Game settings question

Got a question on the advanced settings you can select when creating a new game, Im kind of a Civ noob, played 4 but not a huge amount.

How do the different variables such as world age, climate, etc effect the game? I could not find this information in the manual.

Older worlds have fewer mountains, as they have weathered away.

Hot has more desert, less ice.

Ah i see, it changes the world generation (I was wondering if it altered the dates or something)

Yeah, those settings just affect the generated map

There was an option in Civ4 where you could choose the starting era. Didn't use it then and haven't looked for it in Civ5, but it might be there somewhere.
