Spoiler :
The Truro Daily News

TRURO – A local gay pride group has filed a human rights complaint against the Town of Truro for its refusal to fly a gay pride flag earlier this month.

Charles Thompson said the group’s lawyer filed a complaint to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission Wednesday, although he had hoped things would’ve been resolved another way.

Ideally, Thompson had hoped they could’ve met with the town to resolve the issue, but came to realize it wouldn’t happen.

“I guess I was a little naive in thinking that,” he said.

He is even more disappointed after reading an agreement between the town and the rights commission from 2005, which encouraged respecting diversity.

“What about us? We deserve it too.”

The complaint will be reviewed by the commission within six to eight weeks and it will decide whether the complaint is valid and what should be done.

Thompson said in the past, pride groups have filed similar complaints against towns in New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia. In each case, commissions ruled against the municipalities.

They aren't being denied their rights. its just a flag... I mean, they put the banner up for them. Isnt the banner enough?

This isn't about rights anymore. It's now about power more than anything.

The town could fly nearly any darn flag it wants beside the national and provincial (and town if they have one). Petition if you want them to fly a particular one.

This agreement might make the situation dicier if it's actually enforceable.

Actually, they only fly 2 flags. The Canadian one and the Nova Scotia one

the town is right. gays can petition for it but if the town says no, then tough titties.

Just imagine the frenzy that will happen if a town decides to put up a "straight" flag...

You should simply have added this new article on the same subject to your other thread.

Does anyone here think that if a Christian group wanted them to fly a flag with crosses on it, that they would do it? If not, then you really have no grounds to demand that they fly this special interest group flag, especially since there are more Christians than gays.

Honestly.....fly it on your own lawn if you want to, but don't expect the government to give you free publicity.

Exactly. Same goes for crosses on government property, nativity scenes in town squares, 10 commandment displays in courthouses, "in God we trust" on currency, "under God" in pledges, and prayer in public schools.

I'm in the first wave of people defending queers in most situations, but there is no human rights violation here. This is just whining that makes reasonable people look bad.

Besides, it may open up a huge can of worms and make the flagpoles even more politicized than they might be right now.

Quoted for truth. Fly your own damn flag on your own property; nobody's saying you can't be gay by yourself.

No human rights violation. We have a significant nerd population here in my suburb, but do you think Del Mar or Carmel Valley is going to fly the Alliance standard? I doubt it.

best example I could come up with, as the more reasonable ones were taken. and I'm a horde-cow player myself, please don't lynch me

Can the town tell this commission to go suck eggs, or would there be repercussions to that course of action?

That's what I'd do but then it'd probably be seen as a homophobic comment.

You have the right to fly your own flag. You don't have the right to force the government to fly your flag.

This seems bizarre. There has to be more to this story that they're not saying. Or maybe people are actually that ******ed.
