Gambling should be banned

Ban gambling?

Anyway, I agree with Pasi that gambling is a social ill, and that society would be better off without it. But it's not something I can support banning: I don't believe it's the state's place to do so. It is, however, the state's place to prevent exploitation, ideally through strict regulation.

If not the casino then who?

Uh, the people he plays against? Even if you win $100,000 on slots, you're not winning it from the casino. Casinos don't lose money on gambling. They may lose money over all due to overhead, the hotel-side of what they do, but they don't lose it at the tables. The odds intentionally favour them.

he won it in poker
to make himself feel better he gives 25,000 to a gambling rehab program

i'm only slightly against casino's. Ban the hell out of state sponsored lotteries though.

No, if idiotic poker players want to donate their money to me, its their free will.

No one is pointing a gun at them and forcing them to gamble. Its their money, if they want to risk it against other people, they should be able to.

Many people see it as fun.

No, but I do support programs that help cut down compulsive and destructive gambling such as advertising groups that help people who gamble too much, self imposed bans enforced by the enterprise (basically you can ask the club/casino to stop you the next time you try to gamble), banning tools of blatant psychological manipulation, etc

Outright banning the whole enterprise won't help

Gambling should be promoted more. Since Malus Agricola does it, so should my home state of Connecticut. Lower the gambling age to 12 years old so children learn about risk in real life.

Correct - In fact if the casino isn't profiting at 2.3% from gambaling the state will shut them down (in Nevada anyway)

Right but a serial killer isn't my problem so long as I'm not the one being chopped up into little pieces and buried inside the guy's crawlspace. I'm sick and tired of people offering up "it doesn't affect you so it's not your problem" as an excuse for tolerating social evils. If everyone operated on that philosophy, nothing would be illegal, and society would not function. Face it, folks, no matter where you live there will always be limits on what you can do.

I'd advise you to move to Somalia where you really can do whatever you want provided you have a big enough gun.

a serial killer is violating your rights and the law, you CHOOSE to gamble at a casino. you dont choose to get killed by a serial killer, a serial killer breaks the law and violates your rights.

Les - I don't like pawn shaps in my are because it encourages crack heads .... there's nothing I can do about it though.

People elect to use these services.

State sponsored gambling is fine with me too, it raises money for good stuff like education.

They don't really spend it on education. (technicly they spend the money from the lottery on education, but then they take money from other things out of education as a result.)

There's all different kinds of gambling, from casino games to sports betting to street corner dice games. To me, the truth of the matter is nobody's making you put your money on the line. If you're a grown up I think you should be allowed to gamble. You can call it a social ill if you want to but then again so is alcohol and I'm sure plenty of other things that are perfectly legal.

LOL

You really think government is going to shut down and lose all that money? Here is a question, what is the difference between legal and illegal gambling? Which party is missing from the illegal gambling?
