Game Speed - What is it?

Sorry for such a nubie question, but I can't find an explanation that I understand for the game speed setting. What does this impact? The mapping of turns to years or something else entirelly?

The faster the speed, the more things happen "per turn" and turns span more years.

Its the number of turns in the game so (from memory):-

Online - 250
Quick - 330
Normal - 500
Epic - 750
Marathon - 1,500

And the faster the speed, the quicker the max game length. A Standard game is 500 turns, Epic is 750 (from memory)... and Marathon -my fav - is 1500 turns.

Yes, as others have said, it affects max turns and the number of years that pass by each turn. In all speeds, the game ends in the year 2050 (I think?).

As you may have expected, build/research times scale with the game length, so that a granary that takes 30 turns to build in Marathon only takes 5 turns to build in Online.

As an aside, this means that, for anyone who is struggling with barbarians, you could try playing a faster speed because you can build more units before the barbarian scout finds you and brings all his buddies.

so why not just try different speeds (online vs marathon, for ex.) and see what differ in the games?
