Has anyone gotten the game to start by simply double-clicking a shortcut on the Windows desktop? For me, double-clicking the Civ V icon on my desktop brings up a screen where I have to select either DirectX 9 or DirectX 10/11. I will always select the same thing -- DirectX 10/11. Why do I have to choose every time?

I created the shortcut by right-clicking the DirectX selection window, and asking it to create a shortcut for DirectX 10/11.

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Yeah, not sure why clicking a specific DX9 or DX10/11 link will cause you to have to re-select the DX version. Perhaps the links aren't creating the correct flag for DX version?

Well, I don't think that there are any flags involved. There are two totally separate executables, CivilizationV_DX11.exe and CivilizationV.exe. Seems to me that there should be a launcher that chooses one of those, but if you run those directly you have made your choice of what you want already.

Yeah, upon further inspection there are three apps. One for a launcher, one for Dx9, and one for Dx10. Opening the launcher forces you to choose just as if you launched one of the apps directly.

Perhaps report it as a bug on the 2kforums?

I've never used steam before. How to I even get an icon on the desktop? I always have to go through steam to play.

You can hunt down the actual executables, which are in Steam\steamapps\common\specificgame and make a link. Or in Civ 5's case you can right click when you see the choice of which version to play and there is a choice there to make a link on the desktop.
