 That looks pretty cool! One advice: don't use mijnheer, it's a word that died in the 60'ies, and if you use it, don't forget the 'h'. Meneer would be better. ;)

Oops! I thought of the spelling of the 'mijn' part, but followed it with the spoken sound of 'meneer'.

If someone else wants to post question(s), please feel free. I would like to have a cumulative quiz on German history.

    Any takers?

Helaas niet, maar ik snapte er een heleboel van toen ik een week in West Vlaanderen rondreisde...

    Back on topic:
Of the 35,000 Germans who manned submarines, how many survived the war?

I am assuming you mean WW2 (yes, I know it's a silly question).

On a wild guess, less than 35000?

I think maybe even less than 1000. If I remember correctly, towards the end of the war, the U-boats were grounded cos lack of fuel and spares or something and the submariners were redeployed as infantry to fight in defense of Germany against encroaching Allied forces fr the east and west.

SKM, excellent point. I couldn't answer my own question with the redeployment on land taken into account... :o

Ahem, maybe I should restate for clarity:
Of the 35,000 Germans who manned subs (in WW2, of course), how many went down with the ship?

Hmmmm. My grandfather survived. That's one at least.

Okay, nobody cares, but here are the answers:

    Oostzee is the Baltic Sea
28,000 of the 35,000 (80% ) German mariniers went down with the sub in WW2. Sort of a death sentence, getting assigned to one...

Not that I don't care but seriously, I don't have the slightest idea. ;) I'll ask the next question, thanks.

Which Germanic tribe invaded North Africa (eventually) at around the time of the fall of the Roman Empire?

And since this is a cumulative quiz, you can surf the web or get a book for an answer. ;) Shld be very easy.
