Sometimes it's hard to find "that gotm that started in a swamp...", for example. To help with questions like that, we have created this index of all the Civ2 GOTMs played here at CFC, so far. If you search this thread for "swamp", for example, you should find GOTM #45. The idea arose in this thread by Marlos.

The plan is to list the gotms in chronological order, in the first 10 posts of this thread, one post for each year from 2001 to 2010. Each entry includes a link to the main thread for that GOTM, and a summary of its starting info, with any notes about special maps in blue. Also, notes about the players or results are in red, and topics discussed in the spoiler are in green. If needed, you can find more about the GOTM in the GOTM Archives, in the game thread or in the spoiler thread.

Everyone is welcome to suggest ideas to improve the index and I will try to oblige. Magic Gorter has moderator privileges, so he can help out with this.

GOTMS from 2001: Moderator = Thunderfall.

This post is reserved for special lists we might imagine later.

but people can now add posts to this thread with suggestions, contributions, questions, etc.

I'm wondering if we need links here for each gotm. They can be found in the GOTM Archives, but they are not so easy to cut-paste.

Allright, this is GotM 1-30. I particularly liked #19 from the looks of it. The description of #30 is quite long, but so is the opening post for that one. Peaster, maybe you can copy the data into your post and adjust the links? I can't edit your posts. ;)

Just to clarify, I copied the information available in the opening posts. If no civilization number is mentioned, I interpreted that as the intention of the creators (although the early days were kind of chaotic). Furthermore I have only mentioned 'special conditions', meaning I did not copy the two times it was mentioned that there is only one settler or that civilization restart is on.

Finally, as for links, I think it would be handy if the 'index' end up as a GotM page... maybe adapting the archive? That way the links to starting and submitted save games is already in.

Spoiler GotM 1-30 :

GotM #1[/ url] - February 2001 - Emperor - Normal Map - 6 Civilizations - Raging horde barbarians - You start with two settlers and four techs

[url=http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=5025]GotM #2[/ url] - March 2001 - King - Large Map - 7 Civilizations - Raging Hordes - Accelerated Startup in 1850 BC with the Mongolians. You are already a Monarchy and your empire is the most powerful empire in the world at this time. You have recently discovered the English and have signed a peace treaty with them (after they shared their currency knowledge with you). Two of their cities are within sight, including a newly founded city, Nottingham. One of your horseman unit is near Nottingham. Shall you betray the English and use your horsemen to destroy that city, or shall you keep the peace treaty? Another option is to move your horsemen back to your undefended city of Tabritz, build a trireme, and find new lands; you can not afford to stay on this island forever. Your wisemen had discovered Map Making not long ago.

The first turns were played by a human player. Several turns are skipped to start with, and then the playing starts. A nearby hut provides a horseman who goes exploring North. The settler also explores South. A hut gives 50 gold. Another gives a Archer. Washington is founded. Another hut gives 50 gold. Washington IPRB a settler over a few turns. New York is founded in a spot that will have 4 specials (2 are hidden) and a couple rivers. Hanging Gardens is started. Barbarians land NE of New York. Our Archer and Horseman go out to meet them. Our Horseman kills one of the Barbarians, while our Archer fortifies on a forest square. The Barbarians attack and lose; our horseman chances down the Barbarian leader and ransoms him off. Both of our units were made Veterans in the process. In the mean time, Boston is founded near Washington. More Settlers are built and roads are made to connect our cities. A Settler begins to mine a grassland to undercover a hidden special. This is where you come in.

You have three cities and two settlers. Furthermore you start with pottery and are well into having a Wonder built, almost discovering Monarchy, and have 230 gold. No other civilizations have started any wonders and, at the current rate, you should be able to switch to Monarchy the turn after it is discovered. It is also worth pointing out that our nice little island crosses the median line.

Allright, this is GotM 1-30. I particularly liked #19 from the looks of it. The description of #30 is quite long, but so is the opening post for that one. Peaster, maybe you can copy the data into your post and adjust the links? I can't edit your posts. ;)
Thanks!! I have cut-pasted your entries and edited them a little. Let me know if you want anything changed. I also thought #30 was too long, so I removed some of the description. Also, some of my blue highlights were pretty arbitrary [see 14, for example]. I guess anyone interested can suggest better descriptions.

Also, they can suggest additional comments related to who played, who won, etc

Finally, as for links, I think it would be handy if the 'index' end up as a GotM page... maybe adapting the archive? That way the links to starting and submitted save games is already in.
Sorry ... I don't completely understand. So far, my entries [40 to 50] don't have working links - not sure yet if anyone cares about that.

Sorry, my wording may have been a bit off. I meant to say that it would be great if, eventually, we can integrate the index into the Archive (click). There most savegames are operational, the results are posted, and one can download the submissions already. It would make sense to somehow connect the index to that. So if not integrating, links would at least be nice.

Now that we are gathering information, we have all the freedom to present it in a different way or reshuffling the sequence. Aslo, in those with very long descriptions, like GotM#30, it might be good to refer those using the index to the original thread for more pre-game information.

Magic can edit the Archives, if he wants. I really can't see how to improve them, though.

I imagine index-users who want more info about a GOTM will go to the original thread or to the Archives [but I can also explicitly suggest that in the intro]. I think the index entries should be minimal. Only the special memorable features of the gotm are needed. Maybe we should delete the info about barb activity, for example, but since it's already there I'll probably leave it.

I think you are suggesting that every index entry should have a link to the game thread. Dunno if it's needed, but if Magic does that for #60-90, I'll also do it for #40-50 for the sake of uniformity.

Next, I hope people will mention other memorable gotm features [unusual strategies used, surprise winners, enlightening spoilers, etc], and we can include that info as it trickles in.

I had the plan to make the links for all the gotm's. That way somebody always can find the thread of that GOTM. I had contact with Thunderfall. He's trying to move the save games from the old server so they will available again.

I don't think I want to change the archive list. It's not that easy to change because it's written with a lot of codes and that gives me a lot of work to change it.

This is going to be really helpful, well done for all your effort.

The dates are slightly wrong on the older ones. There was a 1-2 month gap after Duke posted the last one and before Magic took over. Have a look at the first post from GOTM 91,92 & 93. GOTM 82 & 82 were the end of 2007.

I realised it yesterday myself that between the last GOTM of Duke and the first of mine was a few months difference. I will correct it on monday when adding the next ten GOTM's.

Good. I've pretty much finished editing #1 thru #59, including links. We can eventually include various post-game remarks - whatever people find interesting about a gotm.

I've started that for #41 to #50, comments welcome. Strategy rks are in green.. I am mostly an EC player, so my comments are naturally biased towards that. I hope landers and others will add more rks and balance this out.

Added Feb 13: I've added misc comments for GOTMs 40-80, in hopes others will find them interesting, or helpful in finding some half-forgotten gotm. Any objections ??
