I'm not a fan of galley chains and not good at planning them.
After entering MA in 50BC I researched to Chivalry on max and then stopped.
Meanwhile Egypt was the last to fall on my continent, and I was amassing Galleys and moving troops from Egypt and from the core cities to those Galleys: MIs , swords and some knights.

After having 10 Galleys with 5 filled I moved over and attacked America at about 150AD. The GL I got in 70BC was on one of those Galleys. I built FP in Washington soon after landing.
Didn't get much use of the FP as the troops I moved over were enough to conquer France and then attack China, and I had enough money to build temples in the new lands.
Got another GL in about 400AD, built Hanging Gardens in Paris with it, just to speed up culture expansion.
Domination was reached in 600AD after destroying America and France and getting couple of cities from China.

Più Freddo, it was fun to play like this.
I could try different things Instead of same old Settler factory.
I had barracks built in the Capital and was building Jags/Settlers, and later Swords/Settlers. I would make peace often and negotiate for cities with my rivals, as lots of their cities stayed at 1pop. When Republic was researched and I could use Irrigation, I already had many cities built and taken from rivals, so making a Settler factory was no longer important. Plus I built Pyramids by 10AD, so it was just irrigating and making Settlers/Workers whenever I could. Plus I captured many Workers.

P.S. One more thing. Lack of Food bonuses hurt AI more than it hurt me. They were slow to develop and easier targets.

To get out of Despotism ASAP I used despotic GA via war with Japan.
Irrigated Grasslands at Monarchy. Got Pyramids via first GL.
Research Navigation on full speed and carry out war with Horses mainly.

I started late and ended up retiring. I had forgotten how specialists don't do all that much in PTW and that Philosophy doesn't give you a free tech. I moved the settler south along the river. I attacked Egypt and then Japan. Then when attacking Japan with swords I got sneak attacked by German and had to recapture a city. I also had to gift cities away a few times so I wouldn't lose them, and then ended up auto-razing them, even though I tried to wait until it grew to size 2 on one city... but then the population immediately dropped to size 1 on the next turn and I decided to attack anyways. I made out of the ancient age.

OK, but on Continents, the weakness of home AI:s hurt not only them, but you.

All: How did your continent develop compared to the endowed one?

When I reached the other continent we both had something to trade, and then I went ahead (with Germany free tech) and stayed ahead. The other guys didn't use their Food advantage anyway: when I crossed over they were few and easy to beat. America mined its Wheats on plains and France was mostly in the jungle.

The AI immediately pop-rushes a Spearman in an endangered town, when reaching size 2. In order to prevent that, you need to gift/sell them Republic or Monarchy the turn before you attack. Makes warfare much easier (less Spearmen to deal with...) and much more worthwhile (less auto-razed towns...)
