Hi, I have looked in the forums for this info, but did not find. I am playing a game in wich I'm trying to win by Apostolic Palace, but Tokugawa doesn't have a city with my religion and is running the theocracy civic , therefore I can't do a diplomatic victory election. It's a pain in the ass to sign open borders with him to gift him a missionary, wich would solve the theocracy problem. So I was wondering: if I gift him a Caravel, wich can go in his territory even without open borders, with a missionary inside, will he get it?

Thanks!

You know what? I really don't know! And I never even considered this myself, but now I want to know.

Try testing it. Go into WB and set up the situation. Can Missionaries enter foreign territory without open borders? If not, I believe the caravel might have problems going into his cultural space.

I remember trying something like this and indeed, I could not get a Caravel loaded with a Missionary past closed borders. I have successfully delivered a Great Merchant that way, but not a missionary. I admit I hadn't thought of giving away the whole Caravel, and that is creative, but it still doesn't work. Darn.

Well, I ran a simple test in the world builder (WB) and it seems to work. I have taken some screenshots. I am not used to the WB, so I don't know if it is a valid test, someone with more experience can comment. Here is the step-by-step of the test:

First I loaded a random game, I had Isabella as a non-open borders neighbor. I opened the WB and added, in my territoty, a caravel in the sea and a missionary in a one plot island, then closed the WB. I loaded the missionary in the caravel, moved it to her territory and gifted the caravel. The caravel went under her flag, and the 2 dots indicating the quantity of units became 1, wich is normal since in this version we are not able to see enemy units in a ship. I then opened the WB again to check, and to my amazement, the two dots were back, I selected the edit unit option of the WB, and right-clicked the plot with the caravel and the pop up menu listed a caravel and a missionary. :)

I think you need to carry through your test a few turns and see what the AI does with the missionary.

Interesting. I could swear I tried this trick and it didn't work. Maybe there was a patch change since then or else I was doing something wrong or else I was hallucinating. However, I concede to the evidence of the test. I will try to remember to try it again.

so what happen if you gift a unit that is inside the transport?

Reminds me of one of the early SGOTMs. We were trying to engineer a permanent alliance, and needed for some reason I don't remember to adjust our power ratings down and one of the AI's up. So I came up with the idea of gifting the AI the Units aboard our ships, but not gifting the ships. Then, after the other AI signed the PA and it was time to backstab the AI we were gifting units to, we would just disband the ships and send the AI units to the bottom. Ultimately we decided it was too gamey for a competition, but it would have worked well.
