Game Crashes When In City View

I've been looking through the forums and I haven't seen this issue with anyone else.
I recently have been crashing hard either when i go into a certain (seemingly random) city's City View. The screen blanks and alt-tab and ctrl-alt-del have no effect. I have to restart my computer.
If i reload the game and avoid entering any city's City View it's ok and later, I can view city's fine (even the cities that formerly caused the crash).
I've tried to clear the cache but i can't fine the directory (did they move it in the last patch?). I've updated my video drivers (NvIDIA GeForce 7800 GS) and I'm running an AMD Athalon 64 3800+ (2.41 ghz) w/ 1 gig Ram, XP SP2, and a Snd Blaster Audigy 2 ZS.
Thanks
Ryan

edit - i just crashed out while in the normal world view at normal zoom, i'm updating my sound drivers now, we'll see if it works

- try playing with EnableAudio=0 (ini file option) if you think sound might be the problem
- can you monitor GPU temperature while playing? try drastically lowering resolution/settings to see if the frequency of crashes decreases
- are the crashes more frequent on larger maps/later eras?
- are the crashes more common after long play sessions?

I've been playing on standard size map, and i haven't gotten to the later eras yet on this PC

they don't seem to be, last nite (when i crashed out of the normal view) i had only been playing a couple of turns, but sometimes i can go all nite w/out crashing

I'll try disabling sound tonite if updating my sound drivers didn't work. thanks for the ideas!

well, i just reinstalled civ, no luck. then i tried disabling audio in the ini, no luck. now it seems to get stuck in one place , but when i started up today i got a bit further then i did when i crashed last nite.

so it seems like it gets to a point, crashes, i reload the autosave and crash when i get to that point again.

i'm thinking it may be sound related because before the sound was just hanging (repeating the last second or so of audio), but this last time the sound got all garbled, then hung. but then again, it crashed even w/ audio disabled.

anyone have any more ideas?

My cache directory is here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\My Games\Civ4\cache
However, I have not used the default install path, so...

If an autosave is consistently crashing.. hmm.. try to post that save here. Maybe we will experience crashes too.

Have you been using some mods? Perhaps wrongly installed? If you opt to reinstall again, make to manually erase all civ folders after uninstalling.

Is it just this one game you're playing right now that is crashing? Start another game.

I looked in there (civ4 folder in my docs) and didn't see any cache, i'll look again when i get home

nope, no mods, though when i did reformat, i left my save files, does that save the cache too?

I usually only play one game at a time, but this is the third game i've been having problems with.
It used to work fine, i don't remember changing any settings (but i reinstalled just in case) but i can't figure it out, it used to work fine!! I had it installed when it first came out and hadn't been playing again till recently, but i'm the same computer, i may have upgraded my video card since then, i can't remember when i got it, but other than that my config is the same......
