Galley graphical representation in Civ6 (again, still this little neko still finding the way out of this modding rabbit hole meow =^w^= )
Sure this is Mediterranean design. (with too many iron pieces than usual, and lack of gazing eyes painted or etched into the prowl). with rams fitted to its prowl. but in this thread ...
Earliest evidence of Sails is on rock art drawing from Egypt showing a boat with both sails and oars, dated to around 6000 BCE. BUT this is probably a river boat - the Nile has the useful feature that the current flows north while the prevailing winds blow south, so you can use the wind and a sail to go south against the current.

Earliest confirmed non-river craft with a sail is shown on a painted disc from Kuwait (Persian Gulf) dated to 5500 - 5000 BCE

Earliest picture of a warship is from Egypt around 2300 BCE, which shows oared galleys with sails on the coast (non-river) carrying both armed warriors and cargo. The earliest warships were all simply galleys carrying warriors, because the iron or bronze Ram that made the ship itself a weapon wasn't invented until around 750 BCE, about the same time as the first 2-banked galley, the Phoenician Bireme.
1. The first sail attached seagoing watercraft is 5,000 BCE (Before the standard game begins)
2. The first confirmed picture of seagoing galley (watercraft with many oars and a big sail (or maybe two) is Egyptian ones. dated back 2,300 BC. Also the first known 'Naval Battle' is Ramses III VS 'Sea People Barbarians'. also the first known instance of 'range attacking galleys'

^ Melee attacking galleys with an archer on each of crow's nest.

^ Another Egyptian galley from the same battle this one is archer galley. the first known warship with fore and aft castles. is this 'Ancient era' ranged warship as well as being melee?
3. Bronze or iron ram bow isn't invented by Ancient Era. but first shown up in the early Classical era (750 BC) around the same time Greeks fielded their Penteconters (superior galley) and Phoenicians introduced alternate solution when moners had reached its limit in (tactical) speeds-- stacking oarsmen benches and voila--Biremes. but it didn't phase out moners. AFAIK some became pirate galleys (What 'Naval Raider' should begin and not to become submarines particularly no subs can do coastal raidings nor deployed to do so (not counting Japanese midget subs of 1941)... in the other thread there's proposals to have Naval Recon class a separate unit class to BOTH naval melee and submarines. (and I began to agree with that proposals... https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/navy-in-civ7-pirates-and-torpedoes.681996/ ).
Here comes a question.....
1. What kind of galley did Fxis chose as a model for Civ6 eponymous unit? is it Lembos? Liburnia or what? (Both of which are premier recon/pirate ships, note that Liburnia is an improved design over Lembos (which sometimes shown without a sail) )
Civ6 Standard Galley.jpg

Sure it is so small. too small to be even 'bireme', let alone 'trireme'... both of which are preferred naval melee units of that era (and eventually evolved into Quadriremes and Quinqueremes and later Super Polyremes) and has iron ram bows (not sure of piercing or flipping attacks, but if it doesn't punch a donut hole on enemy ship, at the same speed it could flip the same enemy unit instead (or did it?). Are you sure that this design did not exists in Trojan War (Mycenian Fleet) but instead hellenic (or even Romans)?
2. What are the actual designs of Mycenian galleys? (including Odysseus ships) how does it looks like? does it looks much like Egyptian barges or like Argo?

This one ?? (Actually 'Raider Barge'.. Naval recon of the Late Antiquity, successor to Canoe, both of which being Naval Raider/Recon both by Tag Class and Promo Class)... this design is heavyily based on Egyptian barge.
