I feel this is the one thing bothering me with the game. I spend way too much time in these ages, and it sure would be nice to have more focus on the modern era.

Anyone else feel this is a problem?

are u serious?? ... u want more time spent in the modern era?? i would have thought it would ghave been better if an equil amount of time was spent in all the eras .... i think the ancient era is just bypassed and lacks GREATLY ..... but at least it is much better than civ2 in this regard

Not at all. I would rather that the modern era didn't appear quite so quickly - and I'm talking pre-1.17 patch here. My fav by far is the Industrial Era. If and when I ever become a capable scenario editor, an 1860-1870 era or Guns of August scenario will definitely be my first.

The ancient era is okay, and I could live with another hour or so worth of playing time in it. Depends on whether you're in a Pangea or not, if so ancient is cool, if not, then no.

Okay, maybe the problem is that my science suck so bad (even though I constantly have 80% science post patch. Pre-patch I could for some reason barely manage 40-50%!) that I spend too much time in early eras. I reached industrial era in between 16-1800, which only leaves me with 250 years to reach and play the modern era. This sucks.

remember to think in turns and not years ... u get so many more turns per year after 1900

personally i hate the modern era ... well exept with LWC or something ... i find the variety of the units in the ancient era much better ... the modern era only really has 2 units .. mech inf and modern tanks .... industrial has cav (mostly used in this era) rilflemen and infantry and tanks

sometimes the game feels like "sit and wait" untill u get tanks

Personally, I love the industrial period, so the amount of time spent there really doesn't bother me too much. I would appreciate some more thought being put into the modern era. Most of the games I play end while using tanks or modern armor. I have yet to get a single future tech.

the modern era needs to be improved. with the original unit stats you can just pump out modern armors and wipe out the world in one turn. theres no fun in that.

I would prefer a little more ancient era and less middle ages. I hate the middle ages...!!

I want a Stone Age, Dark Age, Renaissance and Future eras. And I want the early periods of the game to last longer. I think the industrial era is the most boring; very few city improvements and lots of blank techs.

I agree with the Industrial Era. Nothing seems to happen except massive wonder building. The ancient era is a little better than Civ2, but still needs improvement. (probably slower game years and research time. I also agree that there should be a stone age. (The Egyptians started in the late stone age, I think), and some expansionist civs (or civs that have high population, like China) could start with 2 settlers. (granted, the Zulus are Militaristic Expasionists, so that might be a problem. ) The modern era's ok, since there's also paratroopers (for quickly blitzing an enemy), marines (for digging out those civs who built on a one tile island), nukes (ICBM's are a perfect addition, but deadly - and a little one sided. You could win in one turn with those things! provided you're the most advanced and did some seriou nuke rushing).

The warships (frigates and up) seem to miss their targets quite often, and with modern battleships and other units, you should be able to select the target you want to destroy in a city.

As far as I can tell, by the time you get to the modern age the game is in its final stages. But maybe that's just because I haven't played enough games.

The modern age makes several victory conditions quickly available:
- UN for diplomatic, which could happen at any time a vote goes well.
- Apollo program for space victory -- basically if you're even or lagging in tech, it's a race to finish the spaceship. If you're ahead, you can take your time.
- Cultural, since by the time you make it to modern you're approaching these thresholds.

Conquering or dominating is usually less of an option at this point because you've established an uneasy balance to make it this far. If either actually is an option, it's probably because you're so far ahead already that it's just a matter of sweeping up the pieces of the remaining civilizations.
