BEIJING: A gas blow-out in southwest China turned an area of 25 square km into a death zone, killing nearly 200 people in their sleep or outside their homes, a government official and state media said today.

"Sulphurated hydrogen" as they refer to it is Hydrogen Sulphide, or H2S. Commonly known as 'rotten egg gas'. At low concentrations, it causes nausea, but at higher concentrations it destroys your ability to smell it - these people affected probably didn't even smell it coming. It only take a few hundred PPM to be fatal.:(

That's horrible news.
120,000 died in work related accidents? That's worse than horrible.

No need to try to compare events and statistics. Take it for the tragedy it is. These people likely had no damn clue. They probably just smelled something horrible for a time, but then, as the chemical does, they didn't smell it anymore and didn't think about it. Then they're dead...

This has been on TV the whole day, *long sigh* Such tragic things happens during the Christmas holidays and the New Year seasons. tsk tsk tsk

Everything in China happends at a far greater scale that it's for an outsider to understand.

Yeah, but even more so in India. Like when they report that a bus crashed somewhere and around 800 people died:confused: Speaking of India, they lost alot more people in that Union Carbide chemical release in Bhopal. Thousands died and tens of thousands were left with lingering health effects. By that standard, China got off easy this time.

They still haven't got the guy that did Bhopal - I mean, more accurately, was responsible through his negligence for Bhopal. I thought India was trying to extradite him out of somewhere?

I'm sorry if I sound a bit crass, but when I saw the thread title, the first thought in my mind was "Oh my, that must have been a powerful fart!"

That is not funny, Shiplord

Boo that was stupid ****lordavatar what are you nine or something?

Well, I guess we are not so avant-guardistic as we might want. Who knows, maybe the Holocause will become a crack-joke some time :crazyeye:

Thats too brutal to be a joke.

Is it because it's too close to home? Although I'm sure that is not your reason, it does seem like what ShiplordAtvar is trying to portray. Funny how the same people who are complaining about how the rest of the world is no longer completely focused on 9/11 are the same people making fart jokes about other people's tragedies. A disaster is a disaster whether it happened in the US, Iraq, China, Israel, or Iran.

I agree that a disaster is a disaster no matter were it happens. I know plenty of people who made jokes in the wake of the 11 September attacks and I didnt get all bent out of shape about it.

So, 5,000 people killed by a group of bigots can be made fun of while 6,000,000 people cannot? Is there some sort of magic-number of people that have to die before it becomes unacceptable to make fun of?
