I seem to have a problem. I am unable to download .gif image files to my hard drive. I used to be able to, but now when I do all I get is a little dot as an image. I have been trying from a website where people post pictures, but I think downloading is allowed and it works for .bmp and .jpg. Any ideas as to what is up? Do I need a program?

Try clearing your cache and restarting your browser.

Pardon the ignorance, but how do I clear my cache? It's not the same thing as internet history, is it?

Also, whenever I go to save the file, it says that the filename is 'spaceball', regardless of what it really is.

    No, it's not.

Assuming you're using IE, click on Tools, and Internet Options. Make sure you're on the 'General' tab, and click 'Delete Files'. This will clear the cache.

That didn't work. It could be the website - it's Flickr.com. Maybe there is a rule against downloading people's pics, but I haven't seen one. Maybe the specific people can prohibit it for their pictures. If it's not that, I don't know what it could be.

Well, the simple answer is can you d/l gif's from somewhere else? If so, then I'd say it's the website. If not, it's probably your browser. You could try an alternate browser, or if possible try and d/l it from a different puter.

Sure, where can I find some .gifs? Most sites use .jpg, or more rarely .bmp or .png.

Edit: I think it might be the site. I just downloaded a .gif from another site a few days ago. But then, I can download .jpgs from this site just fine.

It is the website, on some photos at flickr they hide the real image behind a transparent gif file. When you right click on it and pick "save as" you are only getting the gif file and not the pic you want.

They dont do it too all the pics, I think it is an option that each user can pick.

What happens when you take a screenshot of it? Does that work?

You could probably just view the source of the page. My guess is they just use the 'real' image as the background-image of a DIV, and then have an <IMG> tag inside of it, so you as you said you save the transparent gif.

Yeah, you can view the source code and get the image that way. A screenie would probably work too.

I had forgotten my avvie was a .gif....

Right click on the page, and select 'View Source'. You'll see the HTML coding for the page.

    On the clipboard. ;)

("Print Screen" just saves the image to the clipboard. You have to open an image editing program (MSPaint, Photshop, etc.) and paste the image to actually see it.)
