Game runs fast but stops responding often

I just got Civilization V not too long ago. It works very well, whether it's on a duel map or late into a huge map there is minimal infrequent lag and late-game turns never take longer than 15 seconds for the game to process. So I'd say the performance is almost perfect except for the fact that the game can't seem to sustain this for more than half an hour before it suddenly freezes and comes up with the generic "Civilization has stopped responding and needs to close" message.

No warning, no winding down with accumulating lag, none of that. Just near perfect one second and then frozen the next.

At first I thought it was maybe the mods I'd subscribed to, but even with them all disabled I still get these half-hourly freezes even on a vanilla duel map.

I can live with this because I increased the frequency of the autosave after this started happening (it didn't happen on the first day I got it and I played it for hours without interruption). But it is very jarring and obviously a big interruption for a game where you have to think hard and my attention span is very poor. It takes almost 10 minutes to get the game back up and running again due to the long loading times and by this point the sitting and waiting has dulled my enthusiasm. I quite often just go do something else after a crash rather than resume the game.

If it helps here are the system specs that I know of. If you need more please let me know. By the way I'm not very computer literate so I have no idea what specs are relevant and which aren't, or what they even mean. But I think they're within the requirements, could someone please let me know if something isn't within the requirements?

You're computer looks like it should be good enough to play it at least on decent settings. Some of your computers components are better than mine and my computer doesn't have this problem.

You could try to verify the integrity of the game cache, although I'm still not sure if that would help anything, but I think I've seen people talk about doing that on here before. To do that, I think you have to go to your Steam games library, right click on Civ5, click "Properties", and then on the window that pops up click "Local Files". There will then be a button that says "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". Just click that to verify the cache, and hopefully it will help something(someone correct me if that wasn't how you do that).

If that doesn't work, you could try reinstalling the game.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Tends to happen more frequently the later in the game it gets, which makes me think that it might be a graphic card issue, as there will be more graphic information to handle in late game. Is there any way that one can get information on what made the game crash - logs or something?

For the record, my system is:
Processer: AMD Phenom II x4 955
Video: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
RAM: Pretty sure I got 4 Gb, although I couldn't find information on this.
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
I run the game in DX9 because DX10/11 insta-crashes when I try to start the game in this mode.

I dunno, but mine definitely doesn't have to do with how far into the game I am. Rather it seems more related to how long I have been playing or how many moves I've made. Late or early in the game it crashes after about a half hour.

But you said DX9 works better for you? I might give it a try and report back.
