Does gifting of a resource, (cow, dye, etc) make any difference in the AI's attitude?
I haven't noticed any improvement and it certainly doesn't provide anything like "You paid me tribute".
Thanks for any insight.

after so many turns i think it starts to affect they're attitude. "We appreciate the years you supplied us with resources". Pretty sure its like a +1 or +2 bonus.

There's no immediate benefit from gifting a resource to the AI. However, if I understand correctly, gifting resources speeds up the resource trade diplo bonus, which can be good for diplo games.

I will some times gift a resource very early game if I don't need it or have extra just to get the ball rolling on the diplo. Then cancel later after Currency to get gold.

the "tribute" bonus only happens if an AI actually demands it.

Sometimes I'll gift an AI, say spice, so he won't trade his oil to a 3rd civ for spice.

Gifting AI something you don't need is a good strategy. You start accumulating "We appreciate the years you supplied us with resources" diplo bonus and you capture that trade slot before AI trade it from someone else. Don't wait for Currency first, you can usually renegotiate trade agreement and get some gold or resource for it.

Gifting happiness resources on the higher levels works fine since the AI rarely struggles with happiness early on anyways because of their bonuses. As stated, you start getting the +relationship bonus with that civ, AND -- best of all -- some arrogant, bellicose, unfriendly AI (cough cough Monty/Shaka/Ragnar et al) can't demand that resource from you, and you won't have to suffer the -diplo for telling them to go have intercourse with themselves. :D
