GOTM 38: Spoiler 2.

IIRC you did not miss a chance to get to the "big continent" - there was no safe passage.

Ship chaining will only help you if you have a safe route (ie. no ship ending on sea or ocean tile before magnets)

I did not attack the big continent until late industrial times so I actually used transports. The only reason I did attack was to break the tedium of the peaceful game

-Did I miss a safe pre-magnetism route to the big continent, or did everyone use ship-chaining?
There was no safe route before Navigation. Magnetism isn't needed to sail the ocean. Ship chaining has two meanings. One is where you just use a bucket brigade of ships across an ocean when it's safe to do so. The more risky one is to use suicide ships before it's safe, carrying troops who will jump off one ship as it sinks into another on the same tile that doesn't. I think I've read one spoiler where the second method was used before Navigation. I did a little of the safe chaining, but not much in this game.

I did some, too, with both galleys and caravels. The galley version -- to Babylon -- was actually more useful, because I still had a lot of slow units (swords, then MIs) to shuttle over, and it took me a while to get the roads built all the way down the Greece/Babylon isthmus. Even after the roads were built, the ship chain was more direct, so I used a combination.

The front moved so fast on the large continent that the chains were harder to handle. I must have adjusted them three or four times, with corresponding backups of units on the home continent. I did have one really really long one that I used for about a dozen cavs: from a town on the southeast coast to a Greek port that could be reached the same turn, seven moves over to a port on the east side of the Greek area, then about six galleys down to southwestern Egypt, with the cavs arriving with two moves left.

Was sort of fun just as an exercise -- I've never done much ship-chaining before -- but I'm not convinced it helped all that much in the end.

edit: One thing chaining does help with that I'd never realized before is that it allows you to be more reckless in sending all units to the front. With fresh units arriving every other turn or so, you can afford to leave behind undefended territory -- even if a few enemy units do sneak in, the reinforcements can be shipped, arrive, and clean up the interlopers all on the same turn.

I sent out one and only one galley, in the early MA while I was polishing off Greece and already had all the troops I needed on that continent. Took 4 turns to get straight across to where the Iroquois were, and I found out I was 2-3 techs ahead of everyone else!

But, I never really bothered with chaining during my Japanese and Aztec conquests, since I ran a constant stream of riders, then cavalry, and eventually tanks and infantry from the lower end of my continent to a captured Japanese city. The transport chain was eventually made into a channel surrounded on both sides by ironclads(most of which I lost) and at one point, some subs filled in some gaps. Once I got airports though it was just airlifting everything possible, and getting airports in my newly captured cities ASAP unless there was enough RR support to let me get them to the front lines on the next turn.

In retrospect, I made one big mistake that probably cost me a good 5-10 years; during the Greek conquest they landed about 4 galleys full of swordsmen which razed a city that had an ancient temple in it(pre-2000 BC) and also a library and cathedral that I never rebuilt. However, I didn't think the game would last long enough for 100k to be an issue at all.

PTW Open
Going for 20K

Well, this month I managed to keep everyone else from interfering with my 20K victory. It was a nailbiter to the end, but for different reasons this time.

I entered the middle ages in 270 BC, having built a temple (2150 BC), the great lighthouse (1000 BC), a library (875 BC) and the great library (370 BC) in Shanghai. I haven't had any wars yet but I've met everyone.

Research:
I coast on GL until learning education and chemistry. Then I rush up the wonder part of the tree, heading first for free artistry and then picking up optional techs. I enter the industrial age in 1180 AD. In the industrial age I get steam power, then industrialization, then electricity, replaceable parts, medicine, scientific method, atomic theory, electronics, then back for small wonder techs. Once I hit the modern age (around 1770) I took computers before fission, then miniaturization. I didn't go speedily, as I build the FP right next to Beijing and never jumped my palace. I needed leaders for wonders and the palace would probably have jumped to Shanghai if I'd disbanded Beijing, as I've never done this before and would probably screw it up. I accepted the corruption consequences as part of the 20K tradeoffs.

Middle Age Wars:
In 190 AD I declare on the Greeks. I slowly work my way through them, wiping them out in 540 AD. I start with MI and finish with riders, starting my golden age in 420 AD. I have a lot of elite victories, but no leaders. In 620 AD my dye deal with the Babylonians ends and I declare on them. They have a zillion bowmen and it takes forever to slog through them. I finally finish them off in 1080 AD. I do get some leaders out of them, though. In 660 AD my first leader is produced, in defence, and it survives to build an army. I get two more leaders, and they both rush wonders in Shanghai.

Industrial Age Wars:
In 1200 AD I declare on Japan. They seem pretty weak, and they have silks I can get easily. In 1210 I build on their silks and rush a harbor. The next turn I take Satsuma. Unfortunately, my invasion works about as well as they usually do, and that's as far as I get. In 1240 AD a huge counter attack leaves Satsuma with only a 1/5 calvary defender. The Japanese have only obsolete units, but they have lots of them. Warriors vs cavalry kills a lot of warriors, but eventually the cavalry die, too. Luckily for me, the Japanese will talk, and we make peace before I lose Satsuma and my silk city.
The rest of the game is one dumb AI civ after another declaring on me. I ally somebody else against them and grab land slowly, usually by settling in their territory rather than taking cities. I get a lot of land this way, and lose several cities to flips as both the Iroquois and the Aztecs have lots more total culture than I do. I'm almost always strong or average militarily against the attackers and way ahead in tech, so I don't really understand why they attack. Since it increased my score substantially, I suppose I should just accept it. During these wars I get 2 more GL, but one is on defense and it dies before I get to use it.

Culture in Shanghai:
After building the GL, I miss both Colossus and HG. From then on, everything is mine. I build a colosseum (230 BC), the forbidden palace (170 AD), a cathedral (280), the Sistine Chapel (520), Bach's Cathedral (760), a university (rushed in 770), the Heroic Epic (870), Copernicus' Observatory (leader rushed in 880), Magellan's Voyage (970), Shakespeare's Theater (1160), Smith's Trading Company (leader rushed in 1170), and Newton's University (1300). I break to build a factory and rush a coal plant, then it's Universal Sufferage (1405), Theory of Evolution (1485), Hoover Dam (1550), and a hospital. Then on to the small wonders: Millitary Academy (1585), Wall Street (1605), Intelligence Agency (1630). I have to build some armies, and then I get the Pentagon in 1745. Then I wait. Finally in 1792 I learn computers and build SETI. Then next turn I short rush a research lab. I prebuild for the Manhattan Project (1814) and leader rush the UN in 1816. Because of the leader available, this works out better even though the UN is more culture than SETI. My predictor shows a win with 20124 culture points with 126 cpt. I need something else to build, but it is going to be close, as the build date for the Internet if all goes well is the turn I want to win on. I didn't know if I'd get the win if I build it that turn, but it turns out I did. I complete the Internet in 1840 and win with 20002 cp.

I built Shanghai on the coast and river SW of the start, with lots of BG but no hills. Because of this, it didn't have great long-term production - I ended up with 86 shields vs WillowBrook's 120 shields - but I got the city to size 12 early on and the early shields were good.

Overall, I was very happy with this game. I screwed up a few things, but I got a lot more things right for the first time.

@Willowbrook: I've got the faster finish. Do I have the lower score? :)

@Renata – Did you play open or predator? It sounds like your AIs were significantly undeveloped compared to my AIs. Around 900AD or even earlier (do not remember) everyone had lots of riflemen in my game.

I was playing predator, but the AI never even showed me a musket, let alone a rifle.

@AlanH – It is not that surprising in your case. Your :egypt: was very unlucky, while in my game :egypt: was a scientific leader for a long period. :egypt: was so self-confident that they dared to declare a war on us before they new where we are.

@Misfit - I discovered the big land relatively late in the game (around 400AD) after Greece and Babylon vanished. Therefore, I was not able to manipulate AI relationship. When I discovered main land, my impression was that there were no wars on this continent ever.
Sure I lined up Iroquois and Vikings against Egypt as soon as I was able to, but it was too late to prevent them from getting Nationalism. Fortunately Aztecs and Japan were gone by that time. Anyway, I think those riflemen delayed my victory for about a hundred years :(.

@ solen -- I played Open. Probably always will. :) Yes, they were extremely slow in research, as a consequence of the Aztecs' incessant warmongering. I had next to nothing to do with it; the whole continent was a morass of shifting alliances and backstabs even when I first met them in the late BCs. (To the point where I was easily outresearching them with 40% of my economy going to lux due to war weariness. I even had a little cash left over.) I never traded the Greece or Babylon contacts; that might have helped slightly, too.

They did speed up a bit later on -- there was a long period of relative peace starting about the time I completed the Babylonian conquest. I was leery of encouraging more war at that point, because I didn't want the Aztecs to get any stronger than they were. So I never started an alliance until the last 15 or so turns, when I joined up temporarily with Japan to isolate the Aztecs' jungle-belt cities. The Aztecs actually made it to the industrial age near the end (visible only by their city style and such; I'd long since shut off research), but no Nationalism and no cavs -- I had their saltpeter by then. (I was considering the same metallurgy-gifting that AlanH did -- Aztecs had the Great Wall -- but they finally researched it a few turns before I was ready to attack.) I did get a half-dozen or so cavs from the Japanese, but their civ was so small the whole war was over in three or four turns.

Ahh - you've done it, CKS! I should have been content to sit around and watch the AI's beat each other up and gone for a low score. My Jason score was 6438, just slightly higher than my Fixarus.

Congratulations! :)

Wow alan you were beating up on Pikes/MDI with your Cav's ?
Pikes and spears.

My Riders took out the Japanese, who had no iron or horses, so no Samurai. Then they started into the Aztecs, who had a few knights until I reorganised their resources, but no saltpeter. I upgraded to cavalry during that war and they were history. Iroquois had upgraded their warriors to knights by the time I turned on them, but they had been at war with Egypt, Azteca an the Vikings for quite a while. They'd lost ground to the Vikings, who had several Iroquois towns when I showed up, so I think their attack was pretty well gassed already. The worst units I had to contend with were Viking Galloglass (Berserks) - 6.2.1. But by then I could live with the small number of cavalry losses they inflicted duing our four-turn land war.

How did I miss this?? I've been playing civIII for all of about 4 months under the impression I needed Magnetism to sail the ocean safely! I apparently didn't realize that Navigaiton is called Navigation for good reason.

@WillowBrook – accept my sincere condolences :(. It will be frustrating if there were only two 20K games and you managed to miss both awards, for the fastest victory and for the lowest score victory.

One more question: is moving from Open to Predator like moving from Conquest to Open, in that you can't go back? I'd like to try Predator on the next Monarch game but if it means I have to keep playing Predator I might reconsider that.

You can move between them. I was trying to stick to predator, but I dropped back to open for 37, because it was only my second deity gotm, and I lost the first at conquest level. I'll probably stick to predator now though.

GOTM 38c--part 3: The Medieval Era

400: We start chiv. If we can take Athens, we get Riders! We should pick up Theo next turn. We get contacts with Egypt and Iroquois. We open embassies with our new contacts. Thebes is 15 turns from Sun-Tzu. Swords upgrade to MIs and spears to pikes. We buy off Babylon for 62 + 2/turn. We are ahead of them Mono and Engineer!

410: Iroquois and Egypt ally against Aztecs. We get Theo. Sword holds off archer near Athens, but hoplite gets him.

420: Land two swords outside Sparta. Land cat at Thermo and Delphi. Swords make their way toward Athens, also. Workers clear jungle w of Kaifeng. Beijing starts a market.

430: An archer from Athens fails against sword, sword goes leet. Leet sword kills hoplite in Sparta, still no leader. Vet sword doesn't even dent a hoplite.

440: We hear from the Vikings, who trade us territory maps. That's everyone. We are 2nd in the world, to the Aztecs. Nidaros is capital of Vikings. MI loses to hoplite.

450: Japan starts Sistine. Galley engages Greek galley, loses. Leet sword kills hoplite in Athens. WHAT do I have to do to get a leader? Vet sword kills hoplite, gets redlined.

460: Drop off MI and cat at Delphi, moving in Athens. Greeks reinforce. Send sword and pike on run toward new lands.

470: Canton finishes pike, starts market. Galley sinks. Beijing starts Sistine.

480: MI and cats arrive outside Athens. Infantry unloaded on other side of Athens.

490: Athens sends an archer against MI, loses. One MI loses to hoplite, the other makes a clean kill and goes leet.

500: Cat damages hoplite in Athens, MI kills it. Athens is down to a wounded spear, but I have nothing left this turn. Should fall next time. Whip temple in Chinan and library in Anyang. Send workers over to help road after conquering Athens.

510: Anyang and Chinan start pikes. Workers unloaded at Thermo move to connect road, send MI from Delphi to guard. MI attacks hoplite, fails.

520: Archers send a sortie against siegers, fails. Babylonians show up. Athens falls, starts lib. Capitol moves to Corinth. Egypt has Education--no!

530: Nidaros builds Sun-Tzu. Greeks make a sortie against Thermo, fails. Babs surround Athens, I don't trust them. Leet sword fails to kill hoplite. Vet MI finishes the job. Our vet galley fails against theirs.

540: We get invention from GL. As expected, Babs sneak us again. They take Athens, but don't destroy it. We get Japan and Egypt to declare war on Babylon. Whip Nanking for an aquaduct.

550: Babylonians take Greek slaves. We defeat one of their galleys. Our military is weak compared to Babs and they have a republic. Time to bite the bullet and switch to monarch? We roll the dice, get 4 turn anarchy. Shift some clowns to taxmen to balance budget.

560: We get education, GL is obsolete . Babs send out SoD, two smaller stacks. How do we beat these guys? We make peace with Greece. They even offer us 2 gold to backstab the Babs. An elite MI fails against a pike. Our galley doesn't even dent a Babs one.

570: Egypt drags Scandinavia into the war against Babylon, and also vs.the Iroquois. Our MI kills one of theirs, but is wounded. We cannot win a war of attrition with Babs.

580: Thermo falls, as defenders manage only one kill. Japan joins Egypt in war against the Iroquois.

590: We get Republic. The Babs SOD ignores Delphi and turns toward Sparta. Egypt and Iroquois make peace. Not good rep for Egypt. Babs take Sparta.

600: Instead of trying to hold Delphi, we evacuate our troops and turn it over to Greece.

610: Egypt beats us to Sistine, so Beijing switches to uni. Rush lib in Kaifeng.

620: Kaifeng starts pike.

630: Nothing happens. What are the Babs up to? They shoulda exterminated the Greeks by now.

640: Beijing builds uni, starts cathedral. Consult power rankings. We are third, behind Aztecs and Babs. We need nav so we can get some horses. Workers mine hills near Sippar. Tsingtao switched to lib. Canton starts cathedral.

650: Kaifeng expands. The Greeks are destroyed.

660: We get chiv, start guns. Strange how it's worked out that though China is military and industrial, we don't have any of those type of wonders. Rush pike in Nanking.

670: Xinjian builds MI, starts FP. Egypt, Aztecs, and Scand are up astro. How did everyone else get Chiv at the same time?

680: WW is ruining my cities. The alliance ends in 740. Our allies love us, and we're keeping it that way.

690: Egypt got banking. We are falling behind in tech. Why isn't WW killing them? We don't have the infrastructure in place yet--too few markets.

700: Japan is weak and they have no culture. They look like a much easier target than the Babs--and they have horses. Gotta wait for the treaty to expire, though. Send a worker to join Xinjian to help build the FP.

710: Galleys gather troops to invade Japan.

720: Babs start cruising the coast. Ningpo builds lib, starts barracks. Last of the jungle is cleared.

730: Babs just sail along the coast, they seem content to leave us alone. Send the galleys.

740: ALL 3 galleys sink! Bull****! Tsingtao builds pike, starts market. We can safely make peace without loss of rep, but Babylon wants a ton. But with WW plaguing us, we have no choice. We cough up Education, 80 + 2/turn. Perfidious Babylon has sneaked us twice, so we must keep the homeland prepared. The good news is that I now have shiny happy people and can prepare some infrastructure. Egypt and Vikings don't like us anymore, but Japan still does. I reallocate percentages so that we break even, getting guns in 12.

750: Ningpo expands.

760: Japan begs our help against Babylon. Sorry, but we made peace, and we keep our treaties. Beijing builds cathedral, starts MI. Chengdu builds galley, starts lib. We are still barely keeping a balanced budget.

770: Japan and Iroquois make peace, as do Vikings and Babylon.

780: Japan and Babylon make peace. Canton builds cathedral, starts uni. We are still running a deficit.

790: Beijing builds MI. Ningpo builds barracks, starts market. Egypt has nav, they can trade us horses, but we don't have enough to offer. We trade gems + spices to Iroquois for wines + 2/turn. That should help happiness and the bottom line.

800: Vikings and Aztecs make peace, as do Egypt and Babylon. I can turn lux down to 20%, giving us profit of 23/turn. We use that profit to buy horses from Egypt at a cost of 18/turn, gems, and spices. Vikings hate us for some reason. Iroquois and Japan like us, Aztecs and Egypt dislike us. Babylon hates us, but no surprise there. Vikings and Iroquois are at war, others are at peace. Switching MI to riders.

810: Egypt tries to extort map + gold from us. We turn them down, figuring they wouldn't give up 18/turn. They do! Fine, we'll turn around and pay the Iroquois 16/turn to fight them.

820: Iroquois trade us territory maps, wanting us to kick in 1 gold. Whatever. We finally get guns, start PP. Shanghai builds pike, starts lib. Japan refuses to trade us Astro for Guns. Viks will trade Music for Guns, but we want something better. They refuse to take any luxes, but I can't figure what treaty I broke with them. We turn to our hated enemy Babylon of all people, buying astro + TM for guns + WM + 9. Naturally, we don't have saltpeter. All that desert and no saltpeter. Why can't we have one G or CotM where we have the resources?!!? We trade Viks guns + iron for horses.

830: Beijing builds rider, starts Copernicus. Will take 22 turns, probably a fool's errand, but WTH. Workers mine a mountain near Xinjian to speed up the FP.

840: Nanking builds market, starts caravel. Tsingtao builds market, starts rider. Anyang builds pike, starts court. Hangchow builds MI, starts market.

850: Egypt takes Centralia.

860: Workers mine mountain near Beijing. Speeds up Copernicus to 16 from 19. Beijing is now producing 22 shields a turn and there's another mountain that we can mine for more. Galley docks in Canton, upgrades to caravel.

870: Vikings give us an even trade for territory maps. We plant some trees outside our palace. Tientsin builds rider, starts another.

880: Anyang expands. Chinan builds caravel, starts court.

890: Pi-Ramses builds Copernicus. Beijing switches to coliseum. Nanking builds caravel, starts cathedral. Minim science, get PP next turn.

900: Game crashed during this turn. Get PP, start chem. Beijing builds coliseum, starts rider. An Egyptian galley sails around north Babylon. Trade PP + 40 to Japan for Music. Trade gems + spice + 25 to Viks for incense. Trade spice to Babs for dyes.

910: Iroquois have retaken Centralia, but lost Akwesasne. Egypt lands MI and longbow outside Chinan. Time to see what my riders can do. Rider kills MI, we get golden age! I can turn science to 50%, lux to 10%, and make 29/turn, getting chem in 10. Another rider kills the longbow.

920: Kaifeng builds pike, starts court. Upgrade spears in Ningpo to pikes.

930: Beijing builds rider, starts Bach. Shanghai builds lib, starts aqua. We can get Bach in 17. Peace treaty w/Babs expires next turn. luxury trade might keep them in line, though.

940: Egyptian galley tries to take on our caravel, sinks. We add a wing to our palace.

950: Babs renew the peace treaty. Chengdu builds lib, starts rider. Kaifeng expands. Hangchow riots, shift worker to taxman. I have almost run out of things for my workers to do.

960: Japan allies with Egypt vs. Iroquois. Get chem, start metal, get in 8. Hangchow builts market, starts lib. Babs and Aztecs start Shakespeare, so they must have Demo. We try to buy banking but no takers, and they refuse gpt deals. I can't figure out how our rep got trashed.

970: Tatung builds lib, starts market. Macao builds market, starts lib. Trade Japan chem for nav + 11 + WM. Start preparing the ships to load troops.

980: Tientsin builds rider, starts market. Tsingtao switches from rider to caravel.

990: Ningpo builds market, starts uni. Tsingtao builds caravel, starts uni.

1000: Tatung expands.

1010: Canton builds rider. Nanking builds cath, starts grain. Paoting and Sippar build temple, start harbor. Sword upgraded to MI. Canton builds rider, starts Magellan. My workers are running out of stuff to do, so I start joining them to cities.

1020: We renew the alliance with Iroqs, but without paying 16/turn. Shanghai builds aquaduct, starts rider. Hangchow builds lib, starts uni. Iroqs want way too much for wine.

1030: We lose horses. Get metal, start physics. Trade metal to Iroqs for bank. Trade metal to Japan for econ. Open an embassy to Viks, shoulda done that long ago. They have berserks. We send out 3 ships of MI + riders and declare war on Japan.

1040: Chinan expands. Troops land on mountain outside Izumo.

1050: Japan makes peace w/Iroquois. Japs send a samurai against my horde, doesn't even scratch 'em. That's why I put them on the mountain, hehe. A galley attacks our caravel and is sunk. Nanking starts bank. Xinjian finishes FP, starts lib. Memphis gets Magellan, Elephantine builds Bach. Tlateloloco builds Shakespeare. Everyone's going for Adam Smith now. We spy on Kyoto, Aztecs will get it in 3. Crap, they will beat us by 2 turns. Rider kills pike, takes Izumo. No resistors! Izumo starts harbor. The Iroquois are getting beat up bad. Send rest of troops toward Satsuma. There is at least 1 samurai there. Egypt willing to give us a straight-up peace. We are still allies with Iroquois, so not yet. The FP does wonders for our southern cities. Canton switches to bank. We lose a ton of shields switching Beijing to bank, but it must be done.

1060: Their samurai doesn't attack. Lagash builds Newton U. Rider takes on samurai, loses, redlines samurai. I saw a musket in there, too. Everyone has Physics already, and won't trade Demo. Rider redlines a musket. Rider makes clean kill vs. pike. Riders finish off samurai, but redlined musket remains. Reinforcements land near Izumo. We buy horses from Aztecs for gems, spices + 185. Soon we'll have our own, though.

1070: 2 warriors (they still have 'em?) attack my redlined rider on mountain, both lose. Samurai retakes Izumo. Anyang builds court, starts market. Reinforcements take Izumo back. Rider lost, but MI goes leet. We need more to take Satsuma. Have to turn up lux, as losing those riders is starting to hurt. Rush harbor in Paoting. Beijing switched to rider.

1080: Canton builds rider. Macao builds lib, starts aqua. Paoting starts pike. Kyoto builds Adam Smith. Rush harbor in Izumo. 2 MI lose to musket. We need some artillery.

1090: Izumo builds harbor, starts lib.

1100: Japan wants to talk peace. We try some pointy-stick research, but Japan won't give in. Hammi calls up to demand gems. We give him some. Xinjian builds lib, starts uni. Chinan builds court, starts barracks.

1110: Egyptian knights roll across the border. Our units on mountain outside Satsuma hold. Learn magnets, start ToG. The major powers are industrial. Tientsin starts bank. Sippar builds harbor, starts court.

1120: Leet rider gets killed, but vet rider gets promotion. Tsingtao builds uni, starts aqua. Golden Age ends. MI pillage Japanese iron. Sword kills longbow. Caravel upgrades to galleon. Beijing is churning out cats.

1130: Nanking builds bank, starts uni. Chinan starts lib. We make peace with Japan, buying ToG for 130. We go for national for the rifles. We make peace with Egypt. Unfortunately we take a rep hit, but we seem to have already taken one earlier. Iroquois are down to their last city.

I'm pretty sure that there were at least 2 other people who posted about 20K games in the first thread, so it may not be quite that bad. Of course, I wouldn't mind getting both awards, as they would balance out last month's red ambulance nicely, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think I'll stick with 20K for a while, as I seem to be improving, they are fun, and it's sort of fun to be in the top five. I don't have to tell anybody I'm also in the bottom five. :)
