enough?
Rome is building six parts, but has completed none
 wow when I checked they did not have any, we better think about wiping out Rome soon, send over a few armies (can we rush them?) filled with tanks. This is DG, so capital is surely filled with quite a few MIs, but how many? We should have a peep before we send over troops.
Once we have armies there, we must go for pillage-o-rama to make sure we have no issue.
We could also use our new strength to get at the greeks and extort more techs.

Now that I think about it I regret that tech steal. Should've investigated the cities, if they're building parts, sabotage?

2 armies ATM but we could rush if necessary.

Nice work, vipr. Way to take it to the Portugee.

@GA, we need to cram the former Portugee land as full of towns as possible. It will be a major help to unit support costs. Towns shouldn't need more than pop6, 3 or 4 farmers depending on terrain available. Everybody should be blood-sucking revenooers. Every little burg is worth 3gpt to the treasury and every bloodsucker is another 3gpt.

The situation with Rome and its spaceship is getting even more nerve racking. These turns took a while, so only 4.

Turn 0 - 1770 AD
I want to get peace with Portugal soon. War weariness takes its toll.
I micromanage corrupt cities in the south to get settlers quicker. We currently pay 54 gold/turn for unit support. A couple cities can helps us financially.
We take a look at Rome's army and see it has 183 mech infantry and 50 modern armor. I can only imagine how many are in Rome. 7 tactical nukes, wonderful.
I hit enter reluctantly...

IBT: We build Heroic Epic.
Rome completes two space ship parts. They have 4 in progress.

Turn 1 - 1772 AD
Micromanagement and hit enter. We need some $$$ and transports if we're to stop Rome.

IBT: Rome completes a 3rd spaceship part.

Turn 2 - 1774 AD
We load some units onto a transport.

IBT: Rome completes a 4th spaceship part.

Turn 3 - 1776 AD
Found a new city on some Ivory. Micromanage cities for happiness.
We rush a transport.

IBT: Greeks destroy Portugese. There goes war weariness. :)
Rome completes a 5th spaceship part. :(

Turn 4 - 1778 AD
I investigate a couple Roman cities high in production to see if I can see the spaceship city to sabotage the 6th peace.
We find it! Rome! :D They finish it in 1 turn. But we need gold, and now. Immediate would cost 3807, we have 2914. Can we get enough money?
For 266 gpt and 2 luxuries, we can get 1000 from Rome. I decide it's ok. The gold isn't too important and if they declare, we get it back...
Our attempt: they declare war. Dang! :( But wait! We successfully sabotaged production in Rome as well! Our agent, "Gweeto", was caught. At least it will take Rome some time to rebuild it.

Comments: I'll stop here on turn 4. We have 2 infantry and 3 mechs and 3 TOWs that are Roman in the south. We need to use our artillery and bombers in Plainville to decimate them, so we can attack Rome. I suggest getting some transports of armies and tanks filled, and park them outside Rome. When they get close to finishing the SS, raze the city. Rinse and repeat. Do we have enough units now or do we have no choice but to attack?

Now it starts getting hairy. We are going to lose Akron so we need to be prepared fot a WW hit.

 a Modern Era war with IA units.

 on the sabotage. Bought some time and maybe the Romans will go back to war-time production.

Query: do we want to mobilize? The production boost for transports, armies, tanks and bombers will help, I think.

we need to have a few armies, because Rome would surely hit us with cruise missles and their bombers, so do bring some anti-air units along as well, or we will be pulverized I guess
I never had such a situation in a game, this looks great
we should mobilize, I agree and we need plenty of units, if only we could take out their crucial resources
good luck Bede

Then we will need transports, and destroyers for AA and sub defense.

That's a lot of building to do. Mobilizing now!

Whoo, boy. Barrels o' fun and games. Let's see if I can get it all straight.

First part of the reign was spent checking out the benefits of mobilization and fighting off the Romans. Mobilization isn't worth much to us. This is such a bunch of dedicated MM'ers that mobilizing just gives us shield overruns. One problem we have is that the only coastal town with any shields is Paris, so building transports and destroyers is a real pain in the pocket book.

The big news is that Rome's Modern Armor landings were handled with not much pain: shell 'em into shock then bomb them to death. After summarily dealing with two landings of six each, Julius called his Mediterrenean pal Alex and signed him up in an alliance against us......we lost two luxes, and the Greeks ripped apart the center of the old Zulu lands. Something like six towns fell on the the first wave across the center. Spears and archers just aren't much good against tanks  The only towns of any consequence are Brest in the south and Besancon north of Paris.

Anyway, so now it's time to spank Alex. Rip through the old Portugese cities with artillery and armor, laying waste to them, and bomb his invaders to a standstill.

After that little bit of carnage Julius is willing to negotiate a peace treaty for the paltry sum of 80g. Don't have enough in the kitty to buy anything from him, though.

After retaking the towns in the center lost to Alex's first wave Alex is willing to talk and gives up Mass Production and Communism (we need Police Stations to deal with War Weariness) for 200 gpt.

Use the resulting peace dividend to buy Electronics from Ragnar after threatening war for only 190gpt. Then send George Smiley to Rome but James Bond is entirely too slimey for Alex and he redeclares. Reorganise the forces for assaults on Argos in the north, Delphi south of Marseilles, and Knossos in our east. and teh old German towns in the west. They don't fall easily, most are burned, and I lose two tank armies in the process. but I keep Knossos and Argos .

Finish the cop shops in the core and rush settlers out of the plains towns to fill in old Portugal and Germany (every new settlement is worth 5gpt right out of the box, so keep cramming them in down there).

Had to do lot of conscription to keep Alex stalled after his first wave, so his second attack is stopped in its tracks. All his attackers are coming from the west with an occasional tank out of Herakleia. He is pretty gassed, though.

Somewhere in all the bloodshed Julius declared on Alex and Ragnar took Brest from the Greeks then signed a peace treaty.

Built a lot of AA units and they actually did a good job of decimating the Roman carrier based bombers and defending Marseilles from Greek tanks  D=6 against land units so they have 2/3 the defensive value of a tank. Pretty handy in a crunch and they are cheap to build.

Our lone tank army is healing in Rouen and Paris is back to building an army. The artillery and air force are concentrated in the west. Eretria is the next Greek city to get the torch (and with it Greece's only source of rubber, I think). Their only source of oil that I can see is west of Rennes at Rhodes.

Rome now has seven space ship parts built and two in process.

My one attempt at sabotage wrecked a bomber in Rome.

We are at 40% lux and WW is a problem but the cop shops in the core are helping.

If we can keep the pressure on Greece without falling into civil disorder, do it, Alex will talk but isn't giving anything meaningful.

Didn't get any navy built and a Roman sub sank one of our transports loaded with tanks on the opening. :p

Have fun, goz. You're no longer surrounded but I didn't make much progress on our Roman problem.....

Took a few extra turns just ' cause I was having so much fun spanking Alex and I didn't want to turn the game over with a lot of rubbleized towns and no victories.

Just a note that GA III will most likely be another Demigod attempt - all settings will be discussed. I won my first demigod attempt today, so I'm getting a bit more comfortable with the level. Sign up if you want to reserve a position.

In if you'll have me.

of course I am all in for another GA game

@bede
a question, I looked at the save and our income now is almost down to 200gpt (at 0%lux) from 900gpt. Is that all due to loss of cities or pop loss? I am just amazed how much we could squeeze out, now with much less tight builds it's just too low to even think of sabotaging Rome :(
at least we tried until the end :)

We lost three or four very wealthy cities and only gained back two of them at very reduced populations.

If we can drag Alex to a Peace Treaty then War Weariness will go away and the treasury will build back up pretty quick.

After taking a look at Roman military I just had to laugh and decided to just let them build their space-ship. 250 mechs and 60-70 MA's, and the rest including nukes and stuff. A couple of pillaging armies wouldn't be able to do anything to stop this, even if they managed to cross the sea. Rome's navy would crushed any attempts.

Even if I spent our income trying to find the city which were building the last part, I never found it. :)

We take Herakleia 1812, Eritrea 1814, Thermopylae 1818 and Athens 1820.

Peace with Greece, buying Rocketry for 403gpt. Plant spy and succeed

Reason for peace is that Rome are on their 2 last parts for the space-ship. And I don't want to waste time on the impossible.

In a few turns...

I'm waiting...

And waiting...

Still waiting...

Finally!

Valiant attempt, all.

Could we have made contact with Rome and the other continent sooner, and used phony wars to slow them down, or the contact to speed us up?

We got caught up in contending for resources at home and got really slowed down.

Good game, everyone, learned a lot. Hopefully we'll have better luck in GAIII.

well, some lessons learned here...never trade a lux from a foreign city, else it flips and reputation is gone :(
never ever place an entire army in a flip risk town. anyway with resources the whole game would have turned out differently.

one real lesson for me was how much we can achieve with good MM, it was just amazing to see income of 900gpt with such little land
