Because they're so aggressive, they always seem to be waiting until they can backstab you. It's easier to establish an alliance with a country like France or China.

I absolutely agree. I never make alliances with these guys unless it's to make sure they don't attack me. They are usually at war with somebody on my games and so I don't want to get dragged into a pointless conflict because they got attacked, especially as I know they will turn on me at the first opportunity. To be fair though, Bismarck is fairly up front with his ideas. He tells you that he has plans for world domination when you first meet him and after that he tends to be cautious or annoyed with you for no apparent reason other than your Civ's existance irks him.
The Zulus are bad aswell, as are the Aztecs, but Shaka is fairly honest with his opinion too ("I will refrain from scouring the world of your filth if you give me Iron-working" etc...) I really enjoy punishing those Civs that talked to me in this way.
Any ideas why, upon first meeting Shaka, the sub-heading says he is polite, when he still gives you the spiel about ridding you from the world? My momma always said to talk proper to folks and that courtesy costs nothing.

To explain, Moff:

"Man bites dog" is news.

"Dog bites man" is not.

"Bablyon and France are difficult allies" is news.

"Germany and Japan are difficult allies" is not.

I wonder if Germany and Japan ever ally with each other (not in real life). They don't seem to. I would think the aggressive civs would ally with each other to attack the more peaceful ones like India.

I've had one game where I thought India behaved really peacefully and I was impressed with the characterisation of Ghandi. Since then however, if India have been in close proximity to my Civ they have been warmongering dogs! It caught me off guard because I thought I could leave my borders unprotected when next to them.
This shows that even the most peaceful Civs will take advantage of a stupid or laxadasical human opponent. Good skills though I say.

Yes, I've seen India do that, too, but I don't see why Germany and Japan won't ally with each other more often if they're always acting so aggressively.

Well I would say that some ( like Germany and The Aztecks ) are very aggressive civs, but manly if your are underdogs to them. Are your civ supporior the will often have some respect for you.

India is wierd! Most often they are extremly peacefull, but when they are strong Gandhi gets itchy trigger fingers to! ;)

I have already mentioned it in some of my other posts, but I had a game where only india and france attacked me the whole game. (zulu, japanese, romans were amongst the other civs who didn't declare war on me).
Though I agree, the germans always try to pick up a fight at one point or another, even when they are completely outgunned.

they are wery good allies then they are on the different continent, the one with your enemy :mwaha:

I'm a little surprised at all the whinging about India here. India has in modern times proven to be one of the most aggressive players in the foreign policy scene. They've had several wars with Pakistan, a couple of border wars with China, played host to the exiled Dalai Lama (and by doing so encouraged resistance in Tibet) and then "assisted" and more or less occupied parts of Sri Lanka.

I always thought the "stop and go, wait then fight" representation of India was fairly accurate. Ghandi was, after all, a pacifist leader of the war for independence; since him, India's leaders have been militarists by comparison.

Since it gels well with my playing style, it's also why I love to crank the sitar CD in the background and play India more than any other civ in the game.

I never play against the Germans or Japs not because they are so extremely aggressive but because for no reason they will go from Gracious to starting a war and invading in just one turn. Even Hitler and Hirohito didn't do that going from perhaps Cautious to war against the Soviets and U.S. in 1941. Those game civ leaders are too crazy for me.
