After reading these forums I have started using one of my GGs for the medic III promotion on a horse unit (current knight). This helps alot with keeping the war machine going as well getting a well promoted unit to qualify for West Point.

But after getting the three medics, looks like I can get 1 more (I am playing charismatic Churchhill). Do I take march so I can heal while moving or is that overkill and wasteful. Alternateively I could take the 100% XP upgrade but I do not plan to be fighting much with this unit.

March is wasteful. You don't want your Medic III to be fighting at all (for this reason I often prefer an explorer or a chariot which I'll never upgrade, to keep it from being chosen as a defender), so it'll never need to heal. I usually choose +1 movement (Morale, I think?) or Sentry.

+1 move ftw. alternatively, if you're careful you can go with leadership and wrack up some more promos so he becomes a good combatant as well. the free upgrades are too good to ignore sometimes...

With a Charismatic leader, it's nifty to take your first city defender, the lowly Warrior, attach a GG to him and give the +1 move. It's not 3, sure, but it's still fun to upgrade him on your last turn, for free, into a Mech.inf <3

For a MASH general (what I call 'em) I use the +100% xp +2 moves and then use him against 99%+ targets since he's in the invasion stack anyway.

go get woody 1 2 and 3 :D. Though this promo isn't available to mounted units anyways...

What are all the units that can get Woodsman III + Medic III(assuming you have a GG available)?

from the top of my head? melee and gunpowder units. Jaguar Aztec UU is the best unit for this because they start with Woodsman 1 and with an Aggressive leader you also get combat 1. you only need another 5 promotions to get a Medic & Woodsman 3 unit. Which is 26XP. With Mixed leaders Agg/cha of Aztecs the Jag only need 20XP.

I always considered using GGs in the battlefield as sort of gamboling.

I just love it when I kill those from the AI.

From another point of view, I awlways use my attached GG as a combat unit. The first promo he gets is +100% xp. From there it's the medic promos (including march, so he's always ready to attack). I've had GG's reach 250+ xp. Every game I have a GG with over 100 xp.

I'm a bit of a noob, but I always take leadership immediately with any great general unit. If I'm very careful (99.9%+) I can use it to earn a lot more promotions quickly.

Yep. The tricky part isn't just picking the battles to ensure survival, but also to accompany him with other defensive units to survive the counterattack.

Most of my "offensive" GG units die by counterattack than by my over-aggressiveness.

That's exactly why I seetle all my GG's unless I use the Medic III promotion, need the high level for West Point, or have a critical battle/invasion where I really need to will decisively and quickly. I ran My Medic III horse unit all over the world with Churchhill.

Haven't done it yet, but I did read a post about making a Catapult your MedIII unit... the only reason was that it would be able to knock down some City Def at least prior to the city attack and wouldn't be totally useless like an Explorer or a Chariot. Other than the new Flanking that Most the Mounted Units get, I don't see a down side to this.

I've been making my early city-protector warriors my GG units. Free upgrades (Macemen/Rifle/Infantry) with promotions means instant mega-unit. Always, always, leadership, and the +1 move 1, then specialize from there. If you have a Woodsman III from exploring, thats a good candidate for Medic III eventually. With Imperialism, I've had 4-5 of these super-infantry running around by tank time, probably could get more.

Catapults are built to be eaten. After they knock down the city walls I use them next turn to collateral damage the defenders so my normal troops can take them out with minimal losses.

My medical ground unit is usually the one escorting the seige weapons. He heals up the surviving seige units and any attackers who need it.

the best GG i had was a level 26 or so airship. that basically equaled 4 dead units a turn, it was amazing.

@ weregamer

I think that MrFelony meant gunship with Blitz not airship

It seems to me that rather than getting a medic 3 unit or a unit for West Point, settling or military academy would almost always be better than making a super unit. MA means more units, Settling is a lot more exp in the long run.

The main reason I don't think a super offensive unit is all that great is that you are going to protect it and only use it for very high percentage battles. In that case, a unit of the same type with 2 or 3 promotions will still have a pretty high chance of winning the same battle.

One thing I think might be pretty useful is using a general or 2 to get some highly promoted machine guns to protect a beachhead for a naval invasion force, or to be the primary defender after taking an initial city amphibiously on another continent. An uber-defense unit or 2 here could potentially save dozens of units. If you are protective, Upgrading a Drill3 grenadier into a CG3 drill4 machine gun should hold off quite a few troops.
