I was in Köln only a week ago with my girlfriend:/
Anyone from Germany who has seen the building today or who knows somebody living close by?

They say the literary estate of Heinrich Böll is lost. The archive only bought it less than three weeks ago. :(

 That...that's terrible! (There's a horrible pun here about The Lost Honor of Katherina Blum but I can't make it.) Life sucks.

On the right side for more links to the story.

But seriously, this sucks. Hope they can recover the documents. :(
Although this raises the question, will people possibly loot the site?

German only. Apparently, two weeks ago cracks were noticed on the building, but deemed 'harmless'.

Also, subway construction in Cologne lead to the tilting of a church belltower, which had to be striaghtened for 1 million Euros.

    even worse:

Translation (errors mine): After the collapse of the historic archive of the city of Cologne, the long-term head of department Eberhard Illner raises grave accusations against the authorities. The collapse of the building was a predicatable catastrophe, Illner told Deutschlandradio Kultur (a radio program - ed.). Prior to it, there were clear warning signs, he said. Personally, he noted subsidence cracks in the building's basement, and informed the authorites about them.

I wonder how Jim Oberstar will justify a tax hike with this.
