Is this a special map, or did a random start generate all this grassland and river?

It looks like there should be a good city location very near to the start position, though the best idea is probably to wander around a bit to find huts and specials in order to determine the resource seed and if there are any hidden specials.

Since this game is at King, the AI won't be growing as quickly, making trade less profitable. Another thing to consider is that, with less AI activity and a lower barbarian level, if the city is built inland it will be harder to bribe a boat to get off the island.

Starting with only 1 settler will also be a bit of a hindrance. I'll probably wait for republic before building one, however.

It's a random map. I was also surprised with this starting location. Perhaps because we're playing white we have such a nice starting location.

Map analysis for OCC is crucial and this one is a tough challenge due to lack of any visible specials or huts. Almost certainly the seed cannot be fully determined based on what is visible and one needs to play the game. Fortunately, because of the river it should not take too many turns to figure out the seed.

Founding your only city inland is a great risk. Unless the map is known, I would not recommend it.

Is this game being scored according to the GOTM score formula, or by some other method (such as end date or end turn)? If it is scored according to GOTM formula, it might create an interesting area of spaceship study.

Also, is it permissible to win by conquest (provided, of course, that cities are never captured)?

Good point. Typical space ship for OCC is 15s3c1m. I have literally played dozens of OCCs and I have built a larger space ship only once. Given the low Civ2 score of a typical OCC game (in 300s), adding another set of modules which increases your score by 100 has a significant impact. The big challenge in OCC is to keep the rivals from building a faster space ship that beats yours or attacking your single city with a large force. Since this is a King level game, that challenge will not be as tough as it could be.

Will be interesting to find out which spaceship will give the highest GOTM score. But I think I won't decide before I start building my spaceship. When starting it it's a lot easier to calculate the end score of different spaceships.

On the other hand you need enough freights for cheap RB the bigger spaceship parts....So perhaps I should do some calculations before the start.

The more I think about this game, the more I wish I could play this game three times. Playing for the green star through conquest looks interesting, but so do playing for the gold star via spaceship (though I suspect that a "conquest victory" would likely get the gold anyway) and playing for the blue star. The thing is that they will each require very different strategies, I think.

I think I'll leave speed play to those who have played more OCC than I have, and try for the blue star.

I finally got around to doing this. As I speculated correctly earlier, there is not much that can be gained given all the grass and no visible huts or specials. 26 out of the possible 64 resource seeds are a possibility here. I am going to get on the river and reanalyze every turn as I reveal part of the map. Since anything after the first move is considered spoiler I will not be posting my findings here.

Hi guys, Im new here, tho I've been playing civ2 for about 10 years I guess so I aint a noob. Tried a few OCC games recently they were fun so Im keen to compare results to see how well Im playing. One question tho- If you stumble on an advanced tribe, do you build a settler and starve the city out? Or should i just reload a saved game?

Also wish Id read your posts a bit first- I built inland before I read your guys arguments against. Also, you cant build offshore platform without coast access can you? Dam... I got a good spot tho :)

Good gaming!
Thanks!

Welcome notes. Wish you a good game on your first GOTM.

You are right in that you cannot build an offshore platform, nor Harbor, without coastal access. While those matter, what matters most is that you cannot build a boat and without one you can only deliver to rivals who share your continent. If there are none on your continent, you will be in big trouble as trade is a big part of OCC. Even when there are rivals on your homeland, it is nice to deliver offshore for larger bonuses. In games with barbarian setting above the minimal "huts only", it maybe possible to bribe a barbarian boat. But since only empty boats can be bribed, the opportunity for something like this is rare indeed.

I was shocked to see I had claimed the gold, blue, green and red.

I would like to thank the academy, all my friends, .... wait, there was only one other submission?

Then I would like to thank Ali for taking it easy on me. I thought there would be more submissions.
