    <font size=2>GAME OF THE MONTH #1</font>

    Start: 2/16/2001
    End: 3/16/2001

    Game Info:

    - Normal size random map
    - Emperor level
    - 6 Civilizations
    - Raging horde barbarians
    - You start with 2 settlers and 4 techs (lucky you!)

The game is saved to a saved game (GOM01.sav). I used Civ2 Classic to create the saved game so everyone should be able to play it.

Download the file (5 KB) today and start the game. Let's see who can have the highest score or Quickest Win! NOTE: cheaters are not welcomed!

At the end of the contest, top 3 players and the Quickest Win player will have their saved games and names posted in a new Hall of Fame dedicated to GOTMs.

Good Luck and Happy Civing! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

PS: Feel free to discuss the game below and talk about your progress...

    Thanks Thunderfall.

    And please everyone, NO SPOILERS!
That means, no comments like "The Babylonians have this island just to the north-west of Rome". Please. (Actually if you're taking part and going for the highest score, I guess you won't want to reveal this stuff.)

On the other hand, comments like "It's only 2450 and I have 25 cities" are probably OK, even if we don't believe you!

Would it not be better if "Game of the Month" was from the 1st until the last day in every month??
I think that it's very cool that you responded so fast Thunderfall, but since this is the very first game we could make it from today until the 28/2 as some kind of test game and then we could begin for real!!!
The name more or less says it, "Game of the Month!!"

I'd agree. This this first game may count as well. You only don't have a lot of time to play it.

It's anyway a very good idea!! I mean, I get bugged all the time whether I want to play a CivLadder game (no offence; keep asking). But this is a good competition and I can plan it myself. So, thanks!

Here's an important problem: it's possible to save your game before you explore a tribe. Then, when barbarians appear, you can reload the game. Is this allowed, or do we have to make a gentlemen's agreement not to do this?

Are we allowed anyway to reload a savegame when things get messy, or e.g. you accidently have a revolution?

Well since it is considered cheating to reload all the time, I don't think that it is allowed!!!
The only problem is that we can easily make a gentleman’s agreement but who is to say if everybody keeps it - no one.

I agree that we should make this game last until the 28th of this month.
Than it is also easier for everyone to know what game it is example) it is the March game

And i think that everyone can play the way he wants to. But i always say ONLY SAVE WHEN YOU QUIT PLAYING FOR A WHILE
AND NEVER EVER ENABLE CHEAT !!!!

Good questions Matrix. My feeling is that, since you can't enforce save-reloads, we have to have a "gentleman's agreement. (Personally I HAVE TO save every turn, sometimes several times a turn, as my power line is so glitchy the PC crashes so often, and I don't have a UPS.)

So I would say we should agree NOT to reload
    * if the hut is not to our liking,
    * if the spy doesn't destroy the city walls (etc.)

I must admit I have reloaded from a save when I've hit the wrong key by mistake and either revolution has happened accidentally. Or when I've sent a unit accidentally onto a mountain when I was trying to send it on a very long rail ride right around the world and doing it manually because the auto-goto function sucks.

Apart from that I have a recommendation...
How about if we all make sure we save our games regularly. And then if we win we can post all the saves to a personal web-site for anyone to investigate and challenge us if they suspect foul play. I personally use a game record like this so I can go back and analyse where I went wrong or save the things I got right. A 20Meg website has room for more than a 100 saves.

    Learning to trust is easy.
Learning to be trustworthy is more difficult.
Many people are dishonest even in their closest relationships. That's one reason the world is as it is.

I've been a member of CivFanatics for exactly one month. In that time, I already know who I would trust and who I wouldn't trust. But there are plenty more who I don't know enough about yet to trust or distrust.

Trust is like respect. No one deserves it as a right. We all have to earn it.

Put my vote in with stormerne's idea.
1)Reloading is ok when you make a mistake.
2)No reloading on huts or when dips/spies don't get the effect you want.

Plus, GOM should be monthly. I am grateful for the chance to play in it.
    Thanks.

Trustworthiness will never be learned unless we learn to trust. Yes, it is fraught with the possibility (inevitability) of dishonesty, but we need to have a "gentelman's agreement" not to cheat in these ways. I'm not viewing this as an organized, official contest, but as a way for me to compare what I did with some other players. So if someone does cheat, I'm not that concerned (which is not to say I wouldn't support disciplinary action against cheaters!) I'll download tonight, and in a few months I'll come back and see how the rest of you all did (doubt I can finish in one month-very limited free time)

Different issue, same topic: Why just post High scores. It's very difficult to spend the time necessary for a high score with only one month. Why not also post quickest win, either by SS or conquering (or both). After all, different strategies would be involved.

    Hoo ah! Count me in.

And GAWD, please let there be nobody so insecure in themselves that they feel they need to cheat.

You are welcomed! I hope you all have fun playing. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

Don't forget to saved the game in 0 AD, 1000 AD, and right before the end of the game. If you forgot to save the game in these years, it's OK; just save the game around the specified years.

Edit: I don't mind people reload the game several times in a game... I do that sometimes too. But if you need to reload 5 times in front of a goody hut, you're a loser. No one should feel compelled to cheat because Game of the Month is intended as a fun and informal contest. You have nothing to lose.

How about a category for the fastest person to turn in a finished game <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0> I am in the year 880 AD right now <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>
I am going to post on my geocities page a little timeline on my civilization. There will be some spoilers, like locations of where I chose to put cities and the tiles contained in the city squares. You have been forewarned.
The page isn't up as of me typing, but it will be a few minutes afterwards.

I read a quote in a civilization FAQ once about reloading before entering goodie huts. It said something to the effect of "it's a little to close to cheating for my liking. before you know it you'll be saving and reloading before and after every battle - and that's just pathetic"
