If the game was working properly before, but you've recently modified the program or your computer's hardware, there could be an incompatibility with the XML stored in the cache. Press and hold the SHIFT key when the loading screen comes up. Don't let up until after it has passed the XML cache portion of loading. This will prevent it from loading XML from cache (i.e. clears the cache).
