I picked hanging gardens. Celebrating with 3 whales gives the same trade as colossus, plus it helps elsewhere. I had some close calls with barbarians, and the greeks were nasty early. I bribed most cities, and destroyed all capitols by 1870, leaving the japanese with only one island city which I could have taken then. My plan is to launch a full ss.
This is my first gotm game, and I like the idea. The choice of which start is a good one.

Smash, that is very impressive, but I have a question.
In playing this Gotm the first two huts I popped were advance tribes, how would you handle this, or does it automatically invalidate the OCC.

ferenginar 88

That's the only case you can reload. And if you want OCC, you should. Check starlifter's Paulicy link.

Yes that is what must be done.I only do it for huts on plains or grass. You won't get an advancer from any other terrain.

It can be quite frustrating if you forget and enter a hut at 700AD or something.Likewise, reloading can be frustrating as you may have to reload umpteen times just to get something besides an advanced tribe...and it is usually barbs ;)

Well gang, the newbie cloud over my head is now bigger and darker. I submited my lame attempt at my first GOTM. I retired in 2020 with squat. LOL. Time to hit the threads and do me some learnin'. If anyone can refer me to some really good threads on "Successful Trade Management", I would be grateful. After some reading, I am going to try this one again to see if I do better. I chose Colosss btw. Later......

Given my time constraints I knew I had to go OCC, especially when I saw those whales. It hurts not having rivers or anything, but it was a servicable spot. Much like smash I seriously considered HG, but figured (a) it wouldn't really help until size 3 and (b) depending on my tech path, it might be several turns before I had a wonder to work on. Turned out that wasn't an issue, but that might be in part because of the colossus speeding my early techs. Approaching 1ad now and I've got nothing close to Smash's city. Oh well.

I started with the gardens -- rationale was due to my expected tech path. I normally pick Bronze Working as my “off” tech en route to Monarchy, and wow I start with it! Thus I can build Colossus & usually do. Hanging Gardens, on the other hand requires Pottery, which I don’t look for until after Philosophy, Trade & sometimes Engineering.

Reading through the logs is enjoyable -- clearly a variance in the way the game plays out.

I started two days ago (couldn’t wait any longer). :)

Didn’t do any black clicking. Preliminary suspicions: given the gift of three techs at start, one should be suspicious that there are corresponding disadvantages such as poor initial site (not this time!), small opportunity to expand #1 island -- (LH? we’ll take the chance), small opportunity to expand #2 neighbors (GW?, again we’ll take the chance) or maybe both. Send the archer out walking, but build a phalanx in Moscow before a settler.

-3600, discover Alphabet, start CL; Archers discovers a hut with an angry horse--ow, ow, ow, glad to be alive.
-3550, defender on the job; start a settler.
-3200, discover CL, start Write
-2800, Settler founds St. Pete
-2650, discover Write, start Mon
-2500, Moscow emits a second settler, starts building a Temple (which is not that necessary with HG, I guess, but in looking through the happy stuff, it looks like it could make a difference when the city gets circa size 5-6 or so with WLTK days. I kind of have the time now & want this city to grow, and would like WLTK to continue through the construction of Colossus, next of the list of things to do.)
-2400, nothing exciting to report, except that I’m 25 beakers away from Monarchy & will miss the oedo turn, but hey I’m looking at beakers!
-2200, discover Mon.
-2100, revolt,
-2050, now a King.
-2000, hut -- polytheism; (saw a quick flash of a barb to the west & orange; check the top 5 cities (should have done this at the start!) -- Moscow & St. Pete are #1 & #5, with Vikes, Aztecs & Amerks in the game -- expect science pressure & some early wonder competition accordingly.
-1900, hut -- horse -- non (soooo we’re that close to someone else…)
-1850, start Col (should have RB the temple…guess I’m playing too fast & sloppy, oh well, I’ll need to start some better habits).
-1700, hut -- Archer -- non (still have rock to search, but with a potential neighbor, maybe I can try some sort of early recon in force -- new stuff for me). Hey it’s a Greek warrior who says hi: out of the four techs available, I take Map, Sea, & WC for BW, HBR, & Poly (pass on Pot for Mon). hut, advanced tribe (Minsk, but later it is seen that this site is one space away from an ideal site, so this will produce a settler quickly…)
-1500, We love the King in Moscow

-1300 -- Warrior sneak attacks my horse near Therm; horse gets little damage, but fortifies anyway. Warrior inside Therm. attacks out, emptying the city, soooo my horse steps in, the size 1 city evaporates & I get Pottery. Therm being the third Greek city means that Athens & Sparta (or ruins of…) lie further beyond. Next turn, when I say no, I later accept their desire for peace with $100g.
-1150 -- discover Myst, start Curr.(postpone Feud, Mas., Rep.)
-775 -- discover Cur, start Phil. (postpone Trade, Feud, Mas., Rep., IW, Wh)
-725 -- now with 5 cities
-700 Build Colossus; 200K pop. 1st (actually 1st in the rest (except Mil. serv.) as well. Trade Myst for Masonry with the Greeks.
-500 -- Learn Phil; learn Mono; start Trade (bypassing IW, Wh, Feud, Cons, Mth, Rep) place a barracks in St. Pete to address the expected Greek problem
-450 -- Start Pyr; nobody else has even started a wonder -- strange…..
-300 -- discover Trade, opt for Math (science takes about 9 turns at current rates).
-200 -- now at 7 cities
-75 -- discover Math, opt for Astro; Greeks push me too far -- of course it is conveniently after a couple of vet Crusaders are on the scene. Athens is crushed & Sparta is purchased. Athens 2 will soon be located near the original ruins. Come to think of it, Sparta could benefit from a relo as well.
-25 -- 400K pop.

So far so good, but I feel that I might have been better off stating Kiev closer to Moscow, getting an arrow or two sooner & perhaps switching to Monarchy as many as four turns sooner. My game is still too little search, too few cities.

I’m still playing too fast & loose during the early game. Finally developed a standardized log sheet -- need to set it up a bit better -- but forgot to have it on hand for the first turns of the game. Oh well, maybe next time I’ll have it at the get go.

I choose the Hanging Gardens, always my favorite for quick growth. Also, my Capital SSC was celebrating quite a bit, makes it like the Colossus... and when I built the Colossus too...

But my population has not been what I've seen before. I think it's because this land is dry. The AI is having a hard time, fighting amongst themselves, but seem to not have lost a city to barbs. Recently around 900 AD, I watched the Americans fight off a furious Barb Legion attack. I was glad to see them do well, as Washington is a major trading partner with me. Anyway, I've built every wonder I want, 10 of them as of 1200 AD, and the AI has only got Great Library.

Since someone voted for my logs, here is thru 100 AD:

Greetings, Comrades
Imperial Leader Grigor has built for you a wondrous building with a beacon atop its spire which enables us to explore the world and force it to submit to our way of life in extra quick time! Let us begin without delay on our goal of **TOTAL WOLD DOMINATION** ---- Muahahahahahahahaha!

BC
3900 What are we building? Useless soft units?? Abandon the shields -switch to Barracks! Our Archer searches for weak foreign prey.
3750* Peasant tribesman give us one of their unseasoned horse units to train
3700 We discover the Cyrillic Alphabet which none of our foes can read. We will learn the secret of maps and scourge the seas
3650 A band of domestic kulaks sees the light of truth. We point them to a fertile area
3550* A village of weak and spineless peasants give us 100 gold!! We will not repay them in kind. St. Petersburg founded. Barracks built. We sneakily begin a settler to convert to a great ship.
3450 another peasant tribe gives us a horse with a magical property - requires no governmental care! We are suspicious - there must be somebody around.
3350*We learn about Maps and unsinkable triremes. Although we on principle reject all religions as soft invitations to stray from the true path, we have heard that those who worship multiple gods know the secrets of unstoppable warfare with elephants. We shall test that rumor. Barbarous peasants appear from a village and are quickly stifled
3200 Our first ship, but no forces to put into it...
3150* Weak peasants give us 50 gold
3100 We discover the secret of elephants. We do not have the option to learn to write - we decide to research currency because the other civilizations won't
3050 Soft peasants give us 50 gold. Rush vet horse in St. Pete
2900 We find the Greeks. We are belligerent, and get WC as tribute. SIlly soft ones! We attack anyway, kill warrior
2850 We build vet Elephant, load into Trireme. The world will soon be ours!
2650 On a new island, we find a peasant village which gives us a magical Elephant. Oh boy.
2550 We find intelligent kulaks who have founded Kiev on new island. We will build a barracks there. Archer attacks Greek warrior and learns battle hardness the old fashioned way.
2500 Currency =>writing. We find Kaupang with our horse. They are spared for the moment. They trade Masonry for maps. We doubt they will get to use it! We receive Mysticism in tribute. A band of wandering kulaks will become workers for the warlike city of Kiev.
2450 We find a belligerent Japanese warrior. We kill the warrior for his effrontery.
2350 We find the Indians in Bombay. They grovel at our feet and give us 75g.
2300 Our patience with the Soft Indians is exhausted. We destroy Bombay. A village in the mountain knows the secret of working Iron and we gleefully extract it from them.
2150 After silly token resistance, the Russian juggernaut captures Delhi, and the pusillanimous Indians are no more! We find the fat-citied Americans. We trade for Code of Laws, which should give us excellent choices next discovery. We extort 25g.
2050 after recovery of hardened archer, our troops despoil Athens. Spineless Greeks destroyed!
1900 We find Trondheim and raze it cruelly.
1750 The Vikings are destroyed! - without recourse to making ships, as planned.
1600 Minsk founded on home island
1550 We discover the secret of Writing. Our so-called diplomats will cajole what our Elephants deign to spare. Despite our fondness for the warlike life, our advisers convince us to study the secret of Monarchy.
1400 We attack New York and take it. Smolensk founded on site of Kaupang.
1200 Odessa founded on home island. A truly good player would be able to develop the home island for a high score in the next 20 turns...
975 A glorious turn as Washington is captured, Monarchy taken, and the Americans destroyed.
925 We become a kingdom. Czar Lenin finds new methods of brutal cruelty which increase food and trade.
875 We find the Aztecs right under our noses. We collect 75 g. Little good will it do them
850 We learn Construction and investigate trade
800 Tenochtitlan destroyed. Pottery taken
775 A villlage donates a green legion. Teotihuacan bribed, Aztecs destroyed. A quick and satisfying war. But where is the last Japanese city?
575 After 200 years, craven Kyoto is finally discovered.
525 Kyoto destroyed! We Luxuriate. Czar Lenin Augustus has 44 citizens and one Wonder.

I chose Colossus because it benefits me from the beginning (5 vs 3 Trade) and lasts the longest of all the Ancient Wonders besides Pyramids. Oracle requires building Temples and Hanging Garden doesn’t benefit until the city hits 3 citizens and Monarchy (although then and with each new city it is probably better than Colossus). The Great Wall is primarily defensive, although the benefits toward Barbarians could be useful with Raging Hordes and forcing peace could be useful against the Greeks and Vikings. The Lighthouse would be useful for a small island, which this might be because of the three starting techs despite the triple whales, but it seems like there are other land masses nearby (legal black clicking). Pyramids could speed growth, but WLTCD is faster and can be controlled and planned. There was NO WAY I was going to take Great Library and have my tech plan "rooked" by AI’s tech choices.

AI CIVS (from top 5 cities):
White Rus (me!)
Green ?Jap/Zulu/Babyl - first two are trouble, thirds a charm
Blue Viking A E - - trouble: agressive & expansionist
Yellow Aztec - P C - good neighbors, dont expand much
Cyan Amer R - C - civilized, goes for tech & wonders
Orange Greek - E M - big trouble
Purple ?Mong/Sioux/Ind - if Mongol, mega trouble, others OK

TECH PLAN:
GOT:
Bronze, Horse, CerBur (Phalanx, Horsemen, Temple) (no 30-shield unit)
GOALS:
Writing (Diplomats=30, Library)
Monarchy (No resource penalty, less corruption, 3 free units)
Trade (MarcoPolo to monitor other civs, trade for tech & maps;
caravans for $ & wonders, Marketplace)
(fillers: Maps, Mysticism)
Monotheism (Mikes Chapel)
Republic (WLTCD, less corruption, more trade)

POST-MARCOPOLO STRATEGIC REVIEW
=================
All civs are close and small, 2-3 cities (Indian 1!)
With tech gifting their research is going to be VERY slow.
Greeks on my continent, 2 cities (could do 1 more).
I don't trust Greeks as far as I can throw an elephant.
No one else has started a single Wonder yet, despite having
Maps, Pottery, and some I gave (Lit, Trade, Myst).
They seem to be fighting amongst themselves on BigCont
using Warriors, Horse, Phalanx, Archer.
My wall across Greek peninsula cannot go on hills/mtns without
angering Sparta.
Athens is better trade spot anyway. (KILL SPARTA?)
I've only got 6 cities, which is OK for preventing unrest due to
sprawl but does not cover continent well.
I desperately need more settlers doing roads, irr & mine.
SSC and WC(MRV) doing well, rest too small.
Need faster city growth - Pyramids? WLTCD?
Need hapiness improvements first - MC, Temples, Colosseums?
Good sites not adjacent, could "shoe-horn" some.
Need a "Great Road" to Greeks for trade, & ships to BigCont.
Beachhead city on BigCont: river valley W of Tenoch +/o 4
special W of Kaupang?
Washington & Kyoto furthest from SSC, both good trade land.
DECISION: CHANGE TO FAST WAR STRATEGY? not yet

What's the secret of cut&paste posting here to preserve columns? I used tabs, which disappeared, and editing to insert spaces does not seem to work...

Has anyone investigated the changing Supplies and Demands of foreign cities? There may be a pattern there, like OEDO years...

Also wish I had a way to pop up the number of beakers I've accumulated so far...

Based on the description I would choose pyramids, and I'll let the archer come back to the city and disband it. This way I can squeeze a settler before the city reaches size 2. This can be accomplished before turn 10, and another settler is on the way. By about turn 15 I would have put down my 2nd city and have another settler produced. I'll rehome the settler to my 2nd city and keep the first city as a settler building powerhouse. Every 5 turns it is going to get me a settler, so by turn 40 I'll have 7 cities at least (or I can add some settlers to the 2nd city for a size-5 strategy.
