Hi all.

“Welcome to the Grand Hall of GOTM” said the sign, as the newcomer and his advisors approached up the long path through the forest (101, 35) 2. He'd come a long way, it had been an enjoyable and at many times intense journey lasting over a decade. Exceptionally unfriendly terrain, nuclear war, global warming, warfare by espionage, desperate invasions, invented units, a revised technology tree, changed paradigms – it had been the most wide-ranging experience and the game kept up all the time. Challenges and problems had been presented but this was something beyond any of them, something more public, more complex, and because of all the tales, awesome and daunting. As the newcomer approached the doorman seemed momentarily to take the shape of a sandal-clad foot warrior before he was seen to be sitting on an armored horse. “Ah, that'll be IRB” the newcomer thought to himself. “And how do they manage to pay for guards only when needed?”

The doorman and the newcomer exchanged greetings. The doorman could see a nervousness in the visitor but he assured that “them in the Hall” were good sorts, quite friendly albeit a bit abrupt from time to time. He did warn the GOTM ethos wasn't for everyone though, a certain “compulsive perfectionism” was perhaps the right word to describe what was needed. He joked that although they talk about managing real time, hardly one amongst them will rush their play even if it's the difference between finishing and not.

The door was swung open and the newcomer stood on the threshold and looked round the large hall. It was lit by many torches. A group of people at a table turned and greeted him. Portraits adorned the walls. He could read the legendary names on some of them: TimTheEnchanter, Starlifter, ScouseGit, a particularly intricate picture of Samson, and the largest of all, Oedo. The rich leather decorated chairs used by the Duke and Magic were empty, but the start description for GOTM 119 had been left on the table. Someone from the group clustered by the table spoke. “The elite council has retired into private session at the moment, all six of them, and it may be some time before they're done, but you'll meet them later. Why don't you have a look at Empress Isabella's problem and come over and have a chat?”

“Empress...are there some girls here?” he asked. Without waiting for an answer, for he guessed what it would be, he went over to look at the new game. His advisors took off their cloaks and struck their familiar poses: five figures who had shared his journey and always been ready with an opinion. The newcomer thought back to past council meetings with a smile. The best times were when their familiar alignment shifted because of circumstances. He liked the familiar faces but he had the feeling they may not be much use now he was here. The sole advisor whose views were likely to fit was the one with the squeaky voice who liked so much to be number one.

He studied the start position for some time, sent his advisors to sleep, and then went over to the group. “Well, what do you think, and what have you decided about the usual questions” said a genial dark fellow in comfortable jeans and an emblazoned T-shirt who got up to shake hands. The friendly straight-to-the-point style reminded him of that long ago visit to the Science University.

He went straight to it therefore (the comments seem very unlikely to make a difference to experienced GOTM people but let's put them behind a button) :
Spoiler :

“It's a large map, twice as big as I'm used to, making for a potentially too long real-time game. But, we seem amazingly well-placed for trade specials and you have access to the ocean, so I suspect several of the eminences will complete a one city challenge. For me, with very limited experience trying to manage other civs, (and the three I can see already via the top five cities aren't likely to be a set of pussycats), that would be too ambitious. Similarly I've never done “early conquest” and this doesn't seem the time to try, with a large map and restarts on. So I must admit I am a bit worried how long this is going to take, particularly in the later turns if it comes to a big war, and particularly if I use overlapping cities to speed early development, and carry out significant managed trade as we always seem to here.

As to the start I have confused myself somewhat by black clicking. I haven't ever done this before but I guessed I better had to try and avoid acute embarrassment from an avoidable blunder. There is a vast majority of landmass/ocean '1' so maybe there just is a lot of ocean and it won't be so long a game after all. But I found we are on continent 1 at the start, and yet continent 3 seems adjacent to the west, the very next square to the city view? What does this mean, other than to send a unit down the river that way soon, I don't know?

As to the decisions I think I'll build just here right now, in fact I've done it already, and I will get a settler before an exploratory warrior. I research Alphabet because it's top of the list and on the way to Monarchy, and I will work the silk on the river as it is 1 food, 2 shields and 3 arrows. We can have the settler done before Madrid grows too much, and meanwhile we bank a few $. “

After a pause one of the group took a breath and said “well you make some good points, but perhaps.. anyway keep a log and we'll see. Do you want a coffee, we tend to drink it all the time to help stay awake.”

… to be continued in the spoiler in a couple of weeks.

Inkerman.

Welcome Inkerman indeed. It is good to see another GOTM player, specially an experienced one.

Magic, the starting position looks great. I wonder what lies behind. Did you design this map yourself?

Needless to say this is a wonderful position for an OCC.
