in my last game i got the "you are the first to circumnavigate the world" message after all the other contionets civs had already contacted me...
strange that i hadnt even built a ship by that time :crazyeye: (except for one work boat, which immediately started fishing)
is this broken???

You probably traded maps! :)

You don't actually need to do the exploring yourself, just be the first one to have a circumnavigated world map.

Ya - I thought you had to go around the world with a boat for this, but then I had the same thing happen in my last game.

I really think that it should be actually going around the world, though. Why should someone who's just good at trading maps get that benefit?

Originally I used to ignore this and not bother with an early navy. But when you get to the right general tech level, its a good idea to switch focus to the prereqs for a caravel for a little while, and make at least two to send straight out in each direction. When they meet up, you'll have a permanent naval advantage. Then you can set them on autoexplore and forget about them until much later, but they'll eventually give you a pretty decent map of the world without much effort or risk.

To get the +1 naval movement bonus you must be the first civ to have had every line of longitude (column on the grid) occupied by a naval unit. As I read elsewhere, this means the most efficient way to get the bonus is to build two Caravels and send them in opposite directions. They do not have to meet on the same tile, merely on the same line of longitude.

Or revealed by map trading, as pointed out.

Sometimes I just send on 1 ship for the sole purpose of getting that advantage.
I hope the AI will eventually try for it as aggressively as me.
Especially on water maps.

I do think it should be changed so you can't trade maps to aquire it and it has to be an actual path and not just 1 tile in every column.

I've modded my naval units to all have double movement points, so my Caravels go 6. Even then, the extra movmenet point comes in handy!

Naval movement in vanilla is a joke. Never in the history of humanity was travelling on land as quick or even quicker than travelling by sea. And on large or huge maps... Don't get me started! :p

Clearly the movent of ships is shaped to prevent over expansion and to keep the civs separated for some time. I like early movement restrictions. And the later combustion ships do move pretty well. Perhaps something where within your own cultural borders - or ones that you have open borders with, you can get an extra movement point would be better.

You'd think that, but it works beautifully. Ocean squares and the occational closed rival border pretty much ensures you won't get to meet anyone you wouldn't meet using a scout in the early game.

That said, I get absolutely fumy at the slow pace of vanilla ships -- it's like sailing through syrup. The seas have always connected lands, not divided them. Landcrabs often fail to realise this :p

Ditto for me exactly! I always go for that 1 extra move bonus and then send the out to explore the rest of the world.

I can drive my car faster than a boat moves.

And your car was invented when?

In Civ terms, it's OK that land movement gets quicker than sea movement with railroad.

(Oh, and my question was rhetorical; the car was invented in 1886 in Germany :) )
