[GS] Gathering Storm General Discussion Thread

There are a few screencaps of the Commercial Hub and Campus in the other thread and neither show any changes to specialists. That's rather deflating; a reason to grow cities large enough to justify working those district buildings was something I was desperately hoping to see in this expansion.

still haven't finished watching the entire video yet. I'm guessing they are pushing back victories into the later game. As is, you can get victories far too early.

The only victory they may not be able to push back is Conquest victory. Unless they somehow make the AI awesome (unlikely). So chopping everything will still be an option for those going the conquest route because you never have to worry about any consequences for that. And of course diplomacy won't matter either.

I wonder how the Swedish media will react to this, like how the Canadian media did with Poundmaker
Probably barely at all? I don't predict this is something that'll attract more than the slightest bit of mainstream media attention, let alone controversy. Some magazine might mention it briefly in its entertainment section and that'll probably be it. Statements of Kristina being some kind of national traitor represent a fringe sentiment at best.

I am about 90% sure that a third expansion is on the table. So I am not giving up all hope yet on getting my beloved Vietnam. That leaker from before seemed to get everything right, and the possibility of us getting a third expansion was another one of their posts. While the spread of civs in this expansion isn't the best, as a stepping stone to the next expansion I think it is pretty good. My only question is what would even be left to add after this expansion beyond new civs? We don't even know everything in this expansion yet and it already filled out my whole bucket list beyond the whole: I need vietnam thing. We will just have to wait and see, but I wouldn't spell doom and gloom for more yet.

I think we need another expansion, but mostly full of new civs and leaders, with the odd new feature here and there. And some major AI tweaking that some people have been clamouring for.

I highly doubt they will react to a PC game. Certainly wouldn't if they picked Erik af Pommern for Denmark, so doubt Kristina would elicit any response either.

Right. You also have to bear in mind that the outcry re: Poundmaker was from Natives and that his descendants didn't want him misrepresented, which is fair. If I recall correctly, they were very civil/reasonable about it all.

So who wants to play the hyper real setting for disasters for their first Gathering Storm game?

For me, I want more disasters, I think I will definitely do this on my first game.

I'm rewatching the video now. It seems they mention that World Congress will be a thing even in ancient era. How would that work if you haven't discovered all the other civs yet, or possibly discovered no civs? I'm not sure I'm a big fan of World Congress this early in the game.

World Congress in the ancient era seems like a bad idea. I hope they didn't say that.

I'm an empire builder at heart, so the idea of volcanoes and hurricanes wiping out my carefully manicured empire isn't thrilling. For that reason I'll be leaving disaster settings on default (or lower, pending hands-on experience).

I would be really surprised if the world congress were available in the ancient era. The world congress is basically the UN, which was not even a concept in geopolitics until the 20th century. Plus, how could you have a world congress when you have not even met all the civs. Similar to how SMAC did it, the world congress would have to only be available when everyone has met everyone. So at a minimum, the world congress will only show up once all the civs have met each other. Also, there will probably be a world wonder you need to build to enable the world congress or at least research a civic.

So drought, hurricanes, blizzards, floods, volcanoes? What about Earthquakes, Plagues, and Forest fires?

I guess they'll have to wait until the third expansion. Althought, with all the content that GS seems to carry... more than ever I think it won't happen.

I would really love to see the satellite layer copied from Beyond Earth. With so much focus on the future I really hope for it, but I guess they would have mentioned it if so.

Or what do you guys believe? Would it be a must have mentioned-feature or a not needed to mention-feature for now?

I wonder now that England have more production to engineers and they gain more changes, it could mean that military engineers are now used for more than before.

Will they be used for building railroads maybe? I wonder

Any ideas what those different icons mean, and what the Manager-tab does?

In the site says there will be 8 new civs, 9 new leaders and 9 new UUs. So, Eleanor will have her own UU.
Eleanor..?? Eleanor of England, Queen of Castile (thanks Wiki)..?? Has she been confirmed since you mention her or just your wild guess?

Hasn't been confirmed, but was part of a leak that seems pretty credible right now.

Ok just got the news coming back from work, watched the stream, read all 22 pages here ;-)

Just WOW... Hyped is the word... pretty much everything that I felt was missing seems to be in, and more...

I don't have anything negative to say about anything I've seen or read... so far ;-)

Except the price... you guys talk about $40... that must be in the US... here in Canada, on steam, it's listed as $53.49... I mean, I KNOW I'll buy it, but still... that the price of a whole new game, not of an expansion !

Ok gonna go let all that sink in now ;-)

HALL OF FAME !!!! YEAAHHHHHH !!!!

I'm worried about how my specs will run this expansion. Should I even worry in the first place? Specs for base games carry over into expansions, I know, but...

Or maybe I'm just overthinking? :(
There's no way to know until it comes out. Early versions will probably not be fully optimized, so even someone who's played it won't be able to tell you.
