It seems like every third one is 'DOA' or 'died after three months' or 'wouldn't run this software or that hardware'.

MSI, Gigabyte, Asus.... doesn't matter - apparently they're all shipping dead boards.

Not. Good.

The reviews are definitely worse than in past years.
The most up to date info I can find is from this French hardware site on September 11th, 2015.

Motherboards

1.89% ASUS (against 2.43%)
2.05% Gigabyte (against 2.96%)
2.08% ASRock (against 2.61%)
2.55% MSI (against 2.82 %)

Return rates are down overall, Gigabyte taking advantage to move from fourth to second place.
ASUS for its part remains in first position.

Among the models sold in more than 100 units (those sold less than 200 units as a reminder in italics), here those posting rates above 5%:
10.91% ASRock H87M
8.03% ASUS Maximus VII FORMULA
7.14% Gigabyte GA-Z97N-Gaming 5
6.06% Gaming MSI X99S 7
5.18% 970 MSI Gaming

Ranked by chipset, the return rate for breakdown is as follows:
3.84% X99
2.63% Z87 / Z97
1.84% H87 / H97
1.70% B85
1.28% H81
4.58% 990
4.00% 970
1.64% A88X
1.28% A78
1.49% A58 / A55

As usual, return rates are higher on the most high-end chipsets, which are generally associated with motherboards that highlight overclocking and additional features, two factors increasing the risk of failure.

Here are the rates achieved by manufacturers only on Z97 and Z87:
ASUS 2.12%
ASRock 2.18%
MSI 3.14%
Gigabyte 3.27%
ASUS retains top spot but Gigabyte returns last.

In detail these are the return rates for motherboards Z97 / Z87 (more than 100 sales, italics between 100 and 200 sales):
8.03% ASUS Maximus VII FORMULA
7.14% Gigabyte GA-Z97N-Gaming 5
4.96% MSI Z97-G45 Gaming
4.42% MSI Z97-G43
4.35% MSI Z97 Gaming
4.27% ASUS Z87-PRO (V Edition)
4.02% Gigabyte Z97-D3H
3.93% MSI Z87-G43
3.88% MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
3.57% ASUS Z87-A
3.26% MSI Z97 Gaming 5
2.59% ASUS Z97I-PLUS
2.36 MSI Z97 PC MATE%
2.20% ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
1.96% ASUS Z97-Pro
1.94% Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3
1.84% ASUS Z97-A
1.74% MSI Z97 Gaming 3
1.43% ASUS Z97-K
1.23% ASUS Maximus VII Hero
0.61% ASUS Z97 Pro Gamer

And here's what it is for X99:
6.06% MSI X99S Gaming
3.08% ASUS X99-Deluxe
2.50% Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4
2.31% ASUS Rampage V Extreme
2.21% ASUS X99-A

I think Google translated that right? :hmm:
Anyway, failure rates are down in late 2015 compared to 2014, at least for French customers.

I wish it was updated to include the new Z170 boards.

Mobos and PSUs are by far the most likely component to fail first in most builds, so it is unsurprising that they have the highest number of complaints.
