I don't quite have a feeling for trading or city sprawl, or SSC, so I did a mix of it. I hope everyone make detailed logs about how they play, so when we look at the result, everyone knows how they got there. :)

Hmm... Trying to imagine this in historical context. The military is out on manuevers and finds a small tribe of people in some backwater area. Wow! They teach me about philosophy! This is some thought-provoking stuff! Let me share this with my commanding officers! :rotfl:

I've been semi sleazing my way with good results.
At 1ad:
58 cities
27 techs
6 wonders-Pyramids,Gardens,Great Wall,King Richard's,Mich's and SoL.250 of 400 done towards Leo's.

No civs conquered :(

Currently in Communism after brief stint in Republic.Monarchy before that.

Smash, how did you build 58 cities so fast? You must've built nothing but settlers! But then again, thats not possible since you built all those wonders too. I've got to study some of your saved games...

- Narz :king:

Wow. Smash, what is the key to get such good result? I have some questions.

1) Did you improve much land? Irrigation, mines and roads?
2) Did you use many caravans for trade? Did they go to enemy cities?
3) Did you get help from barbarians this game? I tried, but no barbarian came.

Other comments? Thanks.

Settlers, units(warrior, phalanx, horsemen, crusaders, diplomats, and triremes.2 explorers also) and caravans.1 temple, market, aquduct in the capitol only currently size 12.

I have built lots of cities close together. This lets me build more cities faster.2 begats 4.4 begats 8.8 begats 16 and so on.

WARNING; World Map Screen Shot

Its abit of an awful way to play but it works. There was a thread recently asking about it so.....

Actually in this game I have not delivered a single caravan anywhere.Just used them for wonders only.If it were deity level,I would have built a few food camels and grow my cap that way but since it was king level I could handle a Republic fairly easily and use "we love" to bring my cap up.

The barbs have not been helpful at all.In fact, they are why I built the wall. They were beginning to be a royal pain on my crappy little warrior defended cities. Not supposed to be so bad on roving bands but it is..or was :D

I have gotten a fair amount of tributes though. That has financed some of the rushbuying of settlers and caravans.

As you can see(now that I added a picture ;)) I have built an extensive road network. This is important for ics as the few good units you have must be able to move quickly to combat threats.Dips and crusaders are on that job right now.

I had to irrigate a few squares to avoid famine or disbanding of settlers when settler's food requirements change from 1 food per turn to 2 food per turn under Republic and now,Communism.Beyond that not much so far..

Basically its like this:
build city
build warrior
build settler
build 1 road
found new city
repeat

Eventually the "core" begins the caravan building while one central city(ususally capitol) builds the good stuff like wonders. The caravans in ICS generally add to wonders but also can be used to grow population early. If you are going super growth, you'll go ahead and deliver them.
Yes, you can combine ICS and supergrowth.

Looking at your game, I think I will try to build cities close to each other on the next gotm. It seems to suit every situations very well. Great production, great science and lots of settlers.

I started a log, but didn't keep it up. I will have to be more diligent in the future, since I think that it would be a fun way to revisit the game long after it has been played. Ahh, memories...

Seriously, I am up to AD1700 and all other civs are mine except the Zulu. My armies are on the way to meet them now. :ar15:

Smash, isn't your strategy for city development an example of Infinite City Sprawl/Sleaze (ICS) that was discussed in another thread recently? Granted, this is a small world (60x60), but not that small! ;)

It is.

The good part of ICS is terrain is not so important. Many players use it as a backup plan in multiplay should they get stuck on dirt and rocks. No reason it wouldn't work on good terrains also.

But minding after all those cities is a pain.Once you have Mich's and JSB or SoL or all 3 :)..life becomes much easier. No more managing is needed.

Or you can d/l Xin's CivManager :D

Here is an updated picture of the mess circa 500AD.

WARNING; World Map Screen shot

Doesn't look like that many cities when you see it like that.I have no idea how many.Around 100 I figure.

I'm not so sure we should post maps of the world and such. I know this is a spoiler thread, but people do look in here while they are playing to post their progress.

I have made all the world map pictures links instead of Images. So if people really want to spoil their game they can, but if they are just trying to participate in the thread, they can do so without ruining their game.

If anyone is going to post any screenshots that reveal too much of the terrain or any world maps, please make them url's not image tags. :)

ok fine.

Is this where I go to site feedback and whine about moderator actions?

;)

1000 AD statistics:

68 cities,
7,950,000 pop, land area 1023,000 sq. miles,
4 wonders: Hanging gardens, Pyramids, Mike's, Leo's
Democracy,
37 techs, discoveries 2turns, researching economics.

I didn't keep a log but like most people I found some advanced tribes and concentrated on settling for the early stages of the game. Contacted the Russians and Vikings early and swapped some techs and demanded gold.

I didn't want to inhibit my early settler spree so I didn't go to war with the AI until I had developed monotheism for crusaders. After that the Vikings fell quickly with minimal losses so I also attacked the Indians and tried to contain the Russians.

After the Indians were destroyed I changed government to democracy but now my Eastern cities are suffering from English/Zulu/American sneak attacks as I'm having trouble securing my borders there.
What is even worse there are no good AI cities to send my caravans to. The only option I have is the Russians but there cities support too much settlers to grow beyond size 2. The Americans have larger cities and Washington is near the coast but I can't find a way to deliver my caravans alive there.

Oh and just a question regarding the final turn:
Is it allowed to raise the luxury tax setting to 100% on the final turn? That probably makes a great difference in your final score.

Yeah I only recently read about these "key civ"things etc, and the damage was already done by then. :(

..and yes its standard fair to jack your luxuries at the end.You can even go thru cities moving workers to water to squeeze a few extra happies out of it.
