So it is scenario with a revealed map, no proper OCC-site nearby, two settlers, mediocre terrain in general, this sound like a good setup for EC...

If it wasn't for that island way down in the south which I named "Wasteland" or "Nowaja Semlja" (an artic island the Russians used for nuclear tests). So despite the good EC-setup, I decided to take the challenge! I wouldn't want to be the ruler of a devastated world, suffering from endless cycles of global warming! Instead, I would clean up this apocalyptic mess, civilize the world and reach for the stars.

This took way longer than usual, I think I also took up a bad habit of mine and got lost in the game and just "played along".

Here is the first part of my log:
plan: ??? start settling the continent, wait for pollution effects;
tech plan: monarchy -> trade -> republic(?)

-4000 Peking founded, 2nd settler starts moving se to found potential SSC with gold and pheasant
-3950 researching Alphabet
-3750 Alph->CoL, Shanghai founded
-3400 Peking settler, newspaper reports scientists warning about global warming
-3350 CoL -> Monarchy (of course, it's scenario!)
-3250 Canton founded (on river)
-3200 Shanghai size 2, work gold for science and -3050 discovery of monarchy (delaying settler production)
-3150 global warming! pheasant turns to buffalo
-3050 Shanghai settler, shrinks => 1 lousy beaker short for monarchy

plan: Do something about pollution (ship 2 settlers over to clean up), focus on ocean specials for new cities, send warriors to nearby AIs

-3000 Mon -> Bronze
-2850 Monarchy established
-2600 Next warning of warming
-2500 Nanking founded (southern coast, on jungle, access to fish and whale)
-2450 Bronze -> MM
-2400 Meet Vikings, give CB, Mon, get MM, Curr., peace
-2350 Research to trade
-2300 Next event (Shanghai now has peat), Tsingtao founded (jungle, with spice and whale)
-2250 Vikings demand withdraw, refuse, war; Shanghai starts wonder
-2100 Meet Aztec warrior, give monarchy, MM, get Math, peace
-1850 Trade -> Writing
-1750 Warning
-1450 Event, Shanghai in trouble now
-1400 1st settler lands on Wasteland
-1350 Writing -> pottery; meet russians, they demand 150g, refuse, war
-1200 Viking warrior near Shanghai, spend some gold, hail, cease fire for Bronze
-1100 1st pollution cleaned by barely rescued Shanghai settler, Chengdu founded
-1000 Hangchow founded

stats at 1000 BC:
cities: 8; techs: 11 (pottery), gov: Monarchy, gold: 118, polluted tiles: 24 (1 worked on)
units: 4 settler, 2 warriors, 1 boat, 1 dip, 1 phalanx

Hi Major,

I found the pollution on Nowaja Semlja meant I didn't have a feel for how the game would go. I expected there would be repeated icecap meltings, but I didn't know how often or how severe they would be and what the impact on progress would be. I imagine the game composer had established things so there would be several cycles, no matter what the player did.

I did think the repeated meltings would curtail the AI, and that I would choose significantly more successful city sites than the AI in the peculiar circumstances. I would try only to build on coastal sites with access to an ocean special.

It should not be difficult to win, eventually. It was a case of judging how to time the investment in pollution removal.

One idea was I should move all spare settlers in the direction of the pollution, making some cities as I go, maybe 6 or so, with the aim to start clearing the pollution quickly. But I wasn't at all confident that I could make sufficient settlers available soon enough to make enough difference. I suppose I felt I could end up some way into the game with all my energy going into pollution cleanup.

In practice I resigned myself to establishing a working civilization around the starting point, with a later expansion in the direction of the pollution. Looking back from the current year - I am a long way in now but not yet finished - I may have overdone the waiting - but then I got diverted as seems to happen to many of us with this game. I am impressed you had already got some pollution cleared in 1000BC.

With the flood warnings I took a one turn delay to build Beijing on high ground. The second city came on the coast with access to whales. For the third I deviated from the guidance, to get a city that first flourished and then floundered as the terrain around it changed.

Like you I switched to monarchy in 2850 (discovering it that turn), and met the Vikings before 1000 BC with predictable results - it makes up for the "villages only" barbarian settings I suppose.

I didn't keep a summary status or save from 1000BC but I see from my log I had 9 cities then and also 11 techs. I think your game with one city less and settlers already working on pollution will have the edge.

regards, Inkerman

Is nobody else playing this game?

Comparing our logs, I was way behind in cities (as usual ;), I wouldn't know where to put all those cities) but more or less even in techs. I also bult the Pyramids to help the cities grow with their poor terrain.

Gemopolis was a great trading city and it was in constant demand of oil, which Tsingtao could supply, resulting in payouts of 1797g after both cities were fully grown and had the neccessary improvements.
Right now I am almost finished, it's just a few more turns until my full-size spaceship arrives.

I agree with Major that it does seem a bit quiet here this month. Here's a trimmed log for me to the same point as the previous post.

Conclusion: Similar to Major Advantage's game in city stats and diplomacy at this stage, but 8 techs behind and it does not reflect the fact that in that game pollution has now been controlled, and soon enough that the world will have retained some good land. I did not appreciate that enough pollution could be removed before the warming events had run their full course. Comparing logs the second reason for my slower game was less successful wars with the Vikings. These two factors will no doubt make a big difference by the end: I plan to run through to a max spaceship too.

So it is still just two for tea! ;)

The difference in techs might partly result form tech-gifting: The indians were too far away to be a threat, so I did not hesitate to give them all (or at least most) techs they wanted to lower my costs. When the Aztecs had GL I was more careful about it, but resumed tech-dumping after electricity.
The Vikings in my game were brave (or rather stupid) and started war with everybody around them, so they lost two cities to me, one to Aztecs, one to India and were gone. It felt almost like the Partitions of Poland in the 18th century. ;)

I didn't do much in the next part, mostly improving terraing and slowly progress through the tech tree.

Interesting spelling of "Shakespeare's", no doubt reflecting a view of the English common in Germany!

I cleared the pollution in 1400, no grassland or plains had survived.

It seems the gap did not widen as much in the period 1000-1500 as I might have expected. My population was much less, but the number of techs and cities are still close. The AI has 9 less cities, probably the extra warming has hit them harder.

Initial Planing

Continent 1, which we are on, is huge. Most likely all rivals are going to be on this land mass.
There are 13 land masses, three of them single tile and several others tiny. There are no good OCC sites around. Besides in OCC it would be impossible to clean up the existing pollution. Restarts on is not great for early conquest. How about early landing with about 20 cities to keep real time low.

Strategy thought: With repeated waves of global warming the world will turn to wasteland and would not be suitable for an early landing strategy. This GOTM had a lot of puzzle-like aspects. First, was the problem of cleaning pollution, which needed a focused attempt to get 2 settlers on a trireme ASAP. Then, the land was so crummy (and got worse) so a lot of the big civ techniques just weren't viable. Hut I tried anyway! Massive democracies are not my most elegant thing, but that's what seemed appropriate to me in this game. It turned out that getting 1-turn advances was a constant puzzle, and I was successful only part of the time.

Here is the first part of my log:

First goal is to build 4 cities ASAP which means normal builds and doubling. One city on coast. Then in the third round, two settlers go on a trireme.

Trade routes are working: 5 cities to South island, 4 vans north every other turn,. Some smaller cities deliver to Wonderville.
Wonderville has everything, but needs more swamp removed. Paoting (S island delivery city) needs infrastructure. Need another round of engineers to make sure eveybody gets good land. There is still developable land in the NE.

Modules = 180 sheiles = 3 freights + 30
Components = 320 shields = 6freights + 20.

33 + 18 + 18 = 71 freights. That's 2 turns at fastest.
Extra shields: 30 x 33 = 990. + 6 x 30 = 180 + 3 x 20 = 80
total $ 1250 (totally doable – the problem is the 71 freight.)

set science to 0 to max tax.

1822 Fundy => Env
1824 Beijing Uranium to Paoting (d, 992). Twice! Launch next turn.

Change many cities to Aqueduct.
1827 Environmentalism =>Amphib
buy 12 aqueducts. Need more wonders, but in the event, the hobby turned out to be growth.

1831 Arrive on AC.

Wow, you managed to land before 1850 on this map? You got 4-5 rounds of global warming which likely destroyed much of the arable land. Amazing result. Wonderful job.

I got 12 one-turn advances this game - and I worked like crazy for each one! At the end I was still too short of cash to get enough freight for all the wonders - there were at least four on the table. I don't recall a map with such challenging problems, and I really enjoyed it.
