Georgia finally engages in a war

It doesn't matter. Georgia is going to get its ass kicked and we can focus on what really matters, the Olympics. :p

No, but seriously, why is Russia engaging itself in a Georgian matter? It would be like the US sending "peacekeepers" into Chechnya because of Russian atrocities.

Into the demilitarized autonomous zone of South Ossetia after Georgia besieged and shelled the province capital and killed Russian peacekeepers there by international mandate, yes.

International mandate? Peacekeepers? You sound like Pravda.ru :)

There is a huge difference between what the Russians say and what they do. Their peacekeepers were not doing any peacekeeping, they were just protecting the separatists and allowing them to provoke the Georgians. Now this policy has backfired.

Georgians were told, simply put, to abandon parts of their country and turn them over to Russian puppet governments. I fail to see how is is not in break of everything the UN stands for. Russian action in Georgia have always been aggressive. It's sad that once again people side with the aggressor.

Russia peacekeepers in "fierce" battle: agencies
Fri Aug 8, 2008 2:39pm EDT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian peacekeepers are waging a "fierce" battle with Georgian forces in South Ossetia and have suffered 12 dead and 150 wounded, the peacekeeping forces were quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

"Now our peacekeepers are waging a fierce battle :crazyeye: with regular forces from the Georgian army in the southern region of Tskhinvali," a representative of the Russian force was quoted as saying by Interfax.

There were no details on the casualty figures.

Russia would cut air links with the ex-Soviet state from midnight on Friday, the Russian Transport Ministry said.

Saakashvili told BBC World television Russia had been massing troops on the northern border of Georgia for months.

" They have been calling it training exercises, but they have not been concealing the fact that they are training these troops for use inside Georgia," he said.

"The way the escalation went was we came first under extensive artillery barrage from the separatists ... but in the end I was told that Russian armored vehicles started to cross the Georgian border. And that was exactly the moment when I had to take this decision to fire back."

The head of Georgia's Security Council, Kakha Lomaia, said on Friday Georgia would withdraw 1,000 soldiers from Iraq to help fight off Russian forces in South Ossetia.

That would correspond with the traditional Russian way of conducting aggressions. They always start with "military exercises" near the target area. Czechoslovakia was invaded exactly the same way 40 years ago.

We know that they surrounded the city, anything beyond that is speculation or unverified claim.
BBC said they were shelling. Its okay for you to believe it.

They don't give the tiniest piece of crap about that.
Me and my friend do. This makes your argument false.

I won't comment on dubious sources badly translated by a software.
Learn Russian, is the best I can advise you.

Ok they attacked your allies. They Killed south ossetians not russians. And Your "Peacekeepers" have tanks and aircraft that are destroying air base's.
10 Russian peace keepers were killed as a result of direct fire. Get the facts (endorsed by BBC) straight.

Georgia is screwed. What chance Georgia has against the Ruskies? None. Would't surprise me if the Russians found some "evidence" that Ukraine is planning to atack and then do a tank rush. For defensive porpouses, of couse. Frankly, Russia is a tad pissed off with the EU and NATO encircling them.

I'm still thinking about my opinion...

Ok so Russia invaded Georgia.

Hahah,. Please try to look at it from both sides, its not that simple.

Russians were already there, everyone agreed for them to be there to maintain the peace between Georgians and people who do absolutely not want to be Georgians but ended up there after the collapse of the USSR.

What were they supposed to do when Georgia suddenly invaded then? Just walk away? Remember, Russian peacekeepers have been killed by the Georgian army already aswell as hundreds of civilians.

Who the hell let the Russians Peacekeep the area? Peacekeepers are supposed to be neutral. Go get some South African peacekeepers or something!

Depends, see the other thread. If the Russians stick to limited intervention, it will be a very hard for them to keep military presence in S. Ossetia. If they choose to terror bomb Georgia into submission, they won't be able to stop them.

awww, the mean evil georgian blew up one of your tanks with "peacekeepers" in them? ;)

You're foolish and ignorant about this.

One: I prove you wrong about Russian peace keepers killed. Like an honest debater you find another topic and begin to whine instead of facing the fact.

Two: There were no Russian tanks in South Ossetia prior to today OR THEY
WOULD HAVE ENGAGED IN THE FIGHTING. Russia troops had only small arms.

Any more brilliant arguments?

The UN. The UN Poland is part of. If you don't like it - get the hell out.

While the Russians are completely trustworthy, that's right :crazyeye:
Did I say that?

Don't presume something which I haven't said, but Sakashvili has very good reason to exaggerrate the circumstances (lots of dead civilians all around Georgia etc.)

joshhh said:
I would trust it more than Russia's.
I wouldn't.

Currently the situation is pretty murky and quite unclear.

We just have to see it doesn't turn SNAFU even though we're moving towards that point.

Especially since Finnish Foreign Minister is current OSCE chairman who have flown home from holiday (was it Italy?) and will try to talk with these sides.

So good luck, and good night.

Does it matter at this point why Russia was one of the choosen countries? They were there to try and maintain the peace and now they are dead. They were killed by Georgian artillery, damn Russian aggressors :p.

Bold - it was a joke.

Underline - Joke again. I didn't mean it litterally. To bad you couldn't see it. (with the awww and the "mean evil georgian").
