Game crashes after selecting directx

I got my copy today in mail (I live in Europe) but I can't start the game up. Problem is that I can't even access the opening cinematics because the game crashes with a windows pop-up saying the program had to be closed. My computer should meet all the requirements:

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.00GHz
Windows Vista x64 SP2
ATI Radeon 4850 512MB
4GB DDR2 Memory

I tried to reinstall it but it didn't help. Updated directx, catalyst with no effect. What annoys me is that the program doesn't even give explanation why it shut down so I'm really clueless here

It happens on both DX9 and DX11. Loads a few seconds and then it gives the pop up.

I have that Documents/My Games -folder, but there's no Civilization V there . Only Beoynd the Sword.

I believe the installation is complete since I validated it with Steam and it said it was ok apart from 1 file which it fixed. Still doesn't work.

Yes, I think it downloaded something after the installation was complete. The updating is set to automatic so it should update it whenever there is a new patch.

Then I wonder why I don't have that civ5 folder there? All other games I have installed and played recently have worked fine and as I said, there's already that Civ4 folder.

EDIT: might add that my windows is in Finnish.

It should be updated. Says "Ready to play" on the status column. I restarted Steam and it doesn't download anything. The filepath C:/Users/My Documents/... is "C:/Käyttäjät/Tiedostot/..." so it does have those ä letters.

Ok, now I found out that whenever I try the "Verify integrity of game cache", it always says that 1 file is wrong and that it will download it. I did it 3 times in a row but it always says that 1 file is missing/wrong, so obviously it doesn't really fix anything

I ahve exactly the same problem as you, although my account name has no special characters, I too don't have the documents folder installed for Civ V and have the same verify integrity issue :(

Same problem here. I choose the Direct X 9 option (the other one doesn't work either), and then nothing. Not even the error message others got. I just played last night for Sid' sake!

Freaking bloatware...

No, it only says that 1 file is bad and that Steam will redownload it. Here's a picture if it helps.

Hi, I have the same problem, even the civ folder misses and there is not a recognizable civ icon on desktop (it is just a general file icon). Please, if you finally find a solution, report it here. I will do the same. Thanks!

Good (not really:crazyeye:) to know that I'm not the only one with this problem. I tried to download the game from Steam and let it install it from there but it didn't help.

So the problems still are:
- Game crashes right after selecting either of the DirectX options
- No Civ5 folder in C:/users/username/documents/my games/
- There's always 1 bad file when trying to verify the cache on Steam

I also have the same problem. I decided to try out the Steam demo before purchasing, and it doesn't even start up. Just pops up with the regular 'has encountered a problem and has to close' XP error box.

Do you guys all have the same problem with the Demo?

Also, could you create a user account with NO special (non-English) characters and install the game there to see if that corrected the problem?

I haven't tried the demo. I just tried to download it from Steam, but even after unistalling the game Steam doesn't let me download it. It starts downloading the full Civ5 game instead.

My user account doesn't have special letters so the problem probably isn't there. I tried to move the Documents folder to C:/ and reinstalled the game but it didn't help either.

I have the same problem that all of this guys, and I played the demo without any problem for the last 3 days, so I cant understand this problem. My user account is "Oldrik" so no special characters also.

There's discussion of this on the 2Kforums too. Tech Jamie says something about getting the errorlogs so I'll put em here too(translated to english):
