The last game I played, I got this from Alexander:

It happened to me once before--Huayna Cuypac (sp?), of all people!--gave me Astronomy for free. Wish I had a screenshot.

Has this ever happened to you?

P.S. My game score sucks because I was going for a cultural victory (and eventually won it).

Yup, already happened to me. AI does that sometimes when they consider us backwards ... it happens a lot on 100% cultural victories

I've never had this happen Then again I never go for culture victory.

I've only ever seen the AI do that on team games.

My first attempts at deity were in a culture HoF gauntlet, I used to get gifts all the time. The best was when Mansa popped up to say "The Malinese people are feeling very generous today, Paradigm Shifter" and gifted me calendar on the very turn I had 2 workers arrive at a dye tile, I would have kicked myself if that hadn't happened because I wouldn't have been able to build a plantation there otherwise
