GeneralMatt's Creation Thread

You have it easy, airplanes are simple, boats, a small thing can make or break it. :p

Jesus you guys fuss too much.
Well if you only want it "kinda sorta remotely in the general vacinity" of the model you want, then you can just spit them out fast and not bother with detail or getting it right.

Matt and I agree... if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right! ;)

Oh... and speaking of fussing...

Matt... this is looking FANTASTIC... I love it... only one thing to fuss about, and this is mostly just to upset DK...

The base of the cranes aren't in the right spot.

Every picture and drawing I have shows the base of the cranes firmly planted almost in-line with the aft section of the aft smokestack. See sideview here (and almost every other picture/model I posted). You've got the base of the cranes a little too far aft... move the base of the cranes forward almost (but not quite) to the aft smokestack... you can move the lifeboats up a bit too so they're more or less between the smokestacks. Keep the lifeboats the same size and relation to the cranes... they'd move-up along with the base of the cranes.

See pic for placement of cranes:

Other then the cranes I think you're doing a fantastic job Matt!

Next it's time for the guns along the hull below the main deck!

P.S.
Matt's even crazier then me on detail... I was happy with the default Battleship model in the game for the USS Iowa... but Matt insisted on making "a more accurate" USS Iowa for the game... which is why I knew he'd be a sucker to do the third USS Iowa for the game! ;)

Anyways, Cranes, deck guns and done.. Got it :p. Do you think those pipeish things aught to be added (I never have figured what they were).

Wow Matt... fantastic!!!

Haven't seen the texture yet (obviously), but the model itself may be your best yet... great work!

I'm not sure I have much else to fuss about (DK thinks I do too much of that you-know). On those pipey things? Dunno... You can try them, you can skip them... I won't fuss about them if they don't make the cut... mostly because I don't know what pipey-things do either?!?!?

I'm thinking you're pretty-near done with the model... is it time to texture already?

Yes indeed. Now that I think about it, were those pipes used for communicating between decks and such? I think I heard mention of a speaking tube or something of the sort before..

The question now...

A) Custom Animation
B) Helgoland Animation
C) Destroyer (cheap-out) Animation

Hehe... even "C" is better then nothing (I'll take it), but it would be nice to see if you could get those wing turrets to animate.

Anyways, good luck with the texturing! Can't wait to see that gaudy late 1800s white/gold paint scheme!

The crew of the Iowa says "Animate our side turrets!"

P.S.
The crew of the Iowa says "when you texture our ship, make sure the Bridge looks good!"

Just wanted to say thanks to you Matt. Your models have allowed me to fill out my navy for my own SP mod. Makes the game far more enjoyable for me having an age of steam navy. And thanks Wolfshanze for the buttons.

On a completely unrelated note, anyone know of a model that would work as a TOW infantry unit, and know where a button for it would be? I haven't been able to find one, though this request is kind of off topic.

Thanks again and I apreciate the work you do.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I have a request. There is a crudely done Ocean Liner floating around, I'm using for a transport in the WW1/WW2 era, but it's pretty crude, and isn't animated at all. Your models are always so pretty. Any chance you could do a WW1 style transport, probably in the Ocean liner style, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wolfshanze doesn't have a more aporpriate and better looking design in mind. Would be nice to fill out that era's navy with a nicely done transport ship.

Thank you Wolfshanze, that will help a lot!

Phungus@ Glad I could be of help. What about the RMS Titanic?

What about the RMS Titanic?

Didn't know it existed, wasn't in the library and it's hard to find models, difficult to set search parameters right. Checking it though, it lacks an .nif file, it's a bunch of strange file types I don't know what to do with. The read me says something about using an editor to make it work, and has a bunch of steps I'm failing to understand, so hmmm... Thread is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=119306 I'll try to make this work, though it'd be great if someone who knows what they are doing in the art file editing department could make this a straight .nif with the .kfm for animations if it doesn't use another unit's .kfm file, or if someone could explain how to do it in a way I understand I'd apreciate it. I'll go about re-reading the read me again, there has to be a way to make this work, though I'm under the impression I need some sort of art editing program I don't have, and don't know how to use to do it.

That is a Civilization 3 unit, not usable for Civ 4. ;)

What I meant was that in the future I might be able to do one for Civ 4.

Matt, no need to say, your work is great. Pardon me for saying this but WW1 and WW2 are pretty much covered. What about modern naval units?

Afterall, modern era is played for more turns in game than any other for most players.

I would like to request REbuilt of San Antonio Class LPD with the two cones missing from your previous design and perhaps a slight improvemet in unit's texture. No need to say how important a perfect looking modern transport is for realism into this blessed game.

Here is a pic, i could help with more if you would like to start upgrading it.

Thank you and keep up the good work.

Ya, I know. I found this thread right after having posted in the unit-specific thread for San Antonio. Sorry for that.

That's actually great news. Hope we see this around soon enough. I really can't wait myself. Need this so much.

It is no problem, it just made sure I saw it. :)

Anyways, no guarantees, but hopefully soon.

Wolfshanze, it may not look like there is any progress, but I am may 2/3 the way through the texture on the thing, so no worries..

That's a pretty broad assumption... in-fact, from what most people I've heard comment on the forum, they've more-or-less assured or achieved victory by the beginning of the modern era.

Is there a problem with using the highly detailed Liberty Ship model for the Transport in Civ4? That's what the Wolfshanze Mod uses.

True. Including me. I just continue the game further... so i believe many, many players. ;)

Actually it's been my experience on the forum I've heard people actually mention they almost never see late-game units because they're already done by then... I don't think your theory holds water... at least not amongst most of the folks on this forum (the vocal ones anyways... they always seem to say they're done by the modern age). Of course this doesn't mean 'all' in any way, but your assumption that most folks play late into the modern age, I think would be quite incorrect.

I tend to lose interest in games that I've already assured victory and it's no longer a challenge... I then look forward to starting a new game... so i believe many, many players. ;)

BACK ON TRACK:
So Matt... how's the texturing coming?!?!?

An off-topic, I know. I' m just saying there are enough World War I and II units. It's a matter of... ratio. I' ve played your mod, I undestand you might want more units but it's actually great as it is. I really feel like i don't have the right to complain since i've been around for too a short period of time in this forum (even though i play civ since CIV I) nor i've uploaded a mod, nor any units since i can't create one no matter how hard i try.

It's just a feeling i get. Sorry for the off-topic. I promise, i want talk about this here anymore. Just hoping some modern units will appear sortly along with the ones of WW1 and WW2 or evern earlier.
