I just got Civ 2 in January 2K2, so how do expect me to have mastered Deity level? I am being Beaten up by 2 civs, the Great Wall was just nullified, Barbarians galore,:rocket: and I am trying to learn this facinating technique called writing! :die!: It's rediculous!! If you're trying to get newbies into GOTM, you're going about it in the wrong way. I'm waiting until next month.

A lot of people seem to be able to deal with deity.

But of course we don't have a deity level ever month, for the exact reason you stated. ;) Last month was emperor so the next GOTM will probably be a bit easier.

But hey, we are after all Civilization Fanatics. ;) :yeah:

yes, most have had the game for years...deity is a matter of fact for them.
I am very surprised civ2 is still getting new players :D.Probably something to do with civ3......

Just try your best.Do a little looking thru some old strategy threads. You'll learn something I'm sure.

Sorry about that Reddwarfian. I made it a deity game because I was under the wrong impression that everyone wanted a Deity game. :o

We can have a King level game next month...on medium/small size map. Think you can handle it?

Lower than King???
Cool, why don´t we leave the AI totally out of the game???

But seriously, NOBODY should have a problem surviving on Deity level! All you have to do is read the great ( :goodjob: ) strategy threads on beating Deity in the Civ2 Strategy forum and act accordingly. There is so much info here, so use it!

But when we play less than on King level, most of us will be able to build the spaceship before 1000AD and the AI civs will still be holding spears and bows.

If we have a GOTM on such a low level then we should make the map more challenging!
If we would just be able to build, lets say, up to 10 cities, it could be another challenge for most of us BUT new players will win too with 10 cities on a low level.
So custom maps or a rule of a maximum number of cities would be appropriate!
:D

I support ren and I agree with Lucky. I have had trouble with anything above Chiefatain level. The city limit rule would be acceptable.

Maybe we should just have someone like Smash play the game until a certain date (maybe 3000 BC) and then use that as the starting point for everyone. That way the people that are use to lower levels will have a solid base to start with along with a farily low level. :)

Smash would still be allowed to play because he knows no more about the map than everyone who is starting at the point he stopped. It would be an accelerated start-up, but without the computers stupid way of doing it.

Sure it is POSSIBLE to survive at deity. But I don´t find it very enjoyable. Quite opposite of that actually. I´d love to see a game at Prince level. That would give me a chance to adjust to more challenging levels than what I usually played in Civ 2.
I really wish difficulty could be modified so that the AI would play to it´s best ability without affecting the player´s difficulty in building up towns.

I have not seen one post in the Spoiler thread from the people who complain about the difficulty so much here!!! :p

If you really have so many problems playing at higher difficulty levels you should ask questions, read others stories of the game and learn!
That is also part of the GOTM! The Spoiler thread is often used to discuss certain tactics and give hints and tips. The famous Starlifter ( :king: ) was supreme at this, he wrote pages long posts about certain topics to help newer players. This is also how I became so much better.

There are always people around to give you a little help and tips how to master certain situations like Smash, Duke and me.
In this months GOTM spoiler thread we also have pretty useful information, for example about how to decide on best city locations, hut exploring patterns and limiting barbarian activity. And about how to increase your science funding and money reserve. :goodjob:
Although Matrix unusually showed us his MOD powers! ;)

Most of these tactics and tips are NOT included in the manual or any strategy compilation!
And together with reading these tips, asking questions how to best implement them in a game, reviewing older savegames to see how it is done and reading the strategy forum to clear everything up it is possible for EVERYBODY to master Deity.
Maybe not in the first try but eventually.

I know what I´m talking about. I started with a Warlord GOTM, placed reasonably well, but was astonished to see how much better it could be done. After reading some posts and trying some new strategies in the next GOTM I placed even better.
And after reviewing everything I could find and learning how to implement these strategies I am now able to place in the top 3, even at Deity!
So getting 3 or 4 difficulty levels better should really be no problem at all!
:D

This was my first try.

The GOTM is also NOT ment that everybody wins every game.
Losing or retiring is also part.
Look at earlier results to see what I mean!
:D

I ususally play at Prince level on a large map -- but the challenge for me is to build ALL the Wonders in only five cities.:D

Actually I've played a King & Empoeror level game limiting myself to just five cities -- game goes much faster.

There is one level we have never had in GotM.....chieftain.Last time I played cheiftain was an occ game where I had Space Flight by 1300 bc.I'd play it :)

I am enjoying the game, although I'm very used to Emperor and find Deity a ferocious challenge. I'm at 1220AD, have 23 cities of my own and just captured The Udal. So the war is just beginning. I don't know how you guys manage to play so fast! I'll send in what I have on the last day, next week I believe...

I did send an EMail to matrix@civfanatics.net of my save file sup to about 1AD on 2/23 and never heard back from you...

True, GOTM8 in September was Warlord.
The first GOTM I played, found this site just in the middle of September and gave the GOTM a try.

And therefore I understand the newbies.
Starting with a Emperor or Deity GOTM is really somewhat difficult, I don´t know if I would have started playing if it wasn´t Warlord back then?!

But it is also interesting to see that some people have even just bought the game and several start their first GOTM! :goodjob:
A lower difficulty level is ok with me but we should have some restrictions, either due to the map or a city limit or such! Otherwise every Chieftain or Warlord game will turn out to be a race who can launch his SS closest to 0AD. :crazyeyes
And every newcomer will still have difficulties reaching the Modern Age before 1500AD, the gap will be even larger!
:D
