Having been a fan of Civilization I and II, and Sim City (original and 2000), I have finally upgraded my computer so that it is half decent.

So Civ III and Sim City 4 will be purchased shortly.

I am after any recommendations of similar games, based on myself liking those.

I never really could get into Star Craft and Red Alert.

Main ones I have been looking at is the Age of Empires / Mythology etc; but concerned they are more like Red Alert than say Civilization.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks :king:

Age of Empires and Age of Empires 2 - and Age of Mythology are WAY better than Red Alert and Starcraft (both good games in my opinion) they are left in the shade.
AoE and AoE2 r very much like it with a Civvy kind of feel - well worth buying if you can get them considering now both cames come really cheap.
AoM is different. It seems to have followed the same road as Warcraft 3 and gone almost RPG. But in my opinion that makes it well better. :)

I would recommend the MOO series (all three of them), they are worth a look.
Gal Civ is worth the money id say.

I have one thing to say about Sim City 3 - it sucks dont buy it. Sim City 4 well i dont know about, i have a friend who says it is really good and another one who says it sucks so your on your own with that one.

Lastly I would say go by Rise of Nations and the Total War series. Both r supposedly really good games, and from what of seen from the little demos i played of them, they were great.

I consider Rise of Nations to be an excellent combination of civ and the aoe games.

And if you're after city builders, you could try Caesar 3, or any of the other ones made by Impressions, theres a few others. I've only played caesar and pharoah, but I'm guessing they're all pretty similar.

S M's Alpha Centauri. Just ask Lefty how nice that game is.

Takes a while to learn properly, but it is worth the effort.

and - for a real classic: S M's Colonization ;)

Yeh all three. I have MOO3 but not one and two and I like MOO3 - its a game that requires a lot of patience and micromanagement but worth it if uve got the patience to deal with it.
And apparently MOO1 and MOO2 are the similar more simplistic faster paced games than MOO3 and so also worth the effort of buying.

I see you like City building games(sim city) try out the Caesar series, Caesar II is my fav(although i can't play it anymore :( ) Caesar III is damn good also

I wouldn't advise getting Age of Empires. The agricultural side of the game is quite good, and I enjoy it. But the battles... they're just boring. The AI is way too predictable, since it's a war game, that's not a good thing. Don't buy it.

Starcraft ! The one and only Perfect (not the brat) game out there...

Must you be so blind as to limit your choices only to PC? The best turn-based strategy game in the world is Advance Wars for the Gameboy Advance, and, as I love to constantly repeat, it makes Civ look like crap! :p

And the GBA has FFTA and Fire Emblem, both Turn-based Strategy RPGs that ALSO make Civ look like crap! ;)

After reading online sources for hours I have learned a great deal about how to play it as a macromanagement game instead of a micromanagement game with micromanagement only becoming truely available when they patched the game. BTW, I hated MOO3 when it first came out but like it a lot currently.

Warcraft III, the online play is great. Even the single player is ok. With all the differnt maps peopele there is never a shortage or games and never gets boring like games *sneeze* MOO3
