Galleys into Ocean Tiles

I remember in a past game I was able to move galleys into ocean tiles, despite the manual says this is not allowed, and I also was no where near getting the techs to unlock ocean crossing.

I never thought about it much, but now in a game this case could be important.

These tiles were ocean tiles that were adjoined by a coastal on each side. They also had my culture in the actual ocean tile. Is this how it normally works, or did I run into a weird bug issue? If it's normal, do I still need to have culture in that ocean tile? I haven't played much 3.17 so if this is something new I'm not up to date on any of it.

You can sail into ocean tiles that are within your cultural borders. :)

This is important -- otherwise your fishing boats wouldn't be able to get to your ocean-based fish until astronomy!

Also it was once possible to go through ocean tiles of other civs' culture, but I'm pretty sure this is no longer the case in BtS.

But if he DoWs, can he force his way into your ocean tile? If he can force his way into your culture land tiles throw DoW, it should work the same in the ocean?

Posted this in your other thread, but no he cannot. Just tested it in a sample game.

It's not the same concept as land tiles... you can't go through others' ocean tiles through open borders either, declaring war won't change that.

You can only go through ocean tiles under the control of your culture. Open borders with a civ under control of the ocean tile isn't good enough.

Which leads to a funny and probably non-intentional game feature: non-reciprocal trade. If you own the ocean tiles that separate you from another empire on another landmass, and neither has Astronomy, you get trade routes with them, but they get nothing in return.

Non-reciprocal trade.... I like that term.

You spend too much time on the game :p

One thing I noticed in my last game was Shaka was hiding his boats in the ocean. I build a few ironclads (I know, I know, they're useless. But whatever - I was in a tech lead and only cared about a few coastal cities on my continent), and walked them around. But Shaka just kept most of his galleys and triremes in the ocean, so desperately close to my ironclads, but just out of reach.
