I've recently upgraded to to Windows 7.

When playing Civ4 BTS, It will work for a while and then freezes. Typically, I hear a buzzing noise. After a couple of minutes, I get what looks like the old Blue Screen of Death and then the system reboots.

This happens with annoying frequency, sometimes in the middle of a turn, or more likely, at an end of turn OR when opening or starting a game.

I am patched to 3.19 and vanilla is patched to 1.61...
I beleive that the system run a couple of patches on drivers when it was upgrading.

Any ideas??

I was thinking about uninstalling everything and reinstalling everything. So would this be:
1) Uninstall BTS
2) Uninstall Vanilla
3) delete \my Games\ (applicable stuff)

4) reinstall vanilla.
5) run vanilla 1.61 patch

6) reinstall BTS
7) run BTS 3.19 patch

Or is there a step I'm missing here? Can you upgrade direct to 1.61/3.19??

Thanks.

the below should be exhaustive - though a hot reboot is usually not caused by the game itself.
what does the blue screen say? What operating system is this?

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.19 (download it fresh from here).

I have a little more of an update on this... The "blue screen" comes ang goes so quickly, it is hard to readd all the data on it, but it seems to suggest a possible driver problem. I did a complete re-install and that seemed to help. But, I just noticed something else.

I've been getting an error message about an "unusable voice capture device". Based on another post in another thread, I updated the configuration (INI) file. I did not get the message for several days, but it returned. SO, I went to change it back and found that the INI file has only about 10 lines in it - TOTAL. What ould be up with that?? Could that somehow be related to my other problem??

I got the "voice capture device" problem as well and fix the config ini file, but the problem persists. I suspect the main problem is that the graphic driver cant no longer handle the game. My advice is to play smaller maps and try to win before industrial or modern ages. Otherwise, your graphic driver may crash.
